Alexa Povelaitis and her Bishop Ahr teammates were a little frustrated at halftime of yesterday’s Greater Middlesex Conference-White Division clash with Colonia, so they decided to take a collective deep breath during the break and play the type of soccer they’ve been playing all season.
Leading 1-0 at the half, Bishop Ahr scored three times in the final 40 minutes to post a 4-0 victory for the second time this season over Colonia. Povelaitis, a junior from Sayreville, led the way with three goals and one assist to give her 14 and 7 on the season.
Bishop Ahr, winners of the last three Blue Division titles (sharing with Metuchen last year), captured the White Division title with the victory in its first year in the new division.
Bishop Ahr, which starts two juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen, improved to 10-0 in division play and 11-2 overall with its only losses coming against Bridgewater-Raritan, ranked No. 9 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, and to Old Bridge, teams with a combined record of 16-5-1. Colonia, which started five freshmen and three sophomores, fell to 4-9-1.
Bishop Ahr recorded its seventh shutout with junior goalie Brianna Foster notching four saves.
“They were very physical,’’ said Povelaitis. “So in the second half, we really had to stay calm, keep our heads and play our game.’’
Bishop Ahr, which out-shot Colonia, 15-7, broke a scoreless tie with 4:46 left in the first half when Claire Dundon put a spin move on her defender and flicked a pass to the left side where Povelaitis drove it home from 15 yards away to the right side of the goal.
“We were frustrated and sluggish in the first half with the weather and the fact we had played at night the day before,’’ said Bishop Ahr coach Jim Tavormina, whose record is 71-14-8 as the fifth-year head coach. “I thought they were getting physical with us, and when Lindsey (Scarmozzino) went down for the third time, that kind of sparked a fire under us. So in the second half, we took a deep breath and played more of our game.’’
Colonia, which had one golden chance to take a 1-0 lead but had the ball sail just a shade over the crossover, hung tough in the second half before Bishop Ahr claimed a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute. A pass by Scarmozzino from the middle of the field to Samantha Driscoll on the right, led to a feed which Povelaitis converted into an easy goal from the middle from 15 yards out.
Bishop Ahr then scored twice in the final 2:50 on a breakaway by Povelaitis and a goal by freshman Jillian Vassallo from close range after a blocked shot by Colonia goalie Juli Wright.
“We like where we’re at,’’ said Tavormina. “We knew we could challenge for the division, and we feel like we’re still improving.’’
Home Vs Perth Amboy (Senior Night) = WIN 5-0
Away @ North Brunswick = WIN 2-0
Away @ Bridgewater-Raritan = Loss 1-2 OT
Away @ Sayreville = WIN 3-1
Bishop Ahr (3) at Sayreville (1) - Girls Soccer
Star-Ledger, September 27, 2012 10:11 p.m.
By Rich Bevensee
The Bishop Ahr girls knew they would be in for a tougher matchup with Sayreville the second time around. No more four-goal flurries in the first 18 minutes and a lopsided victory like the last time.
But the contest meant just as much to Bishop Ahr as it did to Sayreville, which suffered its only loss of the season against the Edison program and was seeking revenge. Bishop Ahr was aiming to unseat Sayreville as the Greater Middlesex Conference, White Division champion.
Thanks to a solid amount of possession and some deft scoring, Bishop Ahr is now in the White Division driver’s seat, as Lindsey Scarmozzino, Claire Dundon and Tonilynn Taranto each contributed a goal in a 3-1 victory yesterday in Parlin.
Dundon’s goal in the 67th minute was the game-winner. She dribbled nearly 40 yards unguarded before uncorking an 18-yarder into the upper right corner.
“I couldn’t play in the first Sayreville game because I broke my wrist, so this is one of my first few games back, so it felt amazing being back,” Dundon said. “I asked my teammates what to expect -- how do I need to play? -- and they said just be aggressive. I came out expecting their hardest and it paid off.”
Bishop Ahr played a patient offense, and that’s how the first goal was set up, as Lindsey Scarmozzino converted an Alexa Povelaitis centering pass in the 20th minute.
Sayreville (6-2) evened the match 10 minutes into the second half, when Kim Stratton sent a ball down the side of the 18-yard box to Alissa Godwin, whose first shot bounded off Bishop Ahr keeper Brianna Foster right back to Godwin, who followed her shot and did not miss her second chance.
Dundon’s goal actually triggered wave after wave of Bishop Ahr advances for the last 25 minutes of the contest. Tonilynn Taranto broke Sayreville’s back in the 78th minute, when her corner kick bent into the far post and bounced into the net for a much needed insurance goal.
``Definitely since the loss, we been working to be a better team: Start from the first whistle and play our hardest,’’ Sayreville’s Godwin said. ``We’ve been pumped since the beginning of the week. We wanted this game. We played well, but once they scored the second goal I think we gave up a little bit and that’s when they took advantage.’’
Away @ Edison = WIN 1-0
Away @ South Plainfield = WIN 4-1
Claire Dundon added a goal and an assist, Alexa Povelaitis also scored, while Jill Vassallo chipped in with two assists for Bishop Ahr (6-1), which led 2-0 at the half. Brianna Foster posted six saves in goal for Bishop Ahr, which outshot South Plainfield, 18-7.
Home Vs Colonia = WIN 4 - 0
Home Vs North Brunswick = WIN 6 - 0
Jessica Maimone and Alexa Povelaitis had a goal and two assists each as Bishop Ahr had six different players score in a 6-0 victory over North Brunswick in Edison.
Christina Canestri, Jill Vassallo, Lisa Beck and Reilly Mullin all scored, while Isabel Vasquez recorded two assists for Bishop Ahr (4-1), which outshot North Brunswick (0-4), 20-1.
Away @ Perth Amboy = WIN 3 - 0
Home Vs Oldbridge = Loss 4 - 3 DOUBLE OT
After tying the game with five seconds left in regulation on a goal by Nicole Brennan, Sam Potts scored with 3:30 left in the second overtime with an assist by Brennan as Old Bridge posted a thrilling 4-3 victory over Bishop Ahr in a Greater Middlesex Conference crossover yesterday in Edison.
Brennan opened the scoring for Old Bridge 2:30 into the contest with an assist from Christina Shannon. Tonilynn Taranto then scored for Bishop Ahr (2-1), which was the first goal scored on Old Bridge this season.
After Old Bridge (3-0) went on top on a goal by Ashley Cafarella following a direct kick by Shannon, Bishop Ahr took a 3-2 lead on goals by Gianna Taranto and a penalty kick by Tonilynn Taranto with 14:30 left in the second half.
On the tying goal, Brennan took a through ball from Coletti, and, after a few dribbles, drilled in a shot to the upper left part of the goal from 12 yards out.
In overtime, Potts, a sophomore, took a feed from Brennan inside the 18 and scored the game-winner into the top right corner of the net.
Sam Nelson and Alley Maurer had fives saves each in goal for Old Bridge and Brianna Foster had 10 saves for Bishop Ahr. Old Bridge outshot Bishop Ahr, 16-13.
"It was a wild game, that's for sure,'' said Old Bridge coach Rob Lozzi. "Both teams played well. Bishop Ahr is a very aggressive team. They tried to disrupt our game, but we were able to withstand their aggressiveness. They played a kick and run style of game and we played more on the ground, looking for the seams. It was a great game, they are a serious team.''
