Guardians score in pairs to top Rays; Sunbury HR sets tone
Derek Sunbury began the game with a blast, hitting a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left for a solo homer. Back-to-back 2-out hits with the bases empty by Ian Hartman (double) and Gary Perkins (RBI single) made it 2-0. The Rays wasted little time coming back. After the first 2 batters reached base, Adrian Ferrer hit an RBI single to right center. Then, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Ron Lehman gave the Rays the lead with a 2-run double to left center--it was also his 100th YCOBL hit. In the 3rd inning, the Guardians tied the game when the Rays defense fell asleep. Scott Meckley hit a single to center field that moved Sunbury from 1st to 3rd, but Sunbury noticed the Rays defense relaxed too soon and scurried home from 3rd. A late throw home allowed Meckley to move up to 2nd, which would prove important when he scored on a 2-out single by Hartman to give the Guardians the lead at 4-3. Neither team would score in the next 2 innings until the Guardians scored their 3rd pair of runs in the 6th. Zach Nahass and Hartman reached on 1-out singles, moved up on a ground out to first and scored on a 2-out, 2-run single by Earl Kirk. The Rays got one back when Scott Trager scored from first on a double to the fence in right by Ferrer. The inning ended when another potential run was gunned down at the plate by Sunbury in center field. Finally, in the 7th, the Guardians added a pair of insurance runs on 2-run single by Nahass for the 8-4 final score.
Ian Hartman led the Guardians with 3 hits, while Derek Sunbury, Scott Meckley, Zach Nahass and Jack Spector chipped in 2 hits a piece. Adrian Ferrer was 3 for 3 to lead the Rays.
