A Good Start
The new-look York Diamonds got off to a fast start to the 2006 campaign with a 19-1 victory over the expansion Mississauga Jays.
Mike Rochon got start and pitched well. Chetan Gandhi pitched 2 hitless innings for the win and Eric Foley finished up for the save.
Offensively, Dan Fiorita had three hits and 5 RBI's and Eric Foley contributed a bases loaded double and 5 RBI's in total. Steve Foley also had 3 RBI's.
York's newcomers had a fine day at the plate as well, going 6-15 with 11 runs scored and 3 RBI's. Evan Depiero had 3 hits, Andre Contreras had 2 and Nick Guglielmo had 1. Mark Lombard and Manny Rodriguez scored 5 runs between them. Brent Sterling had 3 walks as well.
Team accountant Paul Freeman had these comments as he watched video of the stirring Buffalo Sabres comeback win, "It was a nice way to start the season. Everybody got to play and the newcomers seemed comfortable and fit right in. We got great pitching and patient and timely hitting tonight. As for the Sabres, it wasn't quite the 'MAYDAY' goal of the early 90's but it was pretty damned good nonetheless!"
Next game is Thursday night vs the Mississauga A's at Keelesdale. Batting practice begins at 6:15.
