Legion 147 Softball – Month in review – May 2012

Hello fellow players and softball enthusiasts. The opening month of our 2012 season is already behind us and there is plenty to discuss. The committee is very pleased with how the season has started and we hope all of you share our excitement for what the rest of the season will bring. So let us get this month in review started…..

Nominees for player of the month of May 2012.

  • Jay Smith: Leading the league in HRs (5), walks (5), on base % (.720)

If you would have said that Jay Smith would have been able to pass his 2011 season totals in the month of May only, we probably would have believed youJ.  Everywhere you look, former Expos are wondering whether to be proud of their ex-teammate, or whether they prefer to keep forgetting that summer-2011 ever happened.

  • Gregg Girard: Leading the league in batting average (.706), doubles (5), and RBIs (17)

The captain of the Red Ninjas is off to a red hot start. When Gregg heard about the triple-crown betting going on with some of the big boys, he must have decided that he wanted in.

  • Dave Reddick.

By posting an impressive ERA of 4.00 after three games, Dave has begun the season looking an awful like Roy Halladay. However much like “Doc” he is also missing run support from the rest of his team. What’s the prescription for giving up only two runs and earning a loss in the Legion softball league? We`ll have to wait and see.

Please refer to the league website and add your vote to the message board. Simply click on the “Forum” link, sign up, and reply with your vote. The winner will be announced on the league site under the section “Player of the Month” on June 8th.

Red Ninjas are in first place…… with the most league dues collected.

The standings for teams with the most money collected are as follows. Show some pride and help your team move up a spot (or four).

1.     Red Ninjas = $1,350 (61% collected)

2.     Rebels = $1,185 (54% collected)

T3  Blue Jays = $935 (43% collected)

T3  A’s = $935 (43% collected)

5.   Orange Crush = $895 (41% collected)

Further information about the deadline for “no-pay-no-play” will be announced soon. Please try to have at least $100 (half of your season total) in by this week if you have not done so already.

UMPIRES

If anyone is interested in umpiring a few games, don’t be shy. It’s a great way to make new friends, we promise. Don’t worry, you are not obliged to umpire shirtless, that’s just the way Pat Bayne does things. In seriousness, Umpiring pays 30-35$ for behind the plate, and $5 for the bags. It’s a great way to earn money towards either your season dues, or your beer tab. Send a shout to the committee if you are interested.

M&M Super Saturday

Don’t think we could have asked for a more beautiful day to spend the afternoon playing ball and to finish it off with some juicy burgers. The turnout at the Legion was not as high as we would have liked, however, those who were able to make it had a good time, and ate like champs. We also got to see Josh Hamilton hit his walk off home run against the Blue Jays in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Magazine store and Custom Apparel stores available on the league site.

Some of you may have been wondering what the "store" links on the site are all about…

For anyone looking to help support the league, take a few minutes to check out the magazine store and the custom apparel store. A portion of all purchases will be returned to the league’s operations for the year. Cheap magazines and pretty good looking clothing!
