WEEK OF 11-9 RESULTS/STATS

KATS WIN STATE!!!!!

Columbia Falls sweeps Corvallis for first title in 10 years

·         MIKE SCHERTING mscherting@billingsgazette.com

Top of Form

Bottom of Form

BOZEMAN — Over the summer, when Samantha Collins would look ahead to the upcoming volleyball season, she wouldn’t dwell on the uncertainties.

There was a new head coach, even though Jessy Matthews was an assistant for three years and familiar with the program. Several key seniors had graduated from last year’s Class A runner-up team. And Collins would be the only senior.

One thing Collins knew was a certainty: that she and her Columbia Falls teammates would be standing on the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse floor, crowned state champions.

“I had 100 percent faith in my team that we were going to be here today,” Collins said after the Wildkats took that crown with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-15 win over Corvallis in Saturday’s state championship match.

“A hundred percent. There was not one doubt in my mind that we weren’t going to be here and we weren’t going to take the trophy.”

The Wildkats did it with a strong presence at the net. Corvallis has four players standing 6 feet or taller and a setter at 5-11, so getting anything by them is a tall task. Not much got by the Wildkats, who received 10 kills from the 6-1 Morgan Stenger and eight kills from the 6-0 Kiara Burlage.

Columbia Falls also had 13 blocks: five from Burlage and four from the 6-foot KJ Schweikert.

It was Stenger who put down the championship-clinching kill.

Matthews, the first-year coach who prepped at Loyola Sacred Heart, echoed Collins’ sentiments that this year could be special. They proved it so by winning the school’s first volleyball title since 1996.

“A lot of people were like, ‘oh, man, you lost some great seniors last year,’ and we’re going, ‘yeah, of course we’re going to miss them. They were huge for us,’" Matthews recounted. “But we could also look and go, ‘yeah, but look who we’ve got coming up.’"

Corvallis and Columbia Falls had split two matches during the regular season before Columbia Falls won six of seven sets played at the state tournament.

The Blue Devils needed five sets — and a 16-14 win in the fifth, at that — to get past Butte Central on Saturday morning in the third-place match.

Corvallis coach Kasey Arceniega said the emotional win might have hindered her team’s start against Columbia Falls. In the end, she said, the Wildkats just played too strong.

“Hitting against height and playing against height is just tough, it’s tough,” said Arceniega, who guided the Blue Devils to the 2013 championship. “But the girls gave it their all in that Butte Central game. It was just hard for us to get the ball rolling in this game.”

Maroons fall in five sets to Columbia Falls

BOZEMAN — Butte Central couldn’t clear the tree line with enough shots and therefore lost a grueling five-setter to Columbia Falls Friday night in the winners’ bracket semifinal of the state Class A high school volleyball tournament.
The scores were 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 14-25, 15-13. The Maroons are not done, yet. They will play a loser-out match at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Corvallis, which ousted Billings Central in the late Friday night loser-out match. Butte Central will take an 18-4 mark into the match. It is 1-3 against Corvallis. The Maroons swept the Blue Devils earlier in the season. The most recent meeting was a five-game contest Corvallis won in last week’s Western A SuperDivisional tournament. The Butte Central-Corvallis winner will meet Columbia Falls at 1 p.m. for the state championship in the tournament being played at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on the Montana State University campus.
The loser of the Butte Central-Corvallis match will take home the third-place trophy. If Butte Central or Corvallis goes on to defeat Columbia Falls, a second title match will be played at 3 p.m. to determine the champion under the rules of the true double-elimination format.
The loser of the late Friday set-to will place fourth in the tourney being held at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on the Montana State University campus.
“That was tough,” BC head coach Becky Hancock said after the Friday evening loss. “The girls gave every ounce of everything they had out there. Little things add up and when you play volleyball, you will make mistakes.
“Those little mistakes add up and can hurt you. The mistakes made us play catch-up. The girls fought to the very end. It is hard to swallow to come up two points short, especially to get into the championship game, the chipper.”
A towering Columbia Falls front line made it even more difficult for a Butte Central team that has not been on the short end of too many height disparities this season. However, the Wildkats presented a row of 6-foot-1 Morgan Stenger, 6-0 K.J. Schweikert, 6-0 Kiara Burlage, 5-11 Cydney Finberg and 5-10 Kaitlyn Casazza. They’re all juniors. The only senior on the team is 5-8 Samantha Collins.
The Maroons found too many of their kill shots deflected or touched enough to slow down the spikes, allowing for the Columbia Falls offense to scramble into playmaking mode. The 11 blocks on the stat sheet attested for Wildkat points scored on defense, but didn’t begin to tell the difference made by interrupting the BC cadence, or rhythm of pass-set-hit.
“Their height outweighed our height,” Hancock said. “Next time, we will know their block a lot better and will know how to hit through it.
“I think we matched their blocks, though, with our digs. I think they’re beatable.”
The Maroons defeated Columbia Falls in four sets last weekend at the Western A SuperDivisional on the way to second place in the tournament.
The play in the match was top-notch by both teams. While the Wildkats used their height superbly to keep much from getting past the front row and register pounding kills, BC’s quickness allowed for it to cover the floor and come up with some seemingly impossible digs and saves.
The tiebreaker was duel with neither able to grab more than a two-point edge until Casazza clobbered a kill for an 11-8 advantage. Butte Central never caught up again. A block by Burlage brought match point at 14-11. A tip by 5-10 Sierra Pica and a kill by 5-9 Corbyn Holm staved off defeat until Burlage powered a kill to the opposite field, ending the match.
Butte Central trailed by five points twice in the first game, the last at 11-6 after a stuff block by Stenger. The Maroons worked their way back in small increments, before pulling even at 19-all on tip by Holm. The BC girls didn’t pull ahead until gaining set point, 24-23, on a kill by 5-8 Teresa Piazzola. A Wildkat shot then sailed wide to end the set as Butte Central pulled out the win at the end.
The storyline was opposite in the second set. The Maroons led early, by as much as six points, twice. The last was at 15-9 following a kill by 5-10 Ryan Trudnowski. However, Columbia Falls worked back and tied the score at 20-all on a block by Burlage. The teams traded point points much of the rest of the way until a BC serve traveled too far, putting the Wildkats up at set point, 24-23. Finberg then smashed the next shot to end the set, tying the match score at a game apiece.
Columbia Falls came from behind again in the third game. Butte Central was ahead 7-4 after a Wildkat’s serving error. However, Columbia Falls caught up and the teams played pretty evenly. The Wildkats took the lead for good at 11-10 on a tip by Schweikert. They worked at securing it with more margin and reached set point at 24-19 when a Maroon’s shot tangled in the net. Collins then fired an ace and the Wildkats owned a 2-1 lead in the match.
The BC girls were not done. They took a side-out and the first point of the fourth set when a Columbia Falls serve missed staying inbounds. Piazzola then served four straight points, one being an ace the other three kills by Holm. The Wildkats were unable to dig out of the early 5-0 hole. The gap reached 10 points, 16-6, during a six-point run Mollie Peoples served that included three Columbia Falls hitting errors and a carry violation. Trudnowski scored the other two points on a tip and a hard kill. The Maroons were ahead 22-9 after a block by 5-10 Lacey McGree. Another Wildkat hitting error brought on set point at 24-12. McGree finished off the set two serves later with a kill.
Piazzola served three aces and Holm notched 16 kills to lead the BC performance. Pica, McGree and Holm each put two blocks, Peoples dug up 23 shots and Emily St. John set 46 assists. Piazzola also had 14 kills. Taylor Wahl had 15 digs and St. John 14 as the team totaled 85.
“It’s not over. Everything is possible. That’s what I told the girls,” Hancock said. “We have a chance to play three more volleyball matches.

BOZEMAN — At one point during a crucial stretch in her team’s first-round match at the Class A state volleyball tournament, Columbia Falls coach Jessy Matthews called timeout.

She didn’t have kind words for her team, which at the time was tied 1-1 in sets with Billings Central and was close to dropping another. In fact, Matthews said, she called them ‘quitters.’

“Nobody wants to be called a quitter,” senior Samantha Collins said. “And so it definitely starts the fire for us.”

The Wildkats proved their coach wrong by rallying from a 20-10 deficit in the third set. Columbia Falls won the set 28-26, and then went on to win the match, a victory that sent them into Thursday’s second round at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

Columbia Falls, last year’s Class A runnerup, graduated several players. Returnees Anna Nicosia, Keavyn Baker and Cydney Finberg all had older sisters that graduated, so there was plenty of fuel when the season began for the Wildkats to take another run at the title.

“Every one of our upperclassmen were here last year, and so they remember that feeling,” said Matthews, who is in her first season as head coach after serving as freshman coach for the past three. “They’ve just used that as motivation throughout the year to really get them going.”

HAVRE – Senior quarterback Dane Warp passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Havre Blue Ponies defeated Columbia Falls 47-13 Saturday in the second round of the Class A playoffs.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Ponies of head coach Mark Samson. Warp was the catalyst. He threw two TD passes to Nate Rismon and another to Jase Stokes.

Jazz Schroeder scored on a short run and Parker Filius returned a kickoff 85 yards for another touchdown for Havre, 8-2 on the season. The Ponies will be in Dillon next Saturday for a semifinal clash with the two-time defending state champion Beaverhead County Beavers.

“Our team played pretty darn good in every part of the game,” said Samson. “Jase Stokes had a great game on defense and Dane Warp played exceptionally well again. He’s really doing some great things. Nate Rismon played great and Parker Filius had that tremendous kickoff return.

“Really everywhere you looked our kids played very well.”

The Havre defense produced six turnovers, five fumble recoveries and an interception.

“We’re getting better,” said Samson. “And we’ve got a lot of young kids playing well.”

The Ponies will be tested by the unbeaten Beavers.

“If you’re going to be the best,” said Samson, “you’ve better start by beating the best. We’re looking forward to the game.”

Columbia Falls slips by Polson in playoff opener

COLUMBIA FALLS — One of the smallest guys on the field came up with the biggest play.

Wyatt Green, a speedy and shifty 5-foot-8, 175-pound junior running back, returned a kickoff 90 yards to set up the game-winning touchdown for Columbia Falls in Saturday’s 9-6 Class A playoff football victory over Northwestern A rival Polson.

Polson (3-6) took a 6-3 lead on Tanner Wilson’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Hudson Smith, who outjumped a Wildcat defender in the back corner of the end zone, in the third quarter.

Green immediately followed with his game-breaker and Columbia Falls quarterback Dakota Bridwell scored on the next play, bulling his way into the end zone for the touchdown.

Those points came 20 seconds after Polson had scored.

“Huge,” Columbia Falls coach Jaxon Schweikert said of the return.

“What a way to answer. We answered right back.”

Schweikert said it was the third time Green has almost taken a kickoff the full distance. All three of those, he said, have been inside the 5-yard line.

Columbia Falls (5-3) and Polson were limited offensively by a steady rain, which lasted the entire game.

Bridwell was held to 60 yards passing on eight completions in 18 attempts. Polson quarterback Tanner Wilson was 4 of 15 passing for 19 yards.

“As the game goes on, the field conditions got muddier and muddier, and it was harder to throw the ball,” Polson coach Scott Wilson said.

“Not being able to run the ball consistently put us in a lot of second- and third-and-long situations.”

Bridwell suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter, which didn’t help matters for the Wildcats offense.

“He couldn’t push off and throw the ball,” Schweikert said.

It also limited his running.

“He’s a great short-yardage runner,” Schweikert said.

Columbia Falls rolled up 274 yards on the ground in 46 attempts. Polson was limited to 85 yards on 28 carries.

Green led the ground game with 129 yards on 32 rushes.

Colton Cote rushed nine times for 55 yards and set up Polson’s lone score when he ripped off a 41-yarder to put the Pirates in position at the Columbia Falls 26.

“Our defense was outstanding,” Schweikert said.

“Polson has run the ball on everybody they have played this year. Cote is a great lead back. Those guys (Cote and Wilson) are really good. It’s difficult to defend those guys. But our guys, our D-line and our linebackers were just outstanding, coming down hill and attacking.”

The game featured a bizarre play, a scary one for the host team if you may since it was Halloween, when Columbia Falls’ Tristan Steinwand picked up a punt by Polson, which had been touched by a Polson player, and ran 45-plus yards the wrong way to the Polson end zone.

Steinwand dropped the ball, a Polson player jumped on it and the Pirates thought they scored a touchdown.

“I’ve coached a long time, never seen a kid pick up the ball and run the wrong way,” Schweikert said.

“They (officials) were blowing whistles all over the place. Half the kids stopped.”

Schweikert said Steinwand “was just playing hard and he just got lost in the moment.”

“I have never seen anything like that in my 20-plus years of coaching,” Wilson added.

“A strange play ... it caught everybody off guard.

“It was tough, both coaches screaming at (the officials to plead their case).

“It didn’t affect the football game,” Wilson added.

“They won the battle up front.”

And that was the difference.

“We were relentless today,” Schweikert said defensively.

“We blew it the heck up. They didn’t have any chance to get the momentum.”

The victory advances Columbia Falls to quarterfinal play on Saturday at Havre (7-2). The Blue Ponies, the Central Division champions, had a first-round bye.

In the day’s other games, Sidney scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Belgrade and reserve a game on the other side of the state against Whitefish.

It was the fourth straight victory at the Kalispell Classic for Flathead.

Both the defending state champions of Flathead and the Glacier Wolfpack finished with 175.5 points.

The tournament title was decided by the number of first-place winners, with the Braves topping the Wolfpack in that category 6-5.
