HOW THE LAWN DAWGS BECAME NAMED

Well with my never ending life quest to be unique our Team name presented a great challenge for me. Originality when it comes to sports team names is very hard to come by these days. One just needs to go to League Lineup's " Find Your Site " and plug in whatever potential team name pops into your head to find a half of a dozen and most of the times a considerable amount more teams with that name then you would have ever imagined. So I ended up using a combination of things.

While watching the 2004 College Baseball World Series, yes baseball, there was a team from Long Beach California. This team had adopted the nickname " The Dirt Dogs " because of how dirty they would be after practice due to the fact that the field they used was ALL dirt, infield and outfield. They said that they didn't like it at first, being that dirty at the end of practice all the time but after awhile it was a badge of honor, a testament of hard work. So that started me thinking. It still took a few weeks for it to fall into place though. In speaking with a guy I grew up with who has since moved away, we were remembering the neighborhood we grew up in, yes, in North Babylon where I am from. My friend Dean brought up Mr. Gas, he was an old man that lived next door to me and was the type of guy that whenever one of our balls went in his yard he would Run ( well, sort of run for his age ) out of the house and take whatever ball it was. Yelling the entire time " You kids are always on my lawn, why don't you play on your own lawns and stay off of mine !! Needless to say, at times when we were bored we would do it on purpose. Looking back it probably wasn't nice but hey, neither was Mr. Gas. After hanging up the phone I started thinking about those times and how I could never understand why someone would get so upset about kids running on their grass to retrieve their ball or what the heck he did with all the balls that he basically stole from us, never giving them back and then it clicked. All along I wanted something unique, had to have some attitude but not cross the line of arrogance, had to apply to the game somehow.

With soccer being played on the grass, usually other people's grass, the concept of the Dirt Dogs and hard work. The fact that people never want stray dogs on their grass either, the way Mr. Gas would react. Well it just all made sense. Lawn Dawgs, googled it, msn searched it, then League Lineup site searched it. The only hits I got were a Landscaping company and a "B" movie with that title but spelled differently, I believe about a Landscaper also.

I walked around for a day saying it to myself and then tried it out on a few folks. When I got the " What the heck are you talking about, Lawn Dawgs ? Look on their faces, I knew that I had it. It isn't easy being different or unique but with my perseverance it always pays off in the end !!!

And this is how the team came about being named the Lawn Dawgs.
