2024 Adult Tournament Rules

1) This year’s Adult's tournament will be played among sixteen (16) teams with six (6) players maximum per team.

2) Each team should ensure that EVERY PLAYER gets an opportunity to play EVERY GAME in all rounds. To enforce this, we are instituting the following mandates:

The team winning the coin toss will pick its starting 4.  Then the opposing team will pick their starting 4.

Starting 4-on-4 must play until one team hits 8 points or crosses 8 points.  At that point, the team with 8 (or more) must bring in BOTH players from the bench.  The two players coming in must play till their team hits 16, along with any two others the captain chooses.

The two players who just went out at 8 points may be freely substituted with either of the starting 2 currently on the floor at any time.

the 5th and 6th players must stay in the game until the team hits or crosses 16 points.  At your team’s 16 point mark, you are free to play anyone you deem fit.

Any team that is ever down by 10 points or more, is free to substitute and play who they deem fit at that time for the remainder of the game.

If the team that is down by 10 comes back to tie the game (or take the lead) while exercising the free-sub exception, the opposing team can also exercise free subs.

For fair game play if a team is playing a man down due to injury in the tournament or from the start of any game due to unforeseen circumstances, the opposing team cannot play the same or one round lower level player at the same time.  For example, if team A’s 1st round pick is not available to play the entire match, team B can’t have on the court their 1st round pick and 2nd round pick together at the same time.  Team A can have their pick 2, 3, 4 and 5 play against Team B’s pick 1, 3, 4 and 5.

In this scenario Both teams will substitute as follows:

Team with 5 players will bring in ONE bench player at 8 points (or over), and they will need to stay on the court until that teams gets to 16 (or over).  However, the above rule will still apply, where if Team A is missing their #1, then team B cannot ever have BOTH their 1 & 2 on the court together at any time.

Team with 6 players will bring in 1 player at 8 points (or over) and the 6th player at 12 points (or over). At 16 points, both teams can exercise free subs.

Another example, if Team A is missing their 4th Pick, then team B cannot have their 4th and 5th pick in the game together at any time.  Captains should review this before the game to ensure smooth substitutions.

         Injury Exceptions:

o   The doctor on the premise will recommend to the Draft Committee and they will have a final say on determining whether a player is allowed to come back into a game or be eligible to continue to play in the tournament after getting small treatment. (type of injuries - bumping knees, poked in the eye, cramping, broken noses etc.)

o   The doctor on the premise will recommend to the Draft Committee and they will have the final say if a player’s injury is deemed to be severe. The player is disqualified from continuing in the tournament for safety reasons.

3) Each team will play three (3) league games.

4) Each league and quarter-final game will be of 31 points and a team must win with the difference of two. So, whoever gets to 31 points first with the difference of two will be announced winner.

In a situation where none of the teams is leading with the difference of two even after reaching to 31 points, then whichever team reaches to 35 points (irrespective of point difference) first will be announced winner.

The below scenario will make it more clear

        29-31 Game over

30-31 Game goes till 1 team reaches 35

30-32 Game goes till 1 team reaches 35

        30-35 Game over

        31-35 Game over

        32-35 Game over

        33-35 Game over

        34-35 Game over

31-34 Game goes till 1 team reaches 35

32-34 Game goes till 1 team reaches 35

33-34 Game goes till 1 team reaches 35

34-34 Game goes till 1 team reaches 35

        32-35 Game over

Point differential will take into consideration final score even if one team has scored more than 31. So, for example if score is 30-29 and winning team hits a three, the final score will be recorded 33-29 with a 4 point differential given to winning team.

Second example if score is 31-32 and winning team hits a three, the final score will be recorded 31-35 with a 4 point differential given to winning team.

5) Each league and quarter-final game is played on half court only with 2's and 3's.

6) The ball will be played again back from the 3 point line after all defensive rebounds. This includes steals and airballs. ONLY ONE FOOT must cross the 3-point line and must clearly CROSS it.  You don’t need both feet to cross. Only offensive rebounds may go straight up. Out line will be clearly marked. Must pass once before shot after INITIAL check-in. Shot is defined as anytime ball hits backboard or rim.

7) Referees calls are final and can't be argued.

8) Fouls:

 #1: Shooting Foul

1 shot plus possession if you miss the basket on a 2-pointer.  2 shots plus possession on a 3-ponter – up until 6 team fouls

1 Shot plus possession if you make the basket (AND 1) – basket counts.  This includes 2’s and 3’s

On the 7th team foul and beyond:  2 shots plus possession.  1 Shot plus possession if you make the basket (AND 1) – basket counts

Lane violation on free-throw voids free throw.  If the shooter touches the free-throw line before the ball hits the rim, you lose the free-throw BUT keep possession.

#2: Non-Shooting Foul (penalty)

On the 7th team foul – 1 shot + possession.  Person getting fouled will shoot the free throw

#3: Flagrant Fouls

1 in pool play of tournament – ejected for current game and the following game

1 in playoffs - ejected for current game and following game

2 in tournament – ejected for remainder of tournament

#4: Technical or Flagrant Fouls

        2 foul shots and possession

Player/coach is ejected for earning 2 technical fouls at any point during the tournament

9) This is a friendly tournament and should be played in that spirit so each team captain must inform the players of the foul rules,

10) We will have charts printed out where each team can keep scores of the games being played, this will be done by the player who is not playing.

11) Each player and captain must report to the main desk 30 minutes before their 1st scheduled game.

12) Each team must report to their designated court at-least ten (10) minutes before the scheduled game.

13) Each team has allowed maximum of two (2) timeouts per game in addition to any injury timeouts called by ref.

14) Injury timeout - (ref will call) max 5 min for same player to return no matter what otherwise game to continue.

15) A coin toss will decide the possession of the ball first.  Except playoffs - see below - higher seed starts with the ball.

16) After every game both the captains will sign the score sheet and rank the opposite team's players. The signed score sheets will be the final scores.

17) Defense MUST stay behind three point line before first pass of the ball. Defense can't cross three point line till ball is released by first player who receives check in.

18) If ball is checked in it is live.

19) If ball hits any obstruction over backboard or hanging from the ceiling or any other area that falls above the playing court than the ball is considered out and the possession changes.

20) Five second violation in paint for offense only. No Team foul will be charged and ball will change possession

21) On offense, a player must pass the ball once before hitting backboard or rim on initial check-in.

22) Winners ball.  Team scoring basket retains possession.

23) Anyone can sub in on dead ball or a score once the referee has been informed. This is subject to the above rules.

24) All fouls are, AND ONE, meaning if foul is on shot, point counts.

25) After any out of bounds or other stoppage, ball must be checked in up top behind three point line.

26) We will have charts printed out where each team can keep scores of the games being played. All captains must sign score sheets, rank opposing team players 1-10 with 10 being the best and deliver signed, ranked score sheets @ main table.  Uncompleted sheets will not be accepted and scores will not be registered for both teams.

27) Finals will be played with as per below, fouls etc as per college rules.

28) Since this is a community event, there will be NO cursing or unsportsmanlike conduct allowed whatsoever. refs will be instructed to call this strictly with a tech to any player that commits the foul.

29) If any sort of confusion/argument will come up in the course of the tournament, the Competition committee will take the final decision, after considering the Referee’s opinions.

30) **New foul-out rule** Each player is allowed up to 5 personal fouls per game.  On their 6th personal foul, they are out for the remainder of the game.

The Final Game:

See below for ranking system changes and team merging

The Final will have four (4) quarters.  The first and second quarters will be 10 minutes each with running clock.  The third and fourth quarters are 12 minutes each with NBA style stopped clock and 24-second shot clock

Game Play Rules - Tweaked College Rules

5 vs. 5 - Full Court

In addition to merging teams as above, each combined team will receive two players each from the 14-15 age tournament as selected by the committee based on their performance.

These four players are only available to play the 1st half of the finals in quarter 1 and quarter 2.

To facilitate participation of all players in the finals, the first and second quarters must be played without each team’s 1st round and 2nd round picks.  That will leave each combined team with 10 players to choose from for quarter 1 and quarter 2 (8 players remaining + 2 from 14-15 year tournament).

For quarters 1 and 2, captains can substitute players as they wish on any dead ball except the 4 players excluded (1st and 2nd round picks).

For quarters 3 and 4, the four players selected from the 14-15 year tournament WILL NOT be eligible to play.

For quarters 3 and 4, the match will continue as free play.  Captains can play whichever 5 players they choose including their 1st and 2nd round picks.  Substitutions can be made on any dead ball.

First half will be running clock with 2 x 10-minute quarters

Second half will be stopped clock with 2 x 12-minute quarters

TIE-BREAKER ROUND STANDINGS AFTER LEAGUE ROUND:

(Following rules will be applicable and will overwrite the online scoring display table in case if teams are tied)

Two Way Tie (When only 2 teams are tied together)

When two teams are tied with the same record, then the rankings of the tied teams will be determined by the following scenarios:

#1: Head-To-Head

If the two tied teams have played against each other (head to head) in the league round, then the team that won that league game will be ranked ahead.

#2: Point Differential

If the clause #1 is not applicable, then for the two teams tied, the team with the higher point differential (total points scored subtracted from total points given) from all the league games will be ranked ahead.

#3: Chit Drawing

If the two teams are still tied, then a chit drawing will be used to rank the tied teams.

Three Way Tie (When only 3 or more teams are tied together)

When three or more teams are tied with the same record, then the rankings of the tied teams will be determined by the following:

#1: Head-To-Head

(If three or more teams have the same record, head to head will be considered ONLY if any of the teams has played ALL of the teams in that tie group and won or lost all the games within that group.)

If any one team of the tied teams has played against all other tied teams (head to head) in the league round, and that team, that has won those league games, will be ranked ahead OR vice versa. If any one team of the tied teams has played against all other tied teams (head to head) in the league round, and that team, that has lost those league games they will be ranked behind.

#2: Point Differential

If the clause #1 is not applicable, then for the two teams tied, the team with the higher point differential (total points scored subtracted from total points given) from all the league games will be ranked ahead.

#3: Chit Drawing

If teams are still tied, then a chit drawing will be used to rank the tied teams.

STANDINGS FOR PRE-QUARTER:

Upon completion of the league round (3 games), teams will be ranked from 1 to 16.

The bottom 4 will get eliminated.

The top 4 will get a bye to the quarter-finals and will be ranked from #1 to #4.

The middle 8 will play a one-game pre-quarter final playoff round with all of the above rules.

The results of these pre-quarter games will get added onto the winners’ league records to play the quarter finals.

We will then re-rank these 4 pre-quarterfinal winners based on the following conditions:

#1: Total WIN points (League games + Pre-quarter game)

#2: Head-To-Head

#3: Point Differential (League games + Pre-quarter game)

#4: Chit Drawing

These 4 teams will then be ranked from #5 to #8 and will play a one-game playoff against the  top 4 teams from the league rounds in reverse order (i.e. 1vs8, 2vs7, 3vs6, 4vs5).  \

STANDINGS FOR THE FINALS:

The HIGHEST remaining seed will merge with the lowest remaining seed as the first finalist team.  The middle two seeds will merge to form the other finalist team.

For example, see the below scenario:

-       In a game between 1 vs 8, team 1 loses

-       In a game between 2 vs 7, team 2 wins

-       In a game between 3 vs 6, team 3 loses

-       In a game between 4 vs 5, team 5 wins

then the order of teams for the final will be as below:

-       Team 2 >> Highest seed and will be Finalist 1

-       Team 5 >> Second highest seed and will be Finalist 2

-       Team 6 >> Third highest seed and will be Finalist 3

-       Team 8 >> Fourth highest seed and will be Finalist 4

-       As per the above example, Team 2 and Team 8 will merge to make first final  team and Team 5 and Team 6 will merge to make second final team

IN all the Playoff Games, the higher seed will always start with the first possession
