Smithfield Wrestling Wins First Regional Title!!!!

For the first time in Smithfield’s wrestling program history, the wrestling team captured a Regional Championship title, which was hosted at Smithfield High School on 11 Feb.  The team also achieved a program record of 11 champions for 2nd year Head Coach Tony Leonard.  For nearly a quarter century the team has been chasing a regional title coming up just short in 2015, 2016, and 2020 seasons as the runner up.

All 14 Smithfield wrestlers will advance to the 4A State Championships, which will be held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center this Saturday, 20 Feb.   Due to COVID-19 VHSL restrictions, no fans will be allowed in attendance, those interested in following the team’s progress at States can do so on Trackwrestling.

Packers Tie for 2nd at 4A-Regional, Advance 6 Wrestlers to States

The Smithfield wrestling team competed in the 4A-South Regional Tournament at Hanover this past weekend.  The Packers finished the first day in fifth place and quickly began to gain steam in the later rounds moving up to 3rd place going into the finals.  In the final match of the evening, Smithfield trailed Glen Allen by 4 points, but Ross Manfred's (285 lbs) win gave the Packers 4 additional points, tying Glen Allen at 140 team points for second place in the team standings.

Smithfield was able to move 7 of the 13 wrestlers into the medal rounds, capturing 2 regional titles, and advancing six to the State tournament in the Salem Civic Center this Friday & Saturday.  Advancing to States are: John Swartz (132), Tyler Sharon (145), Stan Smeltzer (160), Ben Jones (170), Keanu Carr (195), and Ross Manfred (285).

Padraig McGowan (106, Fr.), Seamus McGowan (113, Fr.), and Carson King (120, So.) lost their first two matches and were eliminated from the tournament.

John Swartz (132, So.) won his first match against Glen Allen, then lost by decision to Nanosecond River in the quarter-finals.  John the defeated Powhatan and Woodrow Wilson to setup at consolation semi-final rematch with Zachary Andrews (Tabb) in which Andrews had prevailed in the seconds of the finals the week earlier at Conferences.  Swartz, dominated the match and pinned Andrews in the second period where he then lost to Nansemond River to take 4th place and become the first Packer to advance to States.

Preston Jones (138, So.) went 2-2 in arguably in the region's most deeply talented weight class in the tournament.  Preston lost his first match to Hanover, then defeated Lakeland and Nansemond River to advance to consolation quarter-finals where lost to Glen Allen and was eliminated.

Tyler Sharon (145, So.) opened his regional run securing falls over JR Tucker and Heritage to advance to the championship semi-finals. Sharon defeated Hanover by decision to become the first of three Packers to advance to the finals.  Tyler soundly defeated Kaeon Minor (Lake Taylor) by a major decision become the 145lb champion and second Packer to advance to States.

Washington to setup a semi-final match with defending state champion, Corbin Allen (Hanover) and the tournament's outstanding wrestler, where he lost by fall.  In the consolation semi-finals he easily defeated Grafton and then Nairobi Windley (Woodrow Wilson) to take third place and become the third packer to advance to States.

Ben Jones (170, Jr.) defeated Heritage and Booker T. Washington to advance to the championship semi-finals against JR Tucker.  Ben won the bout by decision to become the second packer in the finals against Chip Sturek (Glen Allen) where he lost by major decision to take second place and the fourth Packer to advance to States.

Taylor Machart (182, So.) won his first match over Heritage by forfeit and lost a razor close 3-4 decision to Deep Creek.  In his next match against Caroline, An injury from earlier In the week forced him early in the 1st period to injury default and was eliminated from the tournament.

Keanu Carr (195, Sr.) won his first matches against Kings Fork and JR Tucker to advance to championship semi-finals where he lost to Glen Allen.  Keanu the won his consolation semi-final match against Dinwiddie to set up a rematch with Tahlik Banks (JR Tucker) where lost by fall. Carr, the team's only competing senior and in just his second year, took 4th place to become the fifth Packer to advance to States.

TJ Pope (220, Jr.) won his first match against Phoebus and then lost the quarter-final match to tournament champion Tanner Lacey (Hanover).  In the consolations, TJ defeated Booker T. Washington and Kings Fork to advance to the consolation semi-finals where he lost to Powhatan.  In the 5th/6th place match, TJ lost to Eric Carbin (Woodrow Wilson) to take 6th place.

Ross Manfred (285, Jr.) advanced to the quarter-finals by BYE, the quickly pinned Booker T. Washington to setup a third rematch with Nansemond River's Dia Gray.  Ross has only lost 3 matches all season and two of them Gray in their last two outings.  However, Saturday was Ross' night defeating Gray 3-1 to advance to the championship finals against Malik Williams (Dinwiddie).  Ross's only other loss this season had been to Malik at New Kent early in the season.  Again Ross dominated the mat, defeating Malik 4-1 to become Smithfield's second champion of the evening, sixth and final wrestler to advance to State, as well as avenge all of his regular season losses.

Packers Repeat For Back-to-Back Conference 19 Titles

It was another great Conference outing for the Smithfield Packers, defending their Conference 19 title and widening the team score gap even farther this year from runner-up Tabb.  Smithfield advanced 9 wrestlers into the finals with six champions at the end of the evening and all 13 of the entrants qualifying for the 4A-South Regionals to be held this Friday and Saturday at Hanover High School.

While the leadership of the team comes from a great group of senior and junior wrestlers this season, the strength of the squad lies in the depth of our sophomore class from 132-182 weight classes in which all but one of these wrestlers came out of youth wrestling and stuck with the sport. The team really pulled it together this weekend and the coaches are very proud of their performance, especially with qualifying every wrestler to Regions for a second season in a row.

Team Scores:
1. 217.00 - Smithfield
2. 177.50 - Tabb
3. 168.00 - Powhatan
4. 106.00 - Grafton
5. 103.00 - Jamestown

Joe Wendland (126, Sr., 16-11) had to withdraw from the tournament due to a season-long back injury.  Joe had elected not to participate on senior night earlier in the week to rest for Conferences.  However, the morning of Conferences, the hard decision was made to medically withdraw Joe from the tournament.

John Swartz (132, So., 32-14) won his quarter-finals match against Braxton Fell (Grafton) by a first period fall to advance to the finals.  In the first of the two back-to-back electric finals matches of the evening that came down to the final seconds, John was unable to finish the cradle and lost a close 7-9 decision to Zach Andrews (Tabb) to take 2nd place.

Preston Jones (138, So., 17-15) defeated Devon Williams (Tabb) with a quick first period fall to face David Mathews (Jamestown) in the quarter-finals where he lost a close 7-11 decision.  In the consolation finals, Preston lost to Seth Jordan (Powhatan) by a second period fall to finish in 4th place in one of the most competitive weight classes in the conference.

Taylor Machart (182, So., 12-11) won his quarter-final match to Patrick Garner (Grafton) by forfeit to advance to the finals against Christian Payne (Tabb).  Taylor, in his first year in the sport, secured a second period fall to become Smithfield’s fourth champion of the evening.

Keanu Carr (195, Sr., 31-11), the team’s only competing senior, advanced to the finals to John Reid (Powhatan) where to won the match by injury default to become the Smithfield’s fifth conference champion.

TJ Pope (220, Jr., 20-13) lost a very close 1-2 decision in the quarter-finals to Hunter Baker (Tabb) to then face Logan Scott (Grafton) in the consolation finals.  TJ quickly pinned Scott to finish in 3rd place.

Ross Manfred (285, Jr., 36-3) advanced to the finals to face Robbie Wiscarson (Tabb) where he easily secured a fall in the second period to become Smithfield’s sixth and final champion of the evening.  Ross’ win at Conferences also brings his career wins record to a team best with 92.

The team will continue to 4A-South Regionals which will be held at Hanover High School on 13-14 Feb.  Wrestling begins at 2pm on Friday and noon on Saturday.  We look forward to seeing all our alumni and fans in the stands as the guys work to qualify for States.

2013-2014 Season:
Post-Season

Conference 19:  Champions

Region 4A-South:  3rd Place

4A States:  3rd Place

States Overview:  Senior Jordon Garlow Wins 170lb State Championship!

The VHSL 4A State Wrestling Championships marked a number of new school records for Smithfield wrestling, which was capped by the school’s first state champion.  Jordon Garlow defeated his Sherando opponent in the 170lb weight class championships with a pin in the first period, finishing his season 49-5 and becoming the program’s first state champion.  Jordon has already signed to wrestler for the Coker College Cobras in the fall.

Preparing for this year’s tournament was much more difficult than in the past due to Virginia’s switch to the new six classification system and the additional of so many new teams that we hadn’t seen in the past.   The 4A classification is one the biggest changes in the new system since it is comprised of a mixture of former AAA and AA schools.  Throughout the year, we did our best to attend events where we could see more of the former AAA teams that are in the new 4A-South Region, which helped a lot for the Regional Tournament.

Despite the new challenges, we brought six wrestlers to the tournament and we were able to advance an amazing four of the six wrestlers to the championship finals, also a new school record.  The staff was excited to see all three of the seniors make the finals to finish their high school careers.   The four state finalists for Smithfield were: Carter Page (152, Sr.), Jordon Garlow (170, Sr.), Nick Kennedy (220, Sr.) and Ross Manfred (285, So.)  Also entering the tournament and placing were a pair of freshman, Stan Smeltzer (138) and Tyler Sharon (145).

This was also the first time Smithfield was in the hunt for the State Team Title.  Following the first round, Smithfield was leading the tournament.  Throughout most of Friday’s competition, Smithfield largely remained in a second place with a tight 5-6 point separation between the top four teams.  With two thirds of the team in the finals, our pair of freshman did a great job advancing up in the placements rounds for Saturday afternoon and keeping us in the hunt.  Late in the finals round we were trailing Eastern View in 4th place; however, Jordon’s win by fall at 170 moved us just ahead of them to ultimately place a new school record of third overall in team points.

Individual Results:

At 138, Stan Smeltzer (9) won by decision over Eastern View, then lost by decision to the tournament champion from Fauquier and William Fleming.  The medal round, Stan lost a tight 4-5 decision to the senior from Woodrow Wilson to take 6th place.  Stan finishes his freshman season with an amazing 42-17 record and has all eyes on a return to States next season.

At 145, Tyler Sharon (9) lost by a technical fall to the Eastern View runner-up and Loudoun County.  Tyler quickly rebounded to pin the senior from Churchland in the second period to secure 7th place.  Tyler finishes his freshman season with a 31-24 record and is also planning a return trip to States next season.

At 152, Carter Page (12) won by decision over Fauquier to then defeat the #1 Northern Region seed from Woodgrove in the semi-finals by a major decision to setup a rematch of the 4A-South Regional Championship for the 152lb state finals against Hanover.  Our plan for the match was to stay on the offence all three periods in which he did, however his opponent was able to overcome our adjustments to edge him again.  Carter finished in second place and capped and outstanding high school wrestling career as a x3 state qualifier and x2 state place winner.  Carter plans to attend Arizona State University in the fall.

At 170, Jordon Garlow (12) won by major decision over Millbrook and then pinned his King George opponent in the semi-finals to setup a 170lb state final against the #1 Northern Region seed wrestler from Sherando.  Going into the match we didn’t know a lot about the Sherando wrestler other than his record was 46-1.  The plan was to open with a collar tie and wrist to see how he reacted.  In the tie, Jordon felt his opponent lower his level and push setting up his signature feet-to-back pin.  The moment they hit the mat, we knew Jordon had him; it was just locked so tight and three seconds later the referee called the fall at 1:13 in first period.  The entire Smithfield team and fans jumped to their feet as Jordon became the school’s first state champion, also finishing his high school career as a x2 state qualifier and x2 state place winner.  Jordon will wrestle for Coker College in the fall.

At 220, Nick Kennedy (12) quickly pinned his first opponent from Amherst County and then won by technical fall over Sherando to setup a rematch of the 4A-South Regional Championship for the 220lb state finals against Dinwiddie.  Our plan for the match to was to build on the success from Regionals and also remain on the offense.  Nick wrestled his heart out and controlled the entire match, but a controversial stalling call changed the momentum forcing Nick to score an escape which ended in a scramble and takedown in the last few seconds losing a very close 4-5 decision.  Nick finished in second place and also capped and outstanding high school wrestling career as a x3 state qualifier and x3 state place winner.  Nick is also an accomplished academic student with over a 4.0 GPA and is still finalizing his selection from a number of acceptances from universities for the fall.

At 285, Ross Manfred (10) opened the tournament with an upset over the #2 Northern Region seed by a close 4-3 decision over Amherst County to setup a rematch of the 4A-South Regional Championship for his semi-finals match against Lake Taylor.  Ross had lost a close 0-4 decision the previous week, but the coaches were confident Ross could edge him and we trained all week to close the gaps.  This time, in the second period Ross was able to secure wrist control from the top position and drove the Lake Taylor wrestler directly over his head to stack him for a pin to advance to the 285lb championship finals.  Quite frankly, Ross’ pin was once of the most memorable moments the tournament.  Not only was it just one of those moves you rarely ever see the big heavyweights get, but the look on his face that he had just made the finals was priceless – it’s in those moments that just reaffirms why we love to coach.  In the finals, Ross lost a close 0-2 decision to the #1 Northern Region seed wrestler and senior from John Handley.  Ross finishes his sophomore season with an outstanding 40-6 record and plans on a returning next season to capture the state championship title.

On behalf of all the wrestlers and coaches on the Smithfield High School wrestling team, we would like to thank the parents, school, and the fans for all your support this season.

At 170, Jordon Garlow (12) won by a first period falls over Churchland and Midlothian to advance to the semi-finals, where he won by a decision over Woodrow Wilson to advance to the finals.  Jordon lost by fall in the finals to Glen Allen to place 2nd overall and secure his second trip to States.

At 182, Cole Manfred (10) lost his first match by another close decision to Deep Creek and was eliminated from the tournament.

At 195, Keanu Carr (11) continued a great first year with a 3-1 decision over Woodrow Wilson, then losing by a third period fall to the finalist from Hanover.  Keanu went to win his first consolation match by technical fall over Powhatan and then lost by a second period fall to Midlothian and a very close 7-9 decision to Nansemond River to place 6th overall.

At 220, Nick Kennedy (12) pinned his way through the bracket again with first period falls over Woodrow Wilson, Caroline, and Deep Creek to face a much awaited match against Dinwiddie in the finals.  Nick defeated his Dinwiddie opponent by an 8-5 decision in which he controlled the entire match becoming Smithfield lone Regional Champion and earning his third trip to Salem!

At 285, Ross Manfred (10) won by a falls over Booker T. Washington and Heritage, advancing to the semi-finals where lost by a close 0-4 decision to the champion from Lake Taylor.  Ross won his first consolation match by a second period fall over Churchland to advance to the consolation finals where he earned a hard fought 3-1 decision over Glen Allen to take 3rd place and secure his trip to States after narrowly missing out last season.

2012-2013 Season:
Post-Season
5th Place Bay Rivers District
4th Place Regional I
10th Place AA States

States Overview:  A special congrats to all our state qualifiers, we set a school record in points, team placement, and number of medalists this year!  Smithfield finished in 10th place, scoring 47.00 points with 4 of our 5 qualifiers placing Top 8 at States.

At 126, Zach Bruke (11) lost both his matches to tough first and second round opponents, but being his first year making varsity had an excellent run to the State tournament.  Zack will be a strong anchor is the lighter weights next season!

At 138, Carter Page (11) had a tough quarter-final match against 4-time state champion Joey Dance (Christiansburg) and then wrestled back to a 5th place finish with a 3-2 victory over Loudoun County.  We look to see Cater move up a weight class or two next season.

At 160, Jordan Garlow (11) dropped his first match 19-7 against Rockbridge to wrestle back to 8th place.  Jordan's 10-4 win over Skyline's Tyler Ritter is proof that anyone can win on any given day!  His strong finish to the year made all the tough work this season much sweeter in the end!

At 182, Nick Kennedy (11) lost 5-3 his quarter-finals match to a controversial takedown in the last 9 seconds, but then immediately rebounded for a win by fall in his next match against Northside.  Nick lost his consolation quarter-final match to Powhatan (who will be in our new conference next season) and then easily defeated Trent Graham (Poquoson) for 7th place.

At 195, Chuck Sharon (12) pinned his way to the finals again to challenge 3-time finalist Zach Roseberry of Brentsville District.  Chuck wrestled a great match nearly scoring the first takedown, but came up just short of being Smithfield's first state champion in a 7-3 loss to Roseberry.   Chuck had a great season ending up 38-1 overall and will continue his wrestling career at Campbellsville University!

----------------

February 9, 2013

Regionals Overview:  Smithfield had an absolute reversal of our District performance last weekend.  The guys really stepped up their performance in the tough matches and 7 of the 8 regional qualifiers placed in the top 6.  The guys overcame the two biggest shortfalls from Districts with their match management and closing the 3rd period.

At 126, Zach Bruke (11) lost his first match to the Regional Champion and then pinned his way back into the consolation finals to edge Tabb 4-2 in a close match that was managed very well.  Zach has had one of the biggest improvements on the team this season and we look forward to another strong performance at States.

At 132, Ben Jones (9) also lost his first match and wrestled back to the consolation semi-finals, losing a close 3-0 match to Culpepper, and taking 5th place to qualify as an alternate to States.  As a freshman, Ben will continue to improve and is on pace to be a State qualifier next season.

At 138, Carter Page (11) pinned and tech falled his way into the finals to for a re-match with BC Laprade.  Carter wrestled a solid match dropping a 9-4 decision, however closing the gap by half to 5 points from their District final match.  Carter's solid post season performance has entered him into Smithfield's 100 career win club.

At 160, Jordan Garlow (11) dropped his semi-final match to York, then rebounding to pin his way to 3rd place.  Of note, Jordan pinned previous Smithfield youth wrestler and Georgia state placewinner, Zach Edmonds in consolation semi-final to go States.  Jordan is now 2 victories away from reaching the 100 win club.

At 170, Matt Walker (12) lost two extremely close matches that prevented him from qualifying for States.  He lost his semi-final match 1-0 to the Regional Champion from Poquoson, and then lost in overtime 3-1 to New Kent on a controversial call that even the entire Regional's crowd where on their feet in disagreement.  Matt went on to finish 6th overall to close out his high school career.  After the school year Matt will be leaving for Marine Corps.

At 182, Nick Kennedy (11) pinned his way to the finals and then revenged his loss to Poquoson in the finals 6-3 to become the Regional Champion!  Nick had worked all week on his break down to control the top, as well as specific conditioning to improve his 3rd period performance which all paid huge dividends.  Nick's solid performance in the post season also has entered him into 100 win club.

At 195, Chuck Sharon (12) also pinned his way to the finals to defend his regional title in a 5-1 victory over Chancellor.  Despite injuring his hand in practice earlier in the week, with help our trainer Liz, some rest, and mental determination he prevailed again to repeat as the Regional Champion and preserving his undefeated record this season!

At 285, Ross Manfred (9) remains relatively new to the sport of wrestling and dropped both of matches and did not place in the tournament.  Being a freshman, Ross still has a many seasons to come at Smithfield and is on pace to be a State qualifier next season.

Smithfield Takes 17th at 2012 States

February 18, 2012

Congratulations to SHS's 3 medal winners:
Chuck Sharon, 4th - 195lbs
Bryan Graham, 8th - 120lbs
Nick Kennedy, 8th - 170lbs

(Note: Chris Kennedy was in a position to place at States until he suffered a broken ankle. Instead of injury defaulting from the tournament (as a senior), he demanded his ankle be taped and he finished both his matches. Chris' actions exemplified the heart of a true competitor and team captain - a trait the coaching staff seeks in all our wrestlers!)

3 Wrestlers Place in Richmond

November 29, 2008

The Smithfield High School wrestling team has finished it's first tournament this weekend in Richmond. Overall, Coach Wiatt said the team did extremely well and numerous wrestlers excelled. Three wrestlers placed and several others were close to the medal rounds.

Marshall Robinson (135lbs) and Ryan Milbourn (140lbs) made it to the finals and both placed second, while Matt Graham placed third.

Congrats to everyone for a strong performance.
