| Def. of Foul Tip a batted ball that goes sharply and directly from the bat to the catcher's hand(s) or glove/mill and is legally caught by the catcher. So question is: is it foul tip A) foul goes directly to catchers glove, and pops out in the air about 4 feet and is caught by catcher B) foul goes directly to catchers glove, and pops out in the air about 4 feet and then the catcher traps the ball against her body to make the catch.

| A-Yes B-A ball is never caught until it is held securely in the glove or hand. This may or may not eventually be a catch, depends on if the catcher secures the ball in hand or glove or ball falls to ground without being secured.

| B becomes a foul tip when the ball is securely held in the hand or glove. Both A & B meet all the criteria of a foul tip, a ball that goes sharply and directly from the bat to the catchers glove or hand and is caught. If the ball goes directly from bat and touches glove or hand, the ball may touch the catcher, rebound and be caught and still be a foul tip.
ASA 2007 case play 1-59, ball goes directly from bat and nicks catchers glove, rebounds off catchers chest and is secured for the catch. It is a foul tip.

| a and b - foul balls. If ball is not caught after ball is directed into hand or glove and caught it is a foul ball. Would we let a runner steal on any of these two balls that went up into the air after touching the catchers glove or hands. Can steal on foul tip caught!

| I have posted the applicable ASA case play. In both instances the ball traveled directly and sharply from the bat to the hand or glove and meets all the criteria of a foul tip. So yes, you would allow a runner to steal in both situations.

| Hank, I have posted the applicable ASA case play. If the ball first goes directly and sharply to the hand or glove, it may then rebound off the catcher or into the air and still be caught for a foul tip.

| Hank I posted the definition of foul tip above, I actually had B happen to me in a game. That is what got me thinking about this. Both plays meet the definition of foul tip so it is a foul tip
