Hilo Titan Breaks Course Record

            Cross-Country running among youth continues to grow and has attracted interest from a wide range of athletes.  On October 11, Kamehameha Middle School hosted an exciting Cross-Country meet, which featured enthusiastic middle and elementary school runners, along with talented harriers that will be making their presence known in future BIIF races.

          Despite warm and muggy conditions, athletes established personal best times and a meet record was broken.  Hilo Intermediate Steven Chung continued his dominance and set the pace for the rest of the field.  Chung broke the nine minute barrier in his first meet a couple weeks ago, and in his second meet thus far crossed the finish line uncontested in a blistering record breaking time of 8:43.10 for the challenging mile and a half course.  Chung commented, “This course was hilly and tough.  You really need to keep your concentration.  But my goal of beating my personal record (8:51) kept me going.”

         While Hilo Intermediate’s Chung took the individual crown, HPA Middle School claimed another first place team honors.  HPA’s top five boys claimed spots among the top 15 with Sikhea Jim leading the way, and was Chung’s closest competitor, in a time of 8:56.01.  Other key contributors were Chris Chock, Brendan Moynahan, Toby Balaam, and Hayden Virtue rounded off HPA’s top five boys.  Waikoloa Middle claimed second and was led by Kainoa Raymond, and Sunrise Athletics Club led by the duo of Adrian Larkspur and Magnus Namohala-Roloos took third with a tie breaker over Hilo Intermediate.

          HPA’s Emi Higgins continued her winning streak in taking home her second individual title in a time of 10:10.60 for the same distance.  Meanwhile, Hilo Intermediate was crowned the top team with Hilo’s Haley Miyasato finishing fourth, and Jamime Chun, Keiko Mills, an Ella Kosch also placing in the top ten overall.  Jennifer Kamimura was Hilo’s fifth runner in helping the team capture the team title over second place Sunrise Athletics Club (led by Ella Johnson) and third place Kamehameha Middle School (led by Nevaeh Fukui-Stoos).

          The next Middle and Elementary Cross-Country meet will be hosted by Sunrise Athletics Club on October 19 with the girls race starting at 9:30am and the boys race to follow.

SUNRISE ATHLETICS MAKES A STRONG FIRST IMPRESSION

"Over the river and through the woods", was the Sunrise Athletics first experience at a Cross-Country course that was well hosted by Kamehameha Middle School on October 5, 2013.  The Sunrise Athletics team, consisting of elementary and middle school runners in grades 3-8, had to trample through muddy conditions to make claim to completing their first true cross-country course.  At some point during the girls race, they were also blessed with

Sunrise Athletics athletes represented their team well by running with heart and determination, as for many of them this was their first time in a sport that is known to be a challenge of "mind over matter"!
