The senior netted the lone score in the 1-0 victory for top-seeded East Brunswick over fourth-seeded Bishop Ahr in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament semifinals in East Brunswick. The goal assured East Brunswick a chance to defend its title against second-seeded Old Bridge, No. 12 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, which topped third-seeded South Brunswick, 2-1, in the other semifinal.
"I felt the goalie on my back, so I wasn't going to stop and take a shot," DiLiberto said. "So I just kind of flicked it with the outside of my foot. It was incredible."
Katherine McCulley lobbed a pass into the East Brunswick attacking third. DiLiberto somehow got to the ball before the Bishop Ahr keeper, getting a foot on it to direct it into the net.
"I ran up to the ball and played it over the top, Ellie worked her butt off to get there," McCulley said. "It was just great."
It was a physical game in which both goaltenders shined. Bishop Ahr's Brianna Foster made a stunning save on a shot that seemed destined for the upper left corner minutes before halftime. Gabrielle Benzillo responded with a big stop of her own, punching a shot from distance over the crossbar early in the second half.
"That's as good a save as you'll see a high school keeper make," East Brunswick coach Kevin Brady said. "She turns and rotates her hips, technically perfect, tips that ball over the top. It's the only play she has on that."
Bishop Ahr was the aggressor for much of the first half and got the early scoring chances. But as the half progressed, East Brunswick was holding onto the ball more and finding opportunities of its own.
"The first 10 or 20 minutes, I thought they had all the play," Brady said of Bishop Ahr. "But I thought about 20 minutes into that first half, I actually turned to my assistant coach and said, 'I think we found our legs a little bit now.' Because we just looked a little bit frantic in the beginning."
