Game Rules
General notes:
Please remember you are on city property and that this facility is used by family groups. Based on the number of complaints we received last year, please let your team members know that foul and abusive language is not permitted, urinating on the field is not permitted and drinking alcohol on city property is not permitted. If your team drinks, please keep the beer cans in a bag or cooler and not visible on the field and take your beer cans with you or put them in the garbage can after the game. We cannot jeopardize our permit by receiving more complaints this year. Thank you.
The most important thing you can remember is that we are all here to have fun, get a little exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Please remember that there will be children present at most games. Foul language is not permitted under any circumstances. Any disagreements or questions regarding interpretation of the rules will be settled by the team captains at the field. Team captains are responsible for the behavior of their team members. Remember, it’s just a game and we are here for FUN!
Official NSA rules will be played with the following exceptions:
Game nights:
1) Each team will be playing once per week based on the schedule provided. Teams will play two complete six-inning games. If teams are tied at the end of six innings the game is recorded as a tie.
2) Game # 1 will start promptly at 6:30 pm and consist of six innings. There is a 15-minute grace period from scheduled start time to allow for traffic and tardiness. Should a team be unable to field a 7-person line-up by 6:45 pm, Game # 1 will be a forfeit. If a team is up 10 runs after five innings, the mercy rule would be in effect.
3) Game # 2 will start within 5 minutes of Game # 1 completion. This will allow sufficient time to restate your line-up and be ready to play. If Game # 1 was forfeited, should a team be unable to field a line-up by 6:55 pm then Game # 2 will also be a forfeit. A score of 10 – 0 will be entered for a forfeited game. Game #2 is timed.
4) Under no circumstances are new innings to be started after 8:50 pm.
5) A maximum of 5 runs per inning are allowed. Unlimited runs are allowed in the sixth inning if there a 10 run or less spread at the end of five innings. Otherwise the mercy rule is in effect.
6) The designated home team is responsible for the set up of the bases. The home team is the second team listed in the schedule for the first game. The home team also supplies the game ball in the first game. The team listed second on the second game is responsible for putting the equipment away. Teams are responsible for their own bats and balls. Only “Official Softball” or “Official Slo-pitch” labeled bats are allowed.
7) Scores must be e-mailed into the league office (lee_isaak@hotmail.com) or texted to (403) 863-1362 or both by the winning and losing team within a period of 3 days. If either team fails to do so a tie will be recorded. After each game it is up to captains to make sure that each team has the same score. If there is a difference of scores sent in, the difference of runs will be split (15-10 and 15-12 is sent in, 15-11 will be recorded). If there is a one run difference, the lower of the two scores will be recorded. Runs scored is the first tie breaker for playoff seeding so try to be accurate!!
8) Due to the varying nature of the weather across Calgary, rainouts can only be called at the diamond by agreement of the team captains. In circumstances where it has been raining/snowing continuously, the team captains have the authority to postpone the game via telephone prior to meeting at the diamond. It is important that team captains let your team members know of this situation. Team captains are also required to advise the league office (lee_isaak@hotmail.com) or texted to (403)863-1362 or both of games postponed due to inclement weather.
9) Alcohol is not permitted on the playing field.
10) All litter must be cleaned up.
11) Please note that dogs are not allowed on school property.
Line-ups:
1) You can bat as many players as you want on your line-up card.
2) The maximum number of players when on defense (fielding) is 10 players - 7 guys and 3 girls. You may play with 2 girls however an automatic out will be issued in place of the third girl in the batting line-up. You cannot play more than 7 guys in the field or with less than 7 players in total.
3) No more than 3 guys can hit consecutively in the batting order.
4) A player cannot be added to the line-up of a game in progress after the completion of the 3rd inning.
5) Unlimited substitutions will be allowed.
Rules of Play:
1) Games will be self-umpired. A member of the hitting team will supply an umpire. Umpire rulings are final.
2) Pitches must have an arc between 6 and 12 feet in height or a “no pitch” is to be called by the umpire and the ball is considered dead. A strike mat will be placed at home, if the pitch hits the mat and is between 6 and 12 feet high it is a strike.
3) Three called strikes and the batter is out. A third strike foul ball is an automatic out.
4) If a male batter is walked on four straight pitches and is followed in the order by a female batter, the female batter has the option of taking a walk as well.
5) Bunting is allowed for female batters only.
6) Sliding is allowed at second and third base only.
7) No base stealing. Runners can only advance on a hit or an overthrow.
8) No anticipation. If a base-runners foot breaks contact with the base prior to a hit, a strike will be issued to the batter. A warning will be issued to the offending team. If lead offs continue – the batter will be called out.
9) Runners can tag up and run on foul balls.
10) There will be no contact at home plate. A runner running home will run between the mat and the backstop. The catcher must stand on home plate (not the strike mat) for any force plays at home. There is no sliding at home and a runner cannot be tagged out at home.
11) A commitment line of 30 feet from third base will be in effect. Once a runner crosses the commitment line they must continue to home.
12) A courtesy line of 120 feet for outfielders and the base path for infielders will be issued for female batters. Rovers are allowed to play inside the courtesy line.
13) Runners may advance 1 base on an overthrow that leaves the field of play. If the ball doesn’t leave the playing field it is considered live.

16) When batting, the player in the “on deck circle” must be visible to the fielding team.
Local Rules:
1) Each team will be allowed a maximum of five home runs per game. Any ball that rolls into the gully, trees or onto the road is considered live. Once a team reaches five home runs in a game, any subsequent home run will be ruled a ground rule double. This should eliminate the discretionary calls on home runs vs ground rule doubles
2) New this year is the ?one up? rule. Where If team A hits five home runs, and Team B hits 5 home runs, each team is allowed one more homerun. If team A hits a 6th home run, and Team B hits a 6th home run, then each team is allowd a 7th home run and so on.....
Team B must hit their 6th home run before team A is allowed to hit their 7th home run.
