Ivy wins in Lisle

Hot and sunny weather blessed the Lisle Astros annual baseball tournament over the weekend.
The three-day tournament included ten teams from the league and was dedicated in memory of Bud Anderson of Lisle who died last week. The Astros held a moment of silence before their Saturday game in honour of the former player and coach.
The Ivy Leafs won the championship after an 11-6 decision over the Bolton Dodgers. The consolation game featured the Clearview Orioles and Orangeville AIRFX. Clearview won the contest 8-3.

Astros host annual tournament

The Lisle Astros Baseball Club released the schedule today for their annual baseball tournament over the Victoria Day weekend (May 19-21).
The three-day tournament includes 10 teams - Angus Black Sox, Bolton Brewers, Bolton Dodgers, Clearview Orioles, Creemore Braves, Ivy Leafs, Orangeville AIRFX, Orillia Majors, Orillia Minors juniors and the host Astros.
Action begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Bolton Dodgers and Creemore Braves. Game two at 11 a.m. has the Bolton Brewers taking on the Clearview Orioles followed by Angus Black Sox and Ivy Leafs at 1 p.m. The Orillia Minors plays the Lisle Astros at 3 p.m. and the day finishes with the Orillia Majors and Orangeville AIRFX at 5 p.m.
Sunday's play starts at 9 a.m. with four games and another four games on the holiday Monday including the consolation championship at 1 p.m. and the championship at 3:30 p.m.

Lisle makes it to Quarterfinals

The Lisle Astros made it to the quarterfinals of the 'C' classification provincial championship tournament before losing 5-1 to Thorold Mariners. The tournament began Friday afternoon and finishes up with the finals today (Monday).
Lisle got of to a rocky start with a 3-1 loss to the London Barons Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday morning the team met South London taking the game by a score of 11-6 advancing them to meet Tillsonburg at 4:30 p.m. The game was dampened by thunderstorms and serve lightening, which halted the play twice. The final time, the umpires suspended the game with Lisle down in the score during the bottom of the sixth.
The game was resumed Sunday morning and Lisle eventually beat Tillsonburg 10-7.
Lisle moved into the quarterfinal match to meet Thorold and suffered their second loss 5-1, which eliminated them from the tournament. |
Provincials for Lisle

The Lisle Astros will be heading to Port Lambton Friday for the start of Ontario Provincials. The Astros will take part in the 'C' classification tournament.
Their first game is Friday at 4:30 p.m. against the London Barons.
A win will have them playing at 2 p.m. with a loss they will play at 9 a.m on Saturday. Their opponents would either be London Stingrays or Leamington.
Twelve teams are participating in the three day event.

Lisle does well at OBA

The Lisle Astros were in Port Lambton over the weekend for the 'D' Ontario Championships. Lisle made it to the semifinals before losing to host Port Lambton 12-2.
Lisle's first game was suppose to be against London Sting Rays, but that team dropped out at the last minute, granting Lisle a 7-0 default win. Lisle went on to defeat Leamington with a 5-3 decision, but surrendered a loss to Woodslee 15-1.
Game four was played against a local team, Midland Indians, with Lisle winning the contest 3-2, which put Midland out of tournament play. Lisle then faced another local team, Bolton 'B' Braves, outscoring them 13-0, which eliminated the Braves.
Lisle received a bye in the quarterfinals to grant them a game against Port Lambton in the semis but suffered a 12-2 loss.

D' OBA Schedule Released

The Lisle Astros will be attending the Ontario baseball Association Playoffs over the Labour Day Weekend in Port Lambton.
The schedule was released last week with Lisle meeting London Sting Rays for their first game Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. Win or lose, Lisle will play their next game at 2:00 p.m.
In addition to Lisle, 18 other teams will be competing for the 'D' title including two North Dufferin teams - Midland Indians and Bolton 'B' Braves.

Victoria Day Weekend Tournament Approaches

The Lisle Astros Baseball Club will be holding their annual tournament over the Victoria Day Weekend May 22 and 23.
It will once again be a two-day tournament with eight North Dufferin League teams taking part. Five games will be played on Saturday with another five on Sunday. The Consolation and Championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
A license beer garden and food booth will be on site at the Ross Houston Memorial Park.

The Lisle Astros Baseball Club has released the 2009 Annual Victoria Day Weekend Tournament Schedule.
Eight North Dufferin League teams will participate in a two day tournament on May 16 and 17. Five games will be played Saturday and another five on Sunday. The championship final is scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m.
A licensed beer garden and food booth will be on the grounds at the Ross Houston Memorial Park during the weekend.

North Dufferin Teams Fail to Capture Provincial Ball Championships

Over the Labour Day Weekend six North Dufferin Baseball League teams took part in the Ontario Baseball Association Playoff tournaments held across Ontario. Three tournaments were held with two senior teams from the league playing in each the 'B', 'C', and 'D' classifications.
In the 'B' category, the New Lowell Knights and Clearview Orioles traveled to Kendal. Both teams lost their first two games, which knocked them out of the tournament. Clearview played Kendal in their first game and lost by a score of 3-1. Their second game ended when Chatham defeated them 5-1. New Lowell played Whitby in their first game and lost with a 4-2 score. They also played the strong Chatham team in the third round after receiving a second round bye and lost 5-1.
The Creemore Braves and Barrie Red Sox 'A' attended the 'C' category tournament, which was held in Tillsonburg. Barrie played five games throughout the weekend, defeating Wyoming 8-1, Tillsonburg 5-4 and West Niagara 7-6. Barrie lost to Exeter 7-2 and Creemore 2-0. Creemore made it to the semi-finals winning games against Fort Erie 10-3, Woodslee 5-2, West Niagara 4-3 and Barrie 2-0. Their first loss was to Exeter in the third game 11-2 and their second was again to Exeter when the two teams met in the semi-finals. Exeter won by a score of 5-1.
The 'D' category tournament was located in Wallaceburg where the Bolton Braves and Lisle Astros traveled to participate. Lisle went down to defeat in their first two games played, one against St. Catherines 5-3 and the other to Mitchell 4-2. Bolton lost their first game to the Thorold Mariners 7-5 but remained in the tournament defeating the Thorold Fantoms 11-7, Mitchell 8-1, Essex 8-2 and Thorold Mariners 10-5. In the semi-finals, Bolton lost to Forest 4-2, which eliminated them from the tournament.

East Stars Victorious in All-Star Game

The Annual All-Star Game of the North Dufferin Baseball League was held yesterday (Sunday) with the East Division Stars winning the contest 3-2 over the West Division Stars.
The nine inning game was held at the Ross Houston Memorial Park in Lisle.
The East Stars were able to score three runs when Mike Wallace (Bolton), Michael Gemmiti (Bolton Jr.), and Steve Warden (Bolton) crossed the plate in the first inning. The West pitchers held the East for the remainder of the game.
The West Stars had difficultly in their first at bats. East Pitcher Mark Obee (Orillia) allowed only two hits in his three innings pitched. In the fifth inning, the West managed to score two runs off Lucas Sharpe (Barrie 'B'), when Brett Elliott (Ivy) and Devan Caldwell (Mansfield Jr.) plated runs. John McNabb (Barrie 'A') and Bryan Anderson (Midland) shared the pitching duty for the remainder of the game, which limited the West.
The League's All-Star Most Valuable Players were both pitchers this year. For the East Division, Obee was awarded the honour and Brandon Norrie (New Lowell) received the honour for the West Division.
Teams on the East Stars included: Aurora, Barrie 'A', Barrie 'B', Barrie Juniors, Bolton, Bolton Juniors, Midland, and Orillia. The West Stars were made up of players from Angus, Clearview, Creemore, Ivy, Lisle, Mansfield, Mansfield Juniors, and New Lowell.

All-Star Game Sunday

The crack of the bat will be heard this Sunday at the Ross Houston Memorial Park, Lisle, when the North Dufferin Baseball League's All-Star Game gets underway at 2 p.m.
The annual nine inning contest will pit the best of the East Division against the best of the West Division.
Players selected for the event were released by the N.D.B.L. last week and can be viewed on their site at, www.ndbl.ca (click on the All-Star icon on their website).
During and after the game there will be a food booth and beer garden on the grounds.
The Lisle Astros will also be hosting a Home Run Derby immediately following the game.

Lisle Off to O.B.A.'s

The Bolton Brewers and Lisle Astros took to the ball diamond yesterday in Bolton to decide who would represent the North Dufferin Baseball League at Ontario Baseball Association 'D' play-offs on the September Long Weekend.
Bolton and Lisle played the conclusion of the game from last Sunday, when during the classification tournament thunderstorms moved into the area disrupting the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with Lisle leading 8-6.
Yesterday's game lasted all but ten minutes as Lisle obtained the two outs they needed to end the inning and the game. The final score was 8-6. The win created the need for a second game as the Brewers received their first loss in a double-loss elimination tournament. That game was played right after the conclusion of the first.
The second game lasted the usual seven innings with Lisle outscoring the Brewers 5-1 to send them to the Provincials. The Astros will head to Wallaceburg for the 'D' tournament on the Labour Day Weekend.
The other two elimination tournaments for the 'B' and 'C' classification were decided on the weekend with New Lowell winning the 'B' and Creemore the 'C'.

North Dufferin Teams O.B.A. Bound

This past weekend (June 13-15) senior teams in the North Dufferin Baseball League participated in elimination tournaments for Ontario Baseball Association (O.B.A.) play-offs on the Labour Day Weekend. All senior teams, except for Mansfield were involved in one of the three tournaments.
The New Lowell Knights, Clearview Orioles, Orillia Majors and Ivy Leafs were at New Lowell Recreation Park for the 'B' classification tournament. The first game was between Clearview and Orillia with Clearview winning 10-9. New Lowell and Ivy took to the diamond with Ivy downing New Lowell 7-6.
New Lowell and Orillia then squared off to decide who would remain and who would be eliminated; the Majors lost 1-0. Clearview and Ivy played game four Saturday afternoon where the Orioles defeated the Leafs 2-1.
Sunday morning, New Lowell and Ivy battled to decide who would play Clearview in the finals. The Knights defeated the Leafs 6-1, sending New Lowell to face the undefeated Clearview team. The Knights ended up beating the Orioles 10-0, which forced a sudden death game to determine the winner. In that game, New Lowell was able to score four runs in their half of the seventh and held off the Orioles for a 4-0 win. New Lowell will be off to Kendal during the Labour Day Weekend for the O.B.A. play-offs.
In the 'C' classification tournament, the Creemore Braves, Barrie Red Sox 'A', and the Aurora Jays played off at Creemore's Gowan Memorial Park. Creemore and Barrie met in game one with Creemore defeating Barrie 3-1. Creemore then played Aurora, which ended with another victory for the Braves as they beat the Jays 6-5.
Barrie and Aurora met in game three where the Red Sox pounded the Jays 7-1 to eliminate Aurora from the tournament and face Creemore in the finals. Creemore and Barrie took to the diamond Sunday morning where the Braves won with a 5-2 decision over the Red Sox. Creemore will head to Tillsonburg to vie for the 'C' championship.
The Angus Black Sox, Barrie Red Sox 'B', Bolton Brewers, Lisle Astros and Midland Indians participated in the 'D' elimination tournament hosted by Midland at Tiffin Park. Midland and Angus played a Friday night game with the Indians winning 4-1 over the Black Sox. Barrie and Lisle played Saturday morning where Lisle handily defeated Barrie with a 5-0 decision.
Angus and Barrie met later Saturday where Angus was victorious with a close 4-3 game against Barrie, which eliminated them from play. Bolton, who received a bye at the start of the tournament faced Lisle in their first game which ended in a 6-0 score for the Brewers. Lisle played their third game of the day against Angus where the Astros trounced the Black Sox 11-1.
Both Midland and Bolton played back-to-back games Sunday morning with Bolton beating Midland by scores of 7-2 and 4-3, placing Bolton in the final with a 2-0 record against Lisle's 2-1 record. The final game got underway at 4 p.m. with a close fought game that resulted in extra innings. However, bad weather quickly moved in and the game was suspended in the bottom of the ninth inning with Lisle leading 8-6 and Bolton at bat.
The conclusion of the game will be played Thursday night in Bolton at 7:30 p.m., and if Lisle wins, they will force a second deciding game immediately after. The O.B.A. 'D' tournament will be held in Wallaceburg again this year during the Labour Day Weekend.
While all winners of their respective divisions will attend the O.B.A. play-off tournaments in the fall, the runners-up may also be eligible to attend if the schedule permits.

Lisle Astros' Victoria Day Weekend Tournament Schedule

The Lisle Astros Baseball Club released their 2007 Annual Victoria Day Weekend Tournament Schedule today.
The event will take place over the May holiday weekend, May 19, 20 and 21. A total of 12 teams will complete in the tournament which begins at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Six games will be played on Saturday, another six on Sunday and four on the holiday Monday.
On site at the Ross Houston Memorial Park, will be a beer garden and a food booth which will run for the entire weekend. Admission of $2.00 will be charged at the gate.

Kids move to new heights
April 4, 2007
A very serious safety hazard was created on Monday night at the Ross Houston Memorial Park in Lisle, when two picnic tables were placed on the roof of two buildings.
One picnic table was placed on one of the dugouts and another on top of Anderson Pavilion. The roof on the dugout is reasonably flat, but the main concern was the table placed on the pavilion, as the roof is steel and steep. The height of the building from the ground to the edge is 9 feet. While the table was placed on the peak and supported by the roof vents, it provided a serious safety concern.
This is the first time such a bizarre incident has occurred at the park. No suspects have been named, but it seems local teenagers may be responsible.
The incident occurred between 6 o'clock Monday afternoon and 7 o'clock Tuesday morning. The Township of Adjala-Tosorontio were notified, however they did not respond until a second call was placed and after the table on the pavilion fell from strong winds this morning. The other table had not been removed as of this afternoon. |
Anderson makes presentation to Township Council

Scott Anderson, a member of the Lisle Astros Baseball Club made a presentation to the Adjala-Tosorontio Township Council on Monday March 12.
Anderson stressed the importance and history of both the Lisle Astros and baseball in the community, but also provided information regarding the league in which the Lisle team plays in - the North Dufferin Baseball League.
Anderson indicated his pleasure to speak to Council and to residents to inform them "of the great sport of baseball, which is being played in Lisle and surrounding communities".
While mentioning the long history of baseball in the community of Lisle, Anderson, also noted that the Anderson Family has always had a member on the team except for two years. "[B]aseball for the Anderson Family is heritage", he said, "in fact over the 54 years of baseball in Lisle, there are only 2 years where an Anderson has not played".
The reason for the public deputation to Council was in regards to the Facility Rental Agreement the team must complete to use the Ross Houston Memorial Park, a Township owned park.
Two questions were asked to Council in regards to the agreement and liability. Deputy Mayor Doug Little, who was chairing the meeting, asked staff to answer the questions. Barb Kane, Clerk for the Township explained that when the park is booked, the ball club is liable for any person who enters the park and their actions. Director of Public Works, Eric Wargel then stated that this is an insurance issue, and that Council should not be speaking about this in public.
Anderson, is distressed by this issue as the ball club books the park for the entire day for a game in the evening. "We are liable for the entire day, even if we are not there," he said. "If someone falls off the swings and it is not even related to baseball, we are liable."
While the issue was discussed briefly, full understanding of this policy is still unknown.
The Astros had also requested approval for a licensed beer gardens for their upcoming tournament on the May holiday weekend; Council approved the request, as long as the paperwork is submitted by May 11, 2007. |
Lisle will hold All-Star Game

The Lisle Astros Baseball Team will have the honour of holding the North Dufferin Baseball League's All-Star Game on Sunday July 8 at 2:00 p.m.
Every year the North Dufferin League's best plays in a North-South Affair. Full details have not been released at this time and player selections will not be made until a League Meeting on June 27.
The Lisle Astros are extremely proud to have this opportunity to hold the event and planning has already begun.
The first All-Star Game was held in 1963 and has been played continuously, except for a few years when it was decided that there would be no game scheduled. |
