Muhlenberg Over Southern Area

At Gochnauer Field, the Muhlenberg A's began their 11 games in 9 days with a non-league win over the defending Schuylkill/Berks Champs Southern Area 4-3 in a rematch of the 2011 League Championship game at First Energy Stadium. The A's (16-4, 8-1) started fast in the first putting three runs up highlighed by Chris Drobnick's two-run double giving Muhlenberg a 2-0 lead. John Henninger added a sacrifice fly to put the laed a 3-0. Southern Area (10-1, 7-0) struck back in the top of the second with two of their own and tied it in the top half of the sixth with a single run to make it 3-3.
In the bottom half of the 7th, Daulton Fidler walked, took 2nd on a sacrifice by Andrew Faust. After Tyler Sassaman reached on an error, Mike Calvaresi safety squeezed Fidler home from third with the game winner.
"This was actually an important game for us, said coach Phil Raccuglia. "We needed to find out if we can play with one of the best teams in our league."
Jordan Jeter threw 5-plus innings giving up only two earned runs while striking out seven. Elijah Keller picked up the win in relief with 1 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball. "This was a real good ball game and we have a ton of respect for that team," said pitcher Jordan Jeter. "It's a win that we were fortunate to get but more importantly, it's a win that raises our confidence level."
Muhlenberg was held to four hits by two Southern Area pitchers.
Next up for the A's, a showdown with division rival, Kutztown, Tuesday night at Gochnauer Field. First pitch is at 6:30.
