Rays walk-off Royals in game dominated by pitching

The starting pitchers for both teams put on a clinic. Tim Gerber only allowed 2 hits and 2 walks in 4 shutout innings for the Rays. He got out of his only jam in the 3rd inning by striking out back-to-back hitters with 1 out after an error put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Chad Higley matched Gerber 0 for 0, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks in 4 shutout innings and inducing 2 double plays. The second pitchers, Roga Rangel and Doug Arnold, were almost as good, allowing only 7 hits between them, with each run in the game scoring on an unusual play. The Rays scored first in the 6th. After a 1-out walk to Adrian Ferrer, Eric Yoho hit a double to right field, but the right fielder stepped on the ball and then had trouble picking it up, allowing Ferrer to score all the way from first. Then, in the 7th, the Royals were down to their last out with no one on base when Robbie Hughes hit a slow roller to 2nd base that he just barely beat out for a single. The next batter hit a one hopper to shortstop that the shortstop whiffed on. Hughes rounded 2nd base a little too far, but the throw back to 2nd to try to nab him hit him on the arm and rolled into short right field to allow him to move up to 3rd. Then the throw back into the infield went to no one allowing Hughes to score and tie the game without the ball ever being hit out of the infield. Arnold had a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 7th to send the game into extra innings. Rangel had his own 1-2-3 inning in the 8th with 3 ground outs to give the Rays another shot at a walk-off. Neil Werner led off the 8th with a double down the right field line. After a strikeout, Roga Rangel hit a single to left field. Despite the entire bench trying to stop the runner at 3rd, Steve Crone sent him home as the throw in from the outfield went through 2 cutoff men and it became a foot race between the runner and the bouncing ball. The runner won and the Rays walked it off for the win in this battle of 4-1 teams.

Tim Gerber of the Rays and Robbie Hughes of the Royals were the only players with 2 hits in this pitchers' duel.
