The Rutherford Junior Football Mighty-Mites (7yr olds) traveled to North Arlington to battle the Vikings. Heavy rains caused the field to be a giant mud pit and the Bulldogs were excited to play in it. The Vikings won the coin toss and opted to defer. On the first play from scrimmage the offensive line of Owen Meister, Virgil Minnick, Josh Glatman, Nick Brady, Chris Avramidis, Brendon Nestor and Derek Micek made sure the running hole was big enough for running backs Niko Tsiolas, Jale Schuman and Axel Ramos. Ramos ran off the left tackle and worked his way through the mud for a 60 yard touchdown. After the PAT was unsuccessful, the 'Dogs defense came out onto the field. A constant fresh rotation of players has been the plan for the Bulldogs this year and it proved to work again as the entire Bulldog team would rotate in. The defense forced a punt after three downs with not allowing the Vikings to advance the ball. A fresh rotation on offense also proved to be successful as Matt Bender, Matt Severino, John Petrosino, Rob Philp, Brendan Kelly and Mike Davies helped push the dogs down field. Another handoff from QB Bouabidi to Ramos for 45 yards this time made the score 12-0 at halftime. The second half N.A. came out determined and started to put a nice offensive drive together. On the 12 yard line, the Bulldogs defense made a stand and after four tries denied the Vikings to get any points on the board. When the Bulldogs took over on downs, it was two different backs that helped the 'Dogs move the ball. RB Anthony Doren took the handoff and ran 30 yards off the right tackle that took the Dogs out of the shadow of their own end zone. On the next play, Owen Meister swept to the left stiff arming his way down field for 30 yards before being forced out of bounds. With time running out, the Mighty-Mites posted their second shutout of the season with a final of 12-0. The Rutherford Pee Wee Bulldogs (7-0) clinched the Meadowlands Football League Southern Division Championship with their 41-0 win over the North Arlington Pee Wee Vikings. The game was played in less than favorable conditions turning out to be a mud bowl, before the highly anticipated Junior (10-11 year olds) & Senior (12-13 year olds) games were postponed. The Pee Wees (8-9 year olds) opened the night on defense and took over on offense after holding NA to a four and out. On the first play from scrimmage, Omar Abdelhamid took a handoff and rumbled in from 30 yards out. The Bulldogs converted their extra point when QB Rich Marques handed off to RB Jacob Munoz and he crossed the goal line untouched. Rutherford’s next score was a Tyler Aponte blast play to the right side from 5 yards out. After recovering a muffed kick, the little Dogs went to work again on offense. This time, FB Bill Finn took a 30 dive the distance for Rutherford’s third score and 21-0 lead. Rutherford’s defensive held NA to negative yards and got the ball back one more time before halftime, with one minute left. Marques faked a blast to Omar and handed off to John Kelly for an end around that went for 35 yards and a touchdown. Rutherford converted the extra point when Marques hit TE Joe Fisicaro on a five yard drag pattern, making the halftime score 28-0. The second half opened with Omar returning the kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown and Regan Landrigan taking a Sean Moran handoff for the extra point. The third and fourth quarters saw two more scores behind the running of Shawn Robin, Landrigan, Moran, Connor Cahill and Jusitin Finelli. The rest of the 2009 Southern Division Champions are as follows: Brian Hennessey, Jack Melfa, Eric Wernicki, Nick Ippolito, Greg Keller, Rich Doren, Chris Brady, Mike DeSteno, Anthony Dubeneczic, Lawson Fischer, Don Bagnuolo, Sebastian Gaeta, Liam Lynch, Matt Birchby, Dino DeFransisco, Coaches Bob Cahill, Rich Gaeta, Mike Paskas, Joe Fisicaro, Anthony Finelli and Keith Birchby. The Juniors and Seniors will make up their game during the week in NA. Next week, Rutherford is home on Saturday night, hosting Hasbrouck Heights. RJF will honor their 8th graders with a flower ceremony, in which the departing Cheerleaders & Players accompanied by their parents, will be called to midfield. RJF will also host the 2009 Mighty Mite day in which four games will be played among the eight active Meadowlands Football League seven year old squads.
