Registration Details - Frequently Asked Questions

7 April, 2023
Thank you for all the questions and early registrations! Here are some clarification notes:

Playing Up a Level
Q: Can my child bump up a division?
A: All players must sign up in the proper division based on birth date. After registration numbers are in, some “bumping” may occur to balance divisions. RARELY will a player be bumped up based on skill level. All divisions require quality players to lead and inspire.

Bring a Friend
New for 2023 - You can name and match one friend on your registration. Your friend must also name you on their registration. We will try our best to honor those matched names for team-mates. Please keep in mind that the draft of "friends" is not 100% guaranteed. We will try to balance the teams with numbers, experience, parent coaches, and positions. Some of the best friendships are made while meeting new team-mates. For the most part, if your daughter's friend does not end up on the same team, they will be playing against each other or at the field at the same time.

Sibling Players
Siblings are entitled to a discount per player. Requests for sisters to register and play on the same team will try to be honoured. We understand the schedule might otherwise require back-to-back games and parents would not be able to drive back and forth between games.

Number of Players
Everyone who registers before May 1st, 2023 will be drafted to an appropriate team. There is no limit to the number of players per division. The more players, the more teams. Everyone plays!

Important League Dates

Game Nights: Monday through Thursday either 6-8 or 8-10 p.m.
Monday and/or Wednesday: U9, U11, U13, U19
Tuesday and/or Thursday: U15, OPEN
Sunday practices: Handley field is available 12-4 and/or 6-8 p.m. Coaches will share practice times.
Regular registration runs from now until May 1, 2023
Pre-Season Conditioning: MAY 8 AND 9, 2023 - 6-8 P.M. AND 8-10 P.M. AT BOTH HANDLEY AND KELLY FIELDS
Season Opens: Tuesday, May 23, 2023 (weather dependant)
Fun Tournament: June 3 and 4, 2023
Playoffs - Tournament Format: August 19, 20, 2023

Volunteers
Parent volunteers are always appreciated and there is a place on the registration form for you to indicate your committment. Student volunteers will earn volunteer hours for high school - whether or not they are players. For example, if your son/brother wishes to volunteer at a tournament or BBQ, please let us know.

Coaches

All coaches are required to have a clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check. If you are interested in coaching or assisting a coach, please indicate this on your daughter's registration form.

Equipment - New for 2023

Players will be given a team jersey or shirt for games. This year we will have black ball pants available to purchase for only $10, prior to the season. These are second hand pants from prior years and need not be returned after purchase. Players will be expected to wear black ball pants for games (no leggings or shorts). There will be more information on our clearance sale soon. There are many different sizes available. Unforturnately, we cannot take reservations or holds. Players will be expected to wear their jersey tucked into black ball pants for all games. Please do not wear your team jersey for practices. Players should have their own glove, ball cleats (plastic cleats only not metal), pants, socks, and water bottle. Bats, batting helmets (with cage) and infield masks will be available to the coaches in a team equipment bag. Coaches will also have two sets of catcher gear available.

Philosophy of Play

This is house-league softball. Coaches will give equal / fair playing time to all players throughout the season. Players are encouraged to play different positions if they are interested, but will not be expected to play anywhere they are not comfortable. For example if a weaker player does not want to try a more difficult position, they will not be forced to try that position; players are encouraged to attend team practices to learn new skills. The batting cages at Handley Field belong to our association and all registered players will have an opportunity to practice there, with their coach and team. Players who are interested in more competitive play are encouraged to try out for a Select team. All players are encouraged to have open, respectful communication with their coach. Coaching is a volunteer position and we ask all players to show respect to thier coach by letting them know if they will miss a game or practice, or if they have a good reason for arriving late.

Select Teams - Blaze

Back this year after covid interruption! We will be holding tryouts for several select (travelling) teams - watch the FB page for try-out dates. Players must be registered to play in the regular league to be eligible for Select Teams. Additional fees may be required for those chosen to represent the North Bay Blaze Select teams. Please see the select information on this web-site.

Umpires

We are lucky to have some very skilled umpires, who do an excellent job night after night. Please remember mistakes can happen - umpires are human - please show respect. Our Umpire-in-Chief will be orgainizing some clinics for new umpires, this spring. Please watch the face-book page for details.

Brienne Longpre Award

Remembering a player with a recognition award.

Article published by BayToday.

The following is a Thank You Letter received from Kayla Hawkins after receiving the Brienne Longpre Memorial Award:

Dear Coaches, Executive and Longpre Family,

I would like to take this time to show my sincere appreciation towards everyone who recognized me for the Brienne Longpre Memorial
Award that I received last night at the banquet.  It truly is an honour to receive such an amazing and meaningful award.

As many of you may know, I have been a part of NBMGSA for many years. From mites to midget, and now moving on to the open division, I always try my best to keep a positive energy on the bench and on the field. I try to encourage everyone to do their best and also help out with the association whenever possible such as volunteering at the fun tournament, championships and also helping coach lower divisions  in past years.

I had the pleasure of being on Brienne’s team for 4 seasons in a row and I can honestly say that nobody out there put as much as an
effort in as her. It didn’t matter if she was stuck out in right field swatting bugs at our late games, or fielding a run down at third base,
she always put in 100% with a huge smile on her face and that’s something that we could all learn from her.

After losing Kurtis and Brienne, two very good friends of mine, in under two weeks, I have had time to sit down and really think
about just how special life is. Just like a game of ball, you can go from winning to losing with one crack of the bat.  It is amazing just
how quickly things can change within a matter of seconds. I’ve realized to embrace every opportunity with open eyes and always try my
best to do what I can for others with a smile on my face, just like Brienne would.

The bursary that I received will help me pay for my tuition. I will be attending Canadore College this fall in the Occupational and
Physiotherapist Assistant program. I am really looking forward to this next step in my life and it is very special to have received an award like this one to help me pay for my education.

Lastly, I would like to give a special thank you and recognize my two amazing coaches. Steve and Aaron, you taught me so much on and off the field this year. I would always go up to bat knowing that if I struck out, I would be batting at the bottom of the order for the next game. I have to say, it was excellent motivation. It was extremely thoughtful of you both to bring bases for girls to sign, make tee
shirts and present an award at the banquet. I know Brianne is looking down on both of you with that same smile on her face thanking you for what you did for not only her, but our team and the association.

Once again, I am extremely grateful to be acknowledged for this award and thank you all for everything you do for the
association.  I hope you all have a great last little bit of your summer!

See you all next season,
Kayla Hawkins

Year End Banquet Awards

Congratulations to all members of the NBMGSA for another successful season!

With a huge turnout for the banquet, everyone enjoyed the buffet put on by the Best Western staff.  Prizes were given away throughout the evening to all players as teams were called to the stage to receive year end medals, ribbons or t-shirts.  Each team's coaching staff handed out the Team MVP award and the Coach's Choice Award to outstanding young ladies.

A sombre presentation from the Longpre family brought back wonderful memories of Brienne and the presentation of a bursary in her name.  This year's recipient is Brigitte Kelly - a long time player who played in both the Midget and Open divisions this season and is moving on to post-secondary education in the fall.  She is a wonderful example of what our association promotes...a team player, sportsmanship, dedication to the game and fun. (see her Thank You letter below)

The Amberly Auger Award for the Hardest Working Player was presented to Hannah Michauville by Amberly Auger herself.  Hannah is a midget-aged player who has been with the association for many years.  She is a top pitcher in the league who strives for perfection on the mound.  She is a member of the Midget Select team.  This season she also coached a Mites division team, as volunteers were scarce.  She is also an umpire and photographer.  A well deserving recipient!

Thank you to all of our coaches this season!  Without active volunteers helping our girls with the game and skills, there would be no league.  Hope to see you all back again next year!

Dear North Bay Minor Girls Softball Association,
I am honoured to be the recipient of the Brienne Longpré award this past season. Having gone to school with her, I picked up on many of her great qualities as well as her remarkable mindset. I always admired how she always put others before herself and she would help anyone who was in need. I can't say I remember Brienne ever being down, she always seemed to find the bright side of things. Ever since I've known her I push to be inclusive, caring and open as she was. I am grateful to know that Brienne rubbed off on me through the years and that I was able to apply those traits to the sport. With that I send my sincere thanks to NBMGSA for giving me this award. As well as the bursary that I received that will be put to great use as I pursue my studies as an automotive service technician.

Sincerely,
Brigitte Kelly
