2024 JCC Kids Rules

  1. There are a total of Five (5) Kids teams (Age group 10 to 13) for the 2024 Championship.
  2. Each team will play against every other team once (1 time), making a total of four (4) league games per team.
  3. There will be four (4) quarters in each league game and there will be seven (7) minutes per quarter. Clock will be running except for the final two (2) minutes of each half (Q2, Q4).
  4. The game will be played 4 on 4 (four players per team on the court).
  5. 1st & 3rd Quarters – Kids assigned to Group A will play. The ball size for this age group will be 28.5
  6. 2nd & 4th Quarters –Kids assigned to Group B will play. The ball size for this age group will be 29.5
  7. If a team has less than 4 players, both teams must play 3-on-3. For fair game, the opposing team cannot play the same or one round lower level player at the same time.  For example, if team A’s 1st round pick is not available to play the entire match, team B can’t have on the court their 1st round pick and 2nd round pick together at the same time.

    1. Sub Rules for 3-on-3 play:  the team having 4 players must sub in their bench player for a minimum of 8 minutes per game. Coaches should discuss this prior to the game and make sure each child gets the playing time they deserve. This is still subject to the above rule where you cannot play the same pick and one lower at the same time.

  1. At all times, all players must play in their assigned groups only. If any coach/team puts a player in a group that they do not belong to (i.e., a Group A player plays in Group B or a player in Group B plays in Group A), then it will result in a forfeit for the team that violated the rule or the opposite team winning the game. **THIS IS A NEW RULE**
  2. A coin toss will decide the possession of the ball first.
  3. After every game both the coaches will sign the score sheet. The signed score sheets will be the final scores.
  4. Game is played under Winner’s ball format

Substitution Rules

  1. At first dead-ball after 3 minutes have elapsed in every quarter, teams must substitute their 5th player for the remainder of the quarter; teams can sub any player on the court. The player who went out may be substituted for any of the 3 starters at any time. It is encouraged that the coach rotates players in order to best distribute playing time as evenly as possible.

  1. If a team is down by ten (10) points or more in the 4th quarter, then the team has the option to play any four players from Group B.

  1. If a player is injured or unavailable then the opposing team cannot play their compliment player (same round draft pick) and the player from one round below at the same time. For example, if a #2 player is injured on Team 1, then Team 2 cannot play their #2 and #3 at the same time.

  1. If team A loses a player due to disciplinary reasons, the above rule applies. Except if team A is winning in the 4th quarter. If team A is winning in the 4th quarter, then team B is allowed to play any of their players and disregard the fairness rule above.

Foul Rules:

  1. If fouled in the act of shooting and you made the basket, then the basket counts, and you receive one bonus free throw and possession.

  1. If fouled in act of shooting and you miss basket, then two free throws and line up for rebound on the 2nd free throw.

  1. If fouled in the act of shooting a 3 pointer and you miss the basket, then three free throws and line up for rebound on the 3rd free throw.
  2. The referee's calls are final and can't be argued.

Team Fouls:

  1. If the team accumulates a total of seven (7) fouls per half, then they are in the penalty. It is a 1-and-1 situation on the 7th foul–you line up for rebounds. Once the team hits ten (10) total fouls, then it goes to two (2) free throws on the 10th foul–you line up for rebounds; this is per half. As in normal basketball, you line up for rebounds. To prevent intentional fouling, the coach for the free-throw shooting team may decide who will shoot the free throws once the team is in the penalty.

  1. Kids in Group A will have the option to shoot free throws from one-feet (1’) ahead of the foul line; whereas kids in Group B will shoot free throws from the foul line.

  1. Foul Out: TO DISCUSS FOR LEAGUE GAMES SINCE WE ARE 5 PLAYERS
    1. Group A: 6 Fouls + 7th Foul (Out of Game)
    2. Group B: 5 Fouls + 6th Foul (Out of Game)

Clock Management:

  1. Free throws may not take more than ten (10) seconds each. Clock shall stop after 10 seconds are up.

Take Backs:

  1. All defensive rebounds and defensive turnovers must be taken back to the three-point-line. One foot must clearly cross the three-point-line for the ball to be considered taken back; both feet do not need to cross. Simply touching the three-point-line will NOT be considered taken back. A violation of the take-back rule will result in the play being blown dead and a change of possession.

  1. Offensive possessions always start behind the three point line.

Free Pass:

  1. When checking in, the offensive team must pass once before they shoot–one free pass behind the 3 point line is permitted.
  2. Defensive players are not to cross this line until the ball is touched by a second player. 1st violation is a warning, any subsequent violation results in a free throw by someone chosen by the offensive coach. The free-throw shooting team retains possession.

Overtime Rules:

  1. Free throws are shot by all children on the team. The team with the most free throws made after the first round wins. If still tied, you do the same thing in double overtime.

  1. Group A has the option to shoot from up to one feet (1’) closer for both teams.

Timeouts:

  1. One timeout per team per quarter is allowed in the first half (Q1, Q2).  Two timeouts per quarter are allowed in the 2nd half (Q3, Q4). Each timeout may last up to 45 seconds.
  2. Timeouts may only be called on your team’s possession or on a dead ball situation.
  3. Calling a timeout when you don’t have one is a technical foul. 1 free throw and possession by the other team.

5-Second Violation:

  1. There is a 5-second violation for offensive players in the paint.  Any player who stays in the paint area without the ball for 5 seconds will be called for this violation–it is simply a turnover and a change of possession.

Playoff Format:  The top four teams will advance to finals. Teams 4 and 5 will play a play-in game to see who is ranked # 4 and advance to the final. (In case of a tie, please refer to the section Tournament Tie Breaker Rules)

9. The kids in Group B are only allowed full-court press in the final two minutes of each quarter.

10. 11.  Each child is allowed a total of 5 personal fouls in the final.  On the 6th personal foul, they will be fouled out and cannot return to the game.

12. Team Fouls:  On the 7th foul of each half, the opposing team is in the bonus with a 1-and-1.  On the 10th foul of each half, the opposing team is in the double bonus with 2 free throws.

Tournament Tie Breaker Rules for Ranking after League Round:

(Following rules will be applicable and will overwrite the online scoring display table in case if teams are tied)

Two Way Tie (When only 2 teams are tied together–means they have WON the same number of games (in other words same number of win points))

When two teams are tied with the same record, then the rankings of the tied teams will be determined by the following scenarios:

#1: Head-To-Head:

If the two tied teams have played against each other (head to head) in the league round, then the team that won that league game will be ranked ahead.

Three-Way Tie (When 3 or more teams are tied together–means they have WON the same number of games (in other way same number of win points))

When three or more teams are tied the Head to Head will NOT be applicable. And the following scenarios will be applicable.

#1: Point Differential:

The team with the higher AVERAGE point differential (total points scored minus total points allowed) from all league AND playoff games will be ranked ahead.

#2: Chit Drawing: (Not to be used if the tied team is being eliminated)

If the teams are still tied, then a chit drawing will be used to rank the tied teams.

MVP VOTING FOR LEAGUE GAMES (1 FOR GROUP A & 1 FOR GROUP B)

Each of the 5 coaches will get a ballot with 2 lines on it.  At the end of each game, they will put in the names of the players who they feel were the most impactful to the game. This is not a scoring contest. This is about impact, whether through defense, rebounding, offense, passing, hustle, leadership or a healthy combination of all aspects of basketball and sportsmanship.  Coaches, with the help of any assistants, will put these names in order of #1 to #2.

Points will be allotted as follows:

-       5 points for first place MVP

-       3 points for second place MVP

Once we have all the ballots back, we will tabulate all the points and announce the MVP winner.  If any kids are tied in voting, they will be co-MVPs and share the honor. There will be separate MVPs for Group A and Group B. You will vote on 2 different
