A's break open 1-1 tie with 6 in 6th to beat Giants
Andy Wertz led off the game with a single and scored to put the A's ahead quickly, 1-0. It could have been more because the last 2 outs of the inning were recorded on line drives to center field that turned into 8-6 fielder's choices because they were hit so hard right at the center fielder that the runner from first couldn't get to second. The Giants tied the game in the 5th. After loading the bases on 2 walks and an error, Dave Warfel smacked a 2-out single to make it 1 all. The score remained tied until the top of the 6th. Wertz once again led off the inning with a single. Ron Biser followed with a double, his 200th YCOBL hit, to put the A's in a prime position to go ahead. Tim Steinhauer then doubled in both runners to make it 3-1. After a walk and a flyout, Wayne Schuster and Gary Andrews singled, with the latter making it 4-1. The Giants got a 5-2 putout for the 2nd out of the inning, but Dave Miller put the exclamation point on the inning with a bases-clearing double to the fence in left field for a 7-1 lead. The Giants tried to come back in the 6th with a pair of singles, but Andy Wertz had a web gem in center, making a sliding catch to snuff the rally.
Andy Wertz (3 hits and 2 runs) and Dave Miller (3 hits and 3 RBIs) spearheaded the A's offense with Tim Steinhauer, Gary Andrews, and Steve Mercado adding 2 hits each. For the Giants, Adam Pattisall and Dave Warfel each had 2 hits, accounting for 4 of the 5 Giants' hits. On the mound, Chris Schildt (4 innings, 1 unearned run, 2 hits) and Steve Mercado (3 innings, 3 hits) kept the Giants off balance, with Mercado picking up the win. John Jamison pitched well for the Giants, only allowing an unearned run and 6 hits with 4 Ks in 4 innings.
