Rays slip by Rockies for 7th win
The Rays started off quickly with Adrian Ferrer hitting a hustle double and Tim Gerber and Phil Polakoff adding RBI singles in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead. They would cling to that lead through the entire game. The Rays added another run in the 3rd when Scott Trager doubled and then scored on Eric Yoho's sac fly. The Rockies broke through in the 3rd, turning a leadoff walk to John Chronister and a 1-out single by Rick Goebeler into 2 runs on RBI singles by Bob Eichelberger and Rob Streib. After a scoreless 4th inning, the Rays opened up their biggest lead of the game with 4 runs in the 5th. Yoho doubled in the first 2 runs, then Gary Blaylock followed with an RBI single, and Tim Gerber capped the scoring with an RBI ground out. The Rockies got those runs back in the next 2 innings. Goebeler and Eichelberger led off the 5th with singles and scored on a ground out and an error. Then Goebeler cut the lead down to one with a 2-run single in the 6th. The Rays added a run in the top of the 7th when Scott Hoover led off the inning with a single, moved up to 3rd on 2 ground outs, and scored on Ferrer's 2nd double of the game. That run would prove important. Tracy Fuller led of the 7th with a double to the fence in center--the 7th time in 7 innings the Rockies got their first batter on base. Singles by Bryan Hemcher and Chris Bubb made it 8-7 and put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with 1 out. Phil Polakoff then buckled down and got a strikeout and a popup to shortstop to preserve the win for the Rays.
Adrian Ferrer led the Rays with 4 hits including 2 doubles, while Scott Trager added 2 hits and 2 runs and Eric Yoho had 3 RBIs in the victory. Rick Goebeler paced the Rockies with 4 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBIs. Bob Eichelberger, Bryan Hemcher, and Bob Williams also contributed a pair of singles. John Chronister reached in all 3 plate appearances, scoring twice, with a single and 2 walks.
