Astros clinch AL as Hartlaub throws 4 no-hit innings
In this battle for the AL, the Astros made a statement in the first, scoring 4 runs. Shane Jacoby led off the game with an infield single and came around to score on Justin Price's single--his 100th YCOBL hit. Steve Hanson (single), Oscar Blanco (ground out) and Mike Ormond (single) plated the other 3 runs in consecutive at-bats. In the 3rd inning, the Astros extended the lead. Jeff Schwenk drew a 2-out walk--his 2nd of the game--and Justin Price followed with a single to center, moving up to 2nd on the throw to 3rd. Tommy Hartlaub hit a clutch 2-out single to right to give the Astros a 6-0 lead. Meanwhile, on the mound, Hartlaub kept the hot-hitting Rays cold all morning, only allowing 2 walks in 4 no-hit innings. The Rays finally got on the board in the 5th when Ron Lehman drew a bases-loaded walk with 2 outs. An error on the next play scored 2 more to cut the lead in half at 6-3. In the 6th, the Astros added some insurance on a 2-run single by Hanson. The Rays tried to rally with 2 outs in the 7th with an RBI double by Adrian Ferrer and an RBI single by Gary Blaylock, but they would get no closer. With the win, the Astros locked up a spot in the championship game.
Justin Price led all batters with 3 hits and 3 runs. Tommy Hartlaub and Steve Hanson each had 2 hits and knocked in 5 of the 8 runs for the Astros. Eric Yoho was perfect for the Rays, reaching on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch.
