Boys light up scoreboard in win over Springfield

September 16, 2008
Wissahickon Varsity boys hosted our neighbors to the south, a first-year Springfield Spartans team coached by 3 Wissahickon alumni. The Spartans have a strong swim program, and what they lack in polo experience, they made up in speed and enthusiasm. Wissahickon’s first and second lines got about equal playing time in this tune-up before North Penn. Offense scorers included Matt Fellin (2 goals, 1 assist), Carl Krause (1G 2A) Mike Koziol (1G 1A), plus Bryan Cakouros, Brian Wi, Tim Greer and Chris Pollock with a goal each. On defense, Jason Baiocchi turned away 18 shots. He was supported by Brian Wi (3 kickouts drawn) Sean High and Chris Pollock with multiple steals. Solid game guys, and good luck to Springfield in your first season.
Without a doubt the JV boys sparkled in the water and gave their all both offensively and defensively for a 10-6 win over Springfield.  A few of the game's highlights include:
Evan Horn, freshman starter, (wearing cap #3) began the momentum by putting Wissahickon on the scoreboard first and then went on to score two more times for a total of 3 goals.  Sophomore (#21) Evan Hutsell lead the offense with 5 goals and 3 assists (also a few steals for the defense).  Great playing was also evident in Sophomore (#12) Brandon Oruch's performance who had 2 goals and 3 assists (there was some great chemistry between #12 and #21).  Sophomore, (#16) Craig Shapiro was also strong with multiple assists and strong defense.  Freshman Adam Smith showed his determination both in defense and offense.  Junior (#3) Ben Byrne was powerful in goal with at least 6 saves.

Wiss JV boys kept the lead throughout the game and stayed strong against an emerging Springfield team.  They look forward to facing North Penn on Thursday and continuing their winning streak!

2008 Spring League - Boys take 1st in Division

May 10, 2008
The Wissahickon Golden Apple Boys played strong defense games in Saturday's semifinal and final Division match-ups to win first place in the Red Division in this year's Spring Championship. In the first game against 4th seeded GP Franklin, the Golden Apples scored quickly as Eric Waechter stole the ball on the open play, swam past his surprised opponent and scored unassisted. This was followed by 2 goals by Matt Fellin before the GP team was able to hit the net. Additional 1st period scores came from Wi-man, Brandon Oruch (assist-Fellin) and Waechter resulting in a 6-4 lead after 18 minutes. The second half was similar with Wissahickon in control. Scores by Nagelberg, Waechter, Cakouros and Krause were matched by 3 goals for the Franklin team. Final score Golden Apples 10 GP Franklin 7.

The Division Championship was another good game with Wissahickon defending its 1st place seed against the Greater Philadelphia team. GP drew first blood but Wiss came back with 2 quick goals by Tim Greer and Krause. This was followed by a solid goal by Doug Greer - who was playing for GP! Cakouros and Waechter scored 2 more goals for the Apples, but GP scored 3 more (including another by Doug Greer) to lead at half time 5-4. The lead would have been at least several more except for the outstanding play by Jason Baiocchi in goal. For the second half, Chris Brouse took over net-minding duties, and turned in an equally outstanding performance. Although GP came out strong and scored the next goal, they were held to only 4 more for the remaining period. The Apples really came alive, showing excellent passing and attack skills. Second period scores by Krause (2), Tim Greer, Waechter, Cakouros(2) and Fellin(2) sealed the Division champs Wissahickon team !2-10 win.

Improved Pennridge can't stop Wissahickon

September 25, 2007
This Pennridge team was much improved over last year's one-sided meeting with the Wissahickon boys. With improved defense and a better passing game they kept the Wiss guys moving. In the end, the game was not in doubt. Lot's of substitutions helped many boys get some extra varsity playing time.

Tim Greer lead the scoring with 3 goals, Matt Fellon and Adam Bossert with 2 goals each, Brian Cakouros, Eric Waechter and Doug Greer tallied one each. Assists by Fellon (2), Nagelberg (2), Bossert, Waechter, Doug Greer and Rodgers completed the balanced offense. Jason Baiocchi was solid in goal. Chris Brouse also got some netminder time. Next up, it's Beast of the East!

Wiss boys comes up short despite outstanding defense

September 28, 2007
Game #2 of Beast of the East featured an outstanding defensive performance by the Wissahickon boys. Tied at the end of the 1st and 3rd periods, the McDowell team could not seem to get out of the grasp of a tenacious Wissahickon press. It seemed every McDowell attack was ended by a Wiss steal - contributors include Fellin (2), Cakouros (3), Waechter (5) and Doug Greer with 8 steals! The offense was lead by Matt Fellin (2 goals) and Eric Waechter with 3 goals, including a 4th period go-ahead shot (D. Greer, assist). Unfortunately a McDowell backhand goal (3:10) and a fast counter goal (2:52) couldn't be matched. A very close game between two good teams.

In Game #3, Wissahickon's goaltending excellence shuts down Malvern Prep. Jason Baiocchi had a game-high 16 saves in this win over a strong Malvern Prep team. Once again, the Wissahickon defense was strong and well-coordinated. Malvern also played good defense, and the game was tied 5-5 at the end of 3 periods. In the 4th period, however, the Wissahickon defense held and the offense scored 3 unanswered goals to seal the win.

Game #4 saw Wilson's pass and drive offense overpower the Wiss Boys. No question Wilson has a good team this year. They came out strong in the 1st period of this game, scoring 5 unanswered goals in the first 3 minutes. Then the Wissahickon boys got their legs and the defense took hold. Wilson only scored 3 more times, but it was enough to secure their place at the top of the "B" pool. The two Wissahickon goals came on a super backhander by Waechter (5:38) and beautiful lob shot by Bossert (5:09, Nagelberg assist) in the 3rd period.

WVW Spartan Invitational Tournament

September 15, 2007
This tournament featured matches against the Wilson and the Wyoming Valley West teams. After the 2 hour early morning bus ride to WVW, the Boys Varsity played the Wilson boys.

Wilson scored the first three goals before a good shot from Waechter (D.Greer, assist) found the back of the cage. Wilson scored again to end the first period 4-1 Wilson. Wilson's scoring continued in the 2nd period when they tallied 5 more goals, showing good passing and defense play. The Wissahickon team got off 3 shots in the period but all were stopped. Good defensive play by both teams continued with Wilson managing one additional goal near the end of the 3rd period. Finally, in the 4th period, the Wiss boys came alive, scoring three goals (3:08 by Fellon, Cakouros assist; 1:35 by T.Greer, Waechter assist; :31 by T.Greer, Nagelberg assist). Final score Wilson 10, Wissahickon 4.

The Wilson JV boys got their game going quickly, and they continued to pour it on in the first and second period. At the half Wilson was ahead 7-0. In the third period, the Wissahickon offense and defense came alive. Brian Wi scored two goals (4:49 by Wi, Krause assist; 2:46 by Wi, unassisted) and Wilson was held to none. The JV boys tallied one more goal (4:59 Krause, Wi assist) and Wilson score twice to end the game. Final score Wilson JV Boys 9, Wissahickon 3.

Boys take all four in Blue & Gold tournament

September 13, 2008
The Boys team met new league opponent LaSalle for the first time this week. Balanced scoring and much more active and assertive defensive play highlighted this Friday evening game #2 at the Blue and Gold tournament. The starting line all made contributions, led by Bryan Cakouros with 3 goals, 3 assists, a steal and 3 kickouts drawn. Way to go Bryan! Other point scorers were Matt Fellin (3 goals), Eric Waechter (2 goals, 1 assist), Tim Greer (2 goals, 3 assists) and Carl Krause ( 1 goal, 1 assist). Jason Baiocchi had the steady defense well-positioned, stopping 9 shots. Overall, a fun game and good performance.

Saturday, Day 2 of the Blue & Gold tournament, pitted the Trojan boys against the Perks - Perk Valley and Upper Perk. In game #3, the first line played a controlled O and D, tallying 7 goals in the first half against PV, and allowing only 3. With the team's confidence high, the second and third lines were called in to support the effort. The offense, led by Matt Fellin (3 goals, 1 assist), was helped out by 8 other point scorers. The defense, guided again by Jason Baiocchi's solid net-minding, held off the PV attacks. Another good win.

In game #4, the Wiss boys dominated play from the start, moving the ball and methodically setting up shot attempts. Oh, and the defense was smothering. Upper Perk had no chance in this one-sided game. The second and third lines played a good portion of the game, gaining some valuable tournament experience. Good job guys, in a tourney 4 for 4!
