Bearcats wear down Ravens 22-6
Pre-season game number 2 in the books for Vermont. Bearcats win 22-6. This was a cross-over game between two NEFL teams. The Bearcats play a 10-game double A conference schedule with a 45-man roster limit while the Ravens play an 8-game single A schedule with a 35-man roster limit.

The first half was a combination of good defense and struggling offenses who were doing their best to find their rhythm and move the ball with any consistency.

It was a hot day with temperatures in the 90’s when the game kicked off, and each team’s offense looked sluggish.

#20 Roy Rose left his defensive end and fullback position to take over the controls of the Ravens offense playing QB as a qualified back-up to injured first year QB #6 Abdi Abdo. Rose, who for years did the same for former quarterback now part time player #14 Clayton Torres didn’t take too long to make some positive contributions.

Early in the second quarter he teamed up with WR/LB #18 Terrance (Tedo) Whitney for a 67-yard completion down to the Bearcats 13-yard line.

The Raven defense stepped up with veteran defensive tackle Brett Walton, who is back playing for the Ravens again, led the way with making several key stops and either made the sack or assisted on 6 sacks on the day.

The score was even until 7:50 third quarter when the Bearcats powered their way into the end zone scoring the game’s first points. The conversion attempt was no good. The 3rd quarter ended 6-0 Bearcats.

Brunswick scored again to pad their lead early in the 4th quarter at the 14:30 mark when a Bearcat receiver got open down the right sideline and outran the defense scoring from 45 yards out. Brunswick next scored the two-point conversion on a pass play to just inside the pilon to make the score 14-0 Bearcats.

The Ravens scored their lone points with 11:52 left in the 4th when QB #20 Roy Rose found #14 Clayton Torres over the middle and after shedding a would-be tackler Torres raced to the end zone completing the 69-touchdown play. The two-point conversion rushing attempt by Rose was no good and the score was 14-6 Bearcats.

The Bearcats scored once more this time on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out with 7:50 remaining in the fourth quarter and pounded in the two-point conversion with a fullback dive to make the score 22-6 Bearcats, and that was the final score.

QB #20 Roy Rose had over 200 yards throwing with the 1 TD to Torres. He also ran the ball for over 30 yards and played defense during the 4th quarter contributing a sack.

WR #14 Clayton Torres had the 69-yard touchdown reception.

WR/LB #18 Terrance (Tedo) Whitney had the 67-yard reception and 1 sack.

DL/OL #10 Brett Walton was in on 6 sacks.

LB/FB #24 DeEric (Bud) O’Neil - 1 touchdown saving tackle.

DL/OL rookie Matthew Marrier - 2 sacks

LB/DB/RB rookie #5 Ryan Waybridge - 8 tackles.

DB/WR #1 Matthew Gomes - 1 INT.

The Bearcats and Ravens now wait 3 weeks as their first regular season games are on the week-end of July 20-21st.

Vermont plays at home at South Burlington HS, Sunday July 21. Kick-off is 1:00pm against the New Haven Venom from CT.
