Phillies continue mastery of low-scoring games with 4-2 win
The Royals' first batter of the game, Jon DeYoung, reached on a single and scored on a Chad Higley 2-out single to put the Royals ahead 1-0. However, that would be the only run Brian Crimmel would allow in his 4 innings. The Phillies took the lead right back in the 2nd, loading the bases with 1 out on singles by Rick Thompson, Cory Matthews and Jim Lyter, followed by a 2-run single by Michael Lamont. Leading off the 5th, Shawn Kilburn greeted Rick Thompson with a single and he would come around to score on an RBI walk to Chad Wolf to tie the game at 2. Just like his mound mate, Thompson would allow no more run in the game. The Phillies made that pay off in the 6th when Bernie Michaels led off the inning with a walk and scored on a 2-out single by Andrew Campbell. The Phillies turned a lead-off HBP to Jim Lyter into an insurance run on a Dave Snell RBI single. Higley kept the game close by working out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam by striking out 2 and catching an infield popup, but the Royals were unable to score in the bottom of the 7th.
Brian Crimmel paced the Phillies with 3 hits. Michael Lamont and Avie Stone each had 2 hits in the win. Jon DeYoung and Chad Higley had a pair of hits for the Royals.
