Rays keep A's at arm's length and never trail in 10-6 win

The Rays started out quickly with Scott Hoover and Tyler Hensley hitting singles to bring up the top of the order. Eric Yoho knocked in the Rays' first run with a fielder's choice and Ron Lehman added 2 more runs with a 2-out, bases-loaded single to left. The A's would get 2 runs back in the 2nd. After loading the bases on an error, single and walk, Tim Steinhauer plated the first run with a fielder's choice. Dean Wolf followed with a single to right, but was thrown out trying to go to 2nd after a bobble in right field to end the inning. In the 4th, Lehman led off with a single and moved to third on Phil Polakoff's double. Both would score to make it 5-2 when Neil Werner had an RBI fielder's choice and Bryan Stubbs followed with an RBI single. The A's got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. After James Frank and Steve Mercado singled to put runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs, Andy Wertz singled to right to knock in one run, but the inning would end on the bases again on a perfect 9-6-5 relay to gun down the runner heading to third. Each time the A's got close, the Rays would extend the lead. In the 5th, Gary Blaylock smacked a 2-out, 2-run double to give the Rays a 4-run lead. The A's would get both runs back in the bottom of the inning. After Ron Biser led off by being hit by a pitch, Steinhauer and Wolf both crushed RBI doubles to the fence in left center. Matt Smith followed with a single to put runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Polakoff was able to wiggle out of the jam, striking out the next batter and then inducing 2 infield popups. The top of the Rays order started the 7th by loading the bases on 2 singles and an error. After an infield fly, Lehman and Polakoff laced RBI singles and Werner had his 2nd RBI groundout to give the Rays their biggest lead of the game at 10-5. As usual, the A's would strike right back when Wolf knocked in a run with an RBI single. However, any chance at a rally would be snuffed when, for the 3rd time, an A's inning ended on the basepaths. This time, the runner going from 1st to 2nd would be hit by a batted ball for the final out of the game.

Ron Lehman (run, 3 RBIs, walk) and Phil Polakoff (run, RBI) led the Rays offense with 3 hits each. Scott Trager, Eric Yoho and Gary Blaylock each added 2 hits in the win. Dean Wolf led the A's with 3 hits and 3 RBIs, while Andy Wertz was 2-for-2 with a run, RBI and walk.
