This case play seems to be a hot topic between umpires. PLAY: R3 is on third base and R1 on first base with one out.B4 hits a ground ball to F4 (2ND base person , who is playing up but is behind the pitcher. The ball goes between F4'S legs and hits R1, who is running to second behind F4, as F9 (right fielder)approaches the infield. What is the correct ruling?

The answer would depend on if f9 was determined to have a possible play on any runner or not. If no play available it is a live ball and play continues. If a play is judged to have been available to F9 then it would be a dead ball, runner is out, runner on 3rd is returned to 3rd and batter is awarded 1st.

Some persons believe it only has to be past infielders who have a chance to make a play. Rule book states past all fielders who have a chance to make a play on a runner. RFK is correct. With outfielders playing close, especially the right fielder who now have a reasonable play at first. It is totally up to the umpires judgement.. Great job to RFK.
