BROOKVILLE — Nick Brennen still hasn’t lost this season and once again, nobody scored against him either.

The Sykesville Senators left-hander tossed a four-hitter and struck out six with three walks and two hit batters in the Senators’ 5-0 win over the Brookville Grays in the opening game of their Federation League best-of-7 semifinal series at McKinley Field Tuesday night.

Brennen improved his mound record to 4-0 this year while lowering his already microscopic earned run average to 0.18 over 38 innings.

Back in June, Brennen blanked the Grays with a one-hitter in a six-inning outing with 10 strikeouts. Sykesville, which needed four games to put away Denny’s Pub in their best-of-5 first round series, won its fourth straight game over the Grays after dropping the first two matchups of the season.

This time around, the Senators scored all the runs they needed in the first inning after two outs. Adam Fox doubled and the Grays followed by intentionally walking slugger Kasey Clinton.

Grays starter Glenn Stewart walked Brennen then uncorked a wild pitch to allow Fox to score from third. Jon Weber delivered a two-out single to put the Senators up 2-0.

In the second, Sykesville plated an unearned run, then added two more in the fifth inning when Jared Baummer tripled and scored on Jordan Weinzerl’s single. Fox pushed home Weinzerl with a sacrifice fly to close the scoring.

The Grays loaded the bases win the first but stranded them all. Ivan Wortman doubled with one out in the third and was left at third base. The Grays also stranded two runners in the fourth inning.

Wortman had two of the Grays’ hits. Jed Fiscus singled twice for the only other hits.

DuBOIS — The scoreboard at Showers’ Field looked like someone’s failed attempt at writing computer code with zeros far outweighing ones but it worked out well for the DuBois Rockets as they picked up a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Rossiter in their Federation League semifinal series Wednesday.

The victory for the Rockets evens their best-of-seven series at 1-1 with Game 3 this evening in Rossiter.

The Rockets’ Thomas Summers did the heavy lifting as he not only drove home the tying run in the sixth but then came through with the game-winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the 10th off Rossiter reliever Peyton Graham.

Meanwhile, after allowing a run to the Miners in the opening inning, Rockets’ hurler TJ Gornati eased through the next nine innings scattering a total of eight hits while walking none and striking out eight to pick up the complete-game victory.

Senators Blank Grays

BROOKVILLE — One night after Nick Brennen’s gem, the Senators got a two-hitter from another left-hander Jack Herzing in a 2-0 win over the Brookville Grays at McKinley Field Wednesday night.

Herzing allowed a two-out single to Ivan Wortman in the first inning and an infield single to Max Lane with two outs in the fifth. He wound up striking out 12 while walking two and hitting a batter.

Like Tuesday’s win where the Senators scored all the runs they needed in a 5-0 win, both of Wednesday’s runs came in the first inning thanks to four straight singles with one out. Quiggle, Adam Fox, Kasey Clinton and Jon Weber singled. Weber’s wound up plating both runs.

Quiggle scored on the initial play with Fox getting awarded home after being obstructed by Grays third baseman Kent Shick as he rounded third on his way to home.

From there, Grays starter Kane McCall threw shutout ball, allowing only four more singles. He struck out two while walking one and hitting two batters.

The Grays, meanwhile, saw their scoreless inning streak rise to 14 straight innings. Dating back to their 11-inning win over DuBois in the regular-season finale, they’ve scored just two runs over the last 22 innings.

Chris Calliari drew a walk off Herzing to start the first inning, went to second on a passed ball, but was throw out trying to steal third. He reached on a fielder’s choice in the third and got to second on a balk by Herzing, but was stranded.

Calliari also reached in the sixth when he struck out but got to first on a wild pitch. Quiggle’s throw to first to try to nail Calliari sailed into right field and allowed him to race to third, but two strikeouts and a groundout ended the inning.

Sykesville Wins Federation League Title

Sykesville has owned the Federation League postseason in recent years, and the Senators captured their four straight league crown Thursday with a 9-6 victory over Rossiter at Shaffer Field to win the championship series 4-1.

The Senators had their “lucky charm” in Dan Wascovich on the mound to start the game, and the move by manager Paul Roman paid off. Wascovich has started the championship series clinching game each of the last four years, picking up the win in three of those game — including Thursday.

The only title-deciding game Wascovich didn’t get the “W” in was last year when he lasted 3 1/3 innings in Game 5 against the DuBois Rockets — a contest Sykesville eventually won 6-5 in nine innings for their third straight crown.

Wascovich tossed four innings Thursday, allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks. Rossiter actually led 5-4 after four innings, but Wascovich found himself in line for the win when his offense scored twice in the top of the fifth to put the Senators up 6-5.

The middle of the Sykesville lineup did a vast majority of the damage Thursday. Clean-up hitter Kasey Clinton led that attack as he went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a run scored. Clinton’s big game was part of an even bigger effort that earned him championship series MVP honors.

Adam Fox went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in front of Clinton, while Nick Brennen was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs hitting in the No. 5 spot.
