Umpire's Code of Conduct

As an umpire, I will conduct myself at all times in a way that demonstrates my commitment to the following:

  • Umpire's must help create a fun and safe environment in which to play.

  • Umpire's must treat everyone fairly and with respect.

  • Umpire's must always put player safety and health first by dealing aggressively with unsafe situations or player conduct. They should encourage players with appropriate safety and health leadership.

  • Umpire's must be positive role models for players. They must show emotional maturity by controlling their anger and never using obscene language or gestures. They should show a positive attitude toward the game and all its participants.

  • Umpire's must continue to work to develop their skills as an official.

10 Tips for Umpires

  1. Introduce yourself to the head coaches before each game and let them know the ages and backgrounds of the umpires officiating at the game.

  2. As time permits, explain each call to the  players involved so they know why a call went against them.

  3. Ignore the temptation to return inappropriate behavior with verbal comebacks.

  4. Don’t hesitate to report obnoxious coaches or parents to league officials so they can identify and take action against problem individuals.

  5. Use the preseason to regular season to talk with as many teams as possible during their parent meetings to remind them that most officials are learning their job just like the players.

  6. Build name recognition for the officials among coaches and parents. It is harder for parents and coaches to insult someone they know personally.

  7. Stay professional no matter how difficult the situation. Handling difficult coaches or spectators is, unfortunately, a part of the job.

  8. Resist the temptation to make calls based on a coach’s comments.

  9. Keep control of the game and situations. Don’t hesitate to warn or eject a coach, player or fan. The kids need to see incorrect behavior dealt with in order to learn correct behaviors.

  10. After a game, ask the other officials to give you feedback and guidance on how you performed and ways to improve before the next game.
