Astros take advantage of A's miscues for 5-3 win
The A's opened quickly, scoring twice with 2 outs in the first on consecutive singles by Matt Smith, Wayne Schuster, and Chris Schildt. The Astros got one back in the bottom of the inning on a 2-out error when the A's were trying to complete an inning-ending double play but the throw to first sailed, allowing the runner from 3rd to score. Then they tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd on another 2-out error with runners on 2nd and 3rd (Ron Barbour single, Sean Englert double). After the 3rd and 4th were scoreless, the A's pulled back ahead, again with 2 outs, when Andy Wertz singled, Ron Biser was hit by a pitch, and Tim Steinhauer hit an RBI single. Once again, the Astros would strike right back. After Justin Price led off the inning with a single, an error and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Oscar Blanco came up big with a 2-run single to give the Astros the lead, and Mike Ormond followed with a sac fly for a little breathing room. Now with the lead, Price pitched 2 hitless innings with 3 Ks to pick up the win and keep the Astros undefeated.
Ron Barbour of the Astros and Chris Schildt of the A's were the only 2 players with 2 hits in this low-scoring game.
