Four A's hurlers combine to 3-hit the Orioles
The A's opened the scoring in the 2nd inning with 2 runs. After loading the bases with 2 walks and a single with 1 out, Ron Biser hit a grounder to shortstop. The Orioles attempted to turn the double play to get out of the inning, but an errant throw by the 2nd basemen after getting the force at 2nd kept the inning alive, allowing 2 runs to score with one RBI for Biser. Then they opened up a can of whoop-ass in the 4th, scoring 6 and batting around. Dave Miller and James Frank started the inning with singles when Steve Mercado drove in the first run with a double. Andy Wertz knocked in the 2nd run with a ground out in between hit batters, then Tim Steinhauer cleared the bases with a 3-run double. Dean Wolf followed with an RBI single to close out the scoring and leave the A's with an 8-0 lead. The Orioles finally got to Mercado in the 4th, turning a pitcher's worst enemy--a leadoff walk--into their first run with consecutive 2-out singles from Corey Miller and Todd Racey. However, that would be the last hit they would get. Despite being wild with 6 walks in 3 innings, Matt Smith, Tim Steinhauer and Dean Wolf would each pitch a scoreless inning to close out the victory. The A's added 2 last runs in the 7th on an RBI groundout by Jim McMahon and a sac fly by Andy Wertz. Dave Miller's lead off double was the catalyst for the inning.
For the A's, Miller, Mercado, Wolf and Wayne Schuster each had 2 hits. For the O's, Mark Bradnick had a keen eye at the plate, walking 3 times.
