Golden Eagles win baseball semifinalAfter jumping out to 6-0 lead, Clovis West prevails behind Karch.Published online on Wednesday, May. 27, 2009Clovis West High hung a six-spot on Clovis in the first inning, then was silenced by Zach Coy. Golden Eagles pitcher Sean Silva had his pitching arm drilled by an Evan Wolf line drive in the second. The Cougars scored four in the sixth. Then the second-seeded Golden Eagles, in outright survival mode, turned to a junior who was sixth on the staff in innings pitched. And Eric Karch came through, recording outs with five of the final six batters he faced as Clovis West repelled Clovis 6-4 Wednesday night in a Central Section Division I semifinal before a standing-room-only crowd of about 2,000 at Stan Bledsoe Field.
"We jumped on them early and it was a good thing because Coy got in a nice rhythm toward the end of the game," Eagles coach Kevin Patrick said. "I'll be honest, we really swung the bats well in our last game [in a 9-0 quarterfinal win over Central], and we've been swinging well in practice. All year, we kind of felt it would just be a matter of time and, hopefully, we're getting hot at the right time." J.D. Salles, really, has never cooled. And it's the Eagles' Fresno State-bound senior who will remain at home to oppose defending champion Stockdale (25-5) Friday in the D-I title game. Clovis West is seeking only its second title in school history. The first occurred in 2004. "I'm ready, I've been waiting a long time for this one," Salles said. The starting time hasn't been determined, but there's no question who gets the ball from Patrick. Said the coach: "I wouldn't want anybody else out there." His father, Clovis coach James Patrick, likewise, had to feel pretty good about sending senior left-hander Coy out to the mound Wednesday night. Coy arrived with an 11-2 record, but never had he experienced an inning like the first. But he was struck by misfortune. Following leadoff walk to Salles, a strikeout and a flyout, Coy appeared to escape when Jared Lee hit a routine grounder toward second baseman Dalton Dupree. But the ball took a bad hop and sailed over his right shoulder, scoring Salles. In no time, it was 6-0 Eagles as Silva doubled off the right-center field wall to drive in a run, Karch singled in another, Tommy Rowan singled, Connor Williams singled and No. 9-hitting Joe Smith drove in the final two with a single. The following inning, Silva (11-2) had his forearm purpled by the shot from Wolf.
Karch, who only 151/3 innings in his back pocket, entered and gave up a bases-loaded walk to Jordan Yost and a two-run single to Cody White, before calming himself. |
Eagles fly into big baseball week Published online on Tuesday, May. 12, 2009 |
Clovis West's pitching depth in baseball is unmatched in the section, and that's a particularly good thing this week. Not only will the 25-3 Golden Eagles - ranked second in the section and No. 5 in the state - play the section's No. 3 Clovis twice while attempting to remain at least tied for first place with Buchanan atop the Tri-River Athletic Conference, they will oppose De La Salle-Concord on Saturday at Oakland's McAfee Coliseum. That one against the Spartans, who represent the most distinguished athletic program in Northern California, will be played at 1 p.m. as part of the three-game Dave Stewart Classic. So deep is Clovis West's pitching staff, coach Kevin Patrick will start Sean Silva (9-1, 1.50 ERA) and J.D. Salles (7-2, 2.15) today and Friday against the Cougars, and still have no fewer than three quality starters available for De La Salle, which is 13-8 overall and leads the East Bay League at 9-3. One of Patrick's options is Jared Lee, a 6-foot-5 right-hander recruited to UNLV as a pitcher. And he's thrown only 20 innings this season. Tonight, at Clovis, Silva will be matched by Cougars senior left-hander Zach Coy (9-2, 1.55). Silva, who's also hitting .375 with 32 runs and 23 RBIs in one of the section's most powerful all-around seasons, beat Coy 4-1 behind Salles' three-run triple six weeks ago. |
Clovis West bests Bears in TRACGolden Eagles make it a three-way tie in league.Friday, Apr. 24, 2009When it was over and Clovis West High had played Buchanan for the final time in the baseball regular season, Golden Eagles pitcher J.D. Salles issued a final challenge. "I hope we see them again," Salles said. "I hope we get to meet them in the playoffs. These games are so intense, they bring out the best in us." Friday was no exception. Clovis West's Sean Silva and John Koretoff each hit three-run home runs and Salles worked in and out of danger on the mound as the top-ranked Golden Eagles (22-3 overall), playing at home, avoided a regular-season sweep and beat the No. 2 Bears 7-3. Clovis West pulled into a three-way tie for first in the ultra-competitive Tri-River Athletic Conference with Buchanan (18-4-1) and Clovis (20-4), all at 7-2 in the TRAC with six games left. "That's a little painful that we're tied now," said Buchanan coach Tom Donald, whose ballclub had a one-game lead over Clovis West and Clovis entering Friday. "But there are plenty of games to be played. League wasn't won by a game tonight." It just felt like so much was on the line Friday, with the stands at Clovis West at near capacity for this bout between the Central Section's top teams. The teams were also coming off an emotional game Tuesday in which Seth Batty hit a walkoff grand slam that lifted Buchanan to a 4-3 win against Clovis West. The Golden Eagles came out focused Friday with revenge, first place and no sweep all on their minds. Clovis West scored a run in the first inning then built a 4-0 lead through two innings after Silva smashed his three-run homer off Buchanan pitcher Chris Rodgers. But Buchanan wasn't about to wait until the seventh inning again to show offensive life, reducing Clovis West's lead to 4-3 after a solo home run from cleanup hitter Brett Bishop off Salles in the top of the fifth. Bishop stood still and stared at his monster shot over the left-field wall then glanced at the mound to give Salles a quick look before touching home. Salles started the bottom half of the fifth with a single. "I was swinging for the fences," Salles said. "Wanted to start something myself." Instead, it was teammate Koretoff who supplied the power stroke. After No. 3 hitter Jared Lee was hit by a pitch, Koretoff launched his three-run homer. |
TRAC baseball: It's in a league by itselfThursday, Apr. 23, 2009If the Central Section baseball season ended today, players and coaches from Bullard, El Diamante and Stockdale highs might be seen at jewelers, sizing up rings for league championships in the County/Metro Athletic Conference and the West Yosemite and Southwest Yosemite leagues.Representing programs with tradition, they know what quality baseball is all about. And, for that reason, they can only look across the street and applaud the Tri-River Athletic Conference. Consider: The Knights, Miners and Mustangs are a combined 1-12 against the TRAC; 46-7 against the rest of the field. "Whether we want to believe it or not down here, they've set the bar pretty high, and it's been that way for a long time," El Diamante coach Bert Flores says. Depth of talent, particularly on the mound, has elevated the TRAC to another level in a year it has No. 3 Clovis West, No. 11 Buchanan and No. 17 Clovis in Cal-Hi Sports' state top 20. No one can better testify to this than El Diamante, which, in the Coca Cola Baseball Classic, was outscored 31-3 in losses to TRAC representatives Buchanan, Madera, Clovis West and Clovis. Further, the Miners -- three-time section champions and once a runners-up at the D-II and D-III levels the past four years -- were no-hit by Buchanan's Ryan Anderson and Clovis West's J.D. Salles, and one-hit by Clovis' Evan Wolf. And those pitchers have been second-best on their staffs this season to Seth Moranda, Sean Silva and Zach Coy, respectively. Madera's Haden Hinkle, a three-year force, was the other TRAC pitcher El Diamante opposed in the tournament. "That was a murderers' row of pitching," Flores says, "but it's helped us since then." Those four games aside, the Miners are 17-1 and averaging 7.2 runs per game. Flores and others familiar with TRAC baseball list additional attributes that separate the league from the pack: - Position player depth. - Teammate chemistry, often developed since seventh grade, if not sooner. - College-class facilities, particularly at Clovis Unified schools, that help ensure a student with baseball talent on campus is playing the sport. - Advanced coaching from the top to a deep well of assistants with college and professional backgrounds. One of these is Bryan Marsoobian, a Fresno-area businessman and former Hoover and Fresno State player lured by coach Tom Donald to Buchanan's staff this year. Marsoobian talks about the way it was and the way it is: "The TRAC is what the old NYL was in the '70s and '80s, except better. These kids now train year-round, they know how to lift weights, and they know how to eat right. They have taken hitting and pitching lessons for years, so fundamentally and physically, they are better players today." He, too, emphasized depth: "Back in the day, if you had two or three good players on your team, you had a chance to win league. Now, in the TRAC, almost your entire roster can play the game and play it well." Meaning, pressure is applied for seven innings, making for TRAC classics. One of those played out Tuesday, at Buchanan, where Clovis West's 7-0 Sean Silva sailed into the seventh inning with a three-hitter and 3-0 lead. But the Bears loaded the bases with the bottom of their order before receiving a walk-off grand slam from leadoff hitter Seth Batty. The section's No. 1 Golden Eagles and No. 2 Bears will play again today at Clovis West at 6:30 p.m. "The TRAC has such great competitive balance," Clovis West coach Kevin Patrick says. "You have to bring your A game every day for seven innings. There are certainly no gimmies." His father, Clovis coach James Patrick -- with a 492-151 record (.765) and six section titles in 22 years with the Cougars -- was instrumental in developing a standard that others would follow in the TRAC. He says the league is at the top of its game, and he says this while allowing that it has had more major league draft and college prospects in the past: "The quality of play is better because the kids are dedicated, know the game, make routine plays, pitchers throw strikes and they are well coached. There are just a large number of players focused on baseball." A school best-ever 25-7 record last year got coach Jeff Prieto a TRAC second-place tie and a D-I heart-ripping, 11-10 semifinal loss to Clovis. He's now assisting at UNLV, where it hasn't taken him long to draw this conclusion: "I have been recruiting in Arizona, Texas, Nevada and California, and I haven't seen a conference, top to bottom, as strong as the TRAC." |
J.D. Salles: State Boys Athlete of the Week April 18, 2009 3:19 AM
Our second spring boys' honoree comes from a part of California's Central Valley where baseball is real big; and from a family that has the game in its blood. It takes more than one player to be the top team in your section and No. 5 overall in the most recent CalHiSports.com state baseball rankings.
"They recruited him as an athlete off his last year's performances,” said Clovis West Coach Kevin Patrick, a 1995 graduate of nearby Clovis High, and current PE teacher at Clovis West, who played at Fresno City College and then two years at Cal before returning to the Fresno area and assisting at his alma mater. He then coached successfully as the skipper at Reedley and Madera before coming to Clovis West last season. "They're going to give J.D. a chance to do both, pitch and play the infield,” continued Patrick, who confirmed last year's numbers for Salles as being 13-0 with a 0.80 ERA on the mound and .420 as his average with bat-in-hand. For his efforts last season, Salles was named to the CalHiSports all-state underclass team. Last week in the Fresno High Easter Classic, Salles was named the Most Valuable Player after leading Clovis West to the tournament championship that culminated in a 4-1 victory over Clovis East of Clovis. J.D. was 7-for-17 from the leadoff spot, with seven runs scored, four RBI, two doubles and two steals.
|
April 15, 2009 Clovis West High School baseball coach Kevin Patrick knew he had a lot of pitching talent going into the season. He just didn't know the school, located in Fresno, Calif., was on its way to becoming No-Hitter High.
The three pitchers who threw no-hitters – Salles, Sean Silva, and Jared Lee – are Division I prospects. (Salles has signed with Fresno State, and Lee will play for UNLV. Silva has not decided on a school.) Moreover, since none of the pitchers played football last fall, the entire pitching staff was able to work during the offseason and fall ball on mechanics with pitching coach Shawn Hannah, a former pitcher with the Detroit Tigers. The team's remarkable run started Feb. 27 on the first day of the season with Silva on the mound during the second game of a doubleheader against Rocklin Academy. Salles said teammates didn't mention the potential no-hitter to the pitcher, as tradition dictates. Then when the last pitch crossed the plate, Salles said, "Everybody just ran to the mound. [Silva] was excited. He doesn't show much emotion, but he showed a smile for that one." It didn't take long for Clovis West's pitchers to strike again. The next game was on March 3, the first game of the Coca-Cola Baseball Classic Tournament, and Aaron Garabedian, a senior making his first varsity appearance, was pitching against Beyer High School. As the game reached the late innings, Salles said players once again tried to avoid broaching the subject with the pitcher, but they did discuss it with each other. "People were talking about this one in the sixth inning, because two in a row was pretty shocking, and Aaron was excited too," Salles said. After the game, Salles said, "He was excited. He ran off the mound and pumped his fist. We ran out there and attacked him pretty much." Salles' no-hitter came later in the tournament during a 14-0 drubbing of El Diamante High School. He said he tried to stay focused on throwing strikes, though as the game progressed he was aware what was happening. Lee, playing right field, saved the no-hitter with a diving catch in the sixth inning. Patrick said it wasn't surprising that Salles would have a chance to throw his own no-hitter. "J.D. has the 'stuff' to be very effective every time he toes the rubber," he wrote via email. "With him, if he struggles it's usually in the early innings, but he had it working all day." Asked about the key to all of this pitching success, Patrick credited Hannah and the pitching staff but said other factors also contribute. "In order to throw a no-hitter, everything has to be working – stuff and location, defense and sometimes a little luck," he wrote. |
Clovis West, Clovis East battle in a rematch game. Wednesday, Apr. 08, 2009By Andy Boogaard / The Fresno BeeIt took dad 20 minutes Wednesday night to do son a favor and set up a rematch between defending champion Clovis East and top-ranked Clovis West in tonight's title game of the 40th Fresno Easter Baseball Classic. Clovis East (10-9), in an improbable run to the 6 p.m. championship at Clovis West, rode the pitching of Clay Gartner, William Rosado and Nick Armenta to defeat Garces 7-0 and Memorial 6-0, closing the tournament's regular phase with a 4-0 record and securing a final berth by 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Timberwolves, who are 0-5 in the Tri-River Athletic Conference a year after they graduated Bee All-Stars Matt Jensen, Cody Kendall and Chris Kuber in a school-record 25-7 season, were a lock to make the Classic final because they had given up a total of only three runs in the tournament -- the first tie-breaker used if needed. Fifteen minutes later, in the tournament's final game Wednesday, host Clovis and Rocklin met with 3-0 records. However, Rocklin had given up two runs and Clovis 13 in the tournament, meaning the Cougars -- coached by James Patrick -- had no chance of making the final, but they could assist Clovis West -- coached by his son, Kevin Patrick. The 17-2 Eagles went 4-0 while giving up six runs in the tournament. But for Clovis West to make the championship, Clovis had to win or score at least five runs in a loss to Rocklin. "I've never rooted for the Cougars in my life, but I'm about to," Eagles right-hander J.D. Salles said after beating Pleasant Grove 3-1 on a five-hitter in a game that ended 30 minutes before the Rocklin- Clovis game. And the Cougars removed all drama in a hurry in that one by scoring five runs in 20 minutes of the first inning in a game it would win 6-1 behind Zach Coy's three-hitter. Clovis' 4-0 record in traditionally one of the state's top tournaments was particularly impressive considering the fifth-ranked Cougars (17-3) swept without their most powerful player, pitcher/first baseman Evan Wolf. Headed to UC Davis, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound right-hander won't be able to pitch for two weeks and hit for four weeks because of a broken bone in his left hand. But the pitching picture for James Patrick received a considerable boost earlier Wednesday when junior left-hander Aaron Ray beat Yosemite 2-0 with a four-hitter and 16 strikeouts. Clovis West, meanwhile, is healthy, on top of its game and ready to fire Sean Silva at the Timberwolves. The senior left-hander is 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 35 innings. While Silva is interchangeable with Salles as the Eagles' ace, Clovis East first-year coach Rigo Ledezma has already used top starters Jeff Owen, Gartner and Rosado in the Classic. Late Wednesday, he said he'll oppose Clovis West with either sophomore Ryan Crew (1-0, 18 innings pitched), sophomore Michael Page (0-1, eight IP) or sophomore Josh Long (0-1, four IP). |
Clovis West outlasts rival to win titleThursday, Apr. 09, 2009Six innings into the Fresno Easter Baseball Classic championship game, Clovis East's unexpected run was still rolling strong. Facing off against Clovis West in a rematch of the 2008 Classic title game, the defending champ Timberwolves kept it close until the wheels wobbled and fell off in the seventh. Connor Williams blooped a single to left field and the Golden Eagles took advantage of two final-inning errors to claim the tournament crown 4-1 Thursday night.
"I was just trying to hit the ball into the outfield any way I could," Williams said smiling. "They kept throwing me away, and I finally got a piece of one and it fell in." Williams' hit to shallow left scored Jacob Alvarez, and when the ball was misplayed, Eric Karch also came home to break what was a 1-1 tie. While Williams' hit was key, Sean Silva's play proved critical as well. The tournament co-Most Outstanding Pitcher struck out four batters -- including the final batter of the night looking -- and pitched a four-hitter. He provided a bit of his own run support with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Silva is committed to Fresno State as a walk-on but has one scholarship offer in the bank from UC Santa Barbara and said he expects another from UC Davis. If he continues to play as well as he did Thursday night, more might be rolling in. He came into the contest with a 1.15 ERA in 35 innings, coach Kevin Patrick said. He said Silva's performance was no surprise, and added that the Golden Eagles' pitching and defense have been constants that have led to an 18-2 record. While Clovis West used the tournament to get bench players more experience and have fun while sharpening itself for the resumption of Tri-River Athletic Conference play, Clovis East was seeking to turn its season around. Clovis East coach Rigo Ledezma said he thought his team did that. After losing seven straight games headed into the 40th annual tournament, the Timberwolves (10-10) reeled off four consecutive wins while allowing just three runs. Timberwolves pitcher and infielder Jeff Owen, who earned the other half of the co-Most Outstanding Pitcher award for his complete-game two-hit, nine-strikeout performance earlier in the tournament, said the Timberwolves "came out a completely different team" and expects his team to move forward positively. Clovis West's J.D. Salles was named co-MVP of the tournament after going 7 for 17 with two doubles, four RBIs and six runs. Cody Keefer of Davis High was the other co-MVP. |

BALLS, BATS AND BUZZ
Ask Andrew Rich, the multiposition standout from Washington, who the Central Section's best pitcher is and he doesn't hesitate: "Sean Silva." Yet, interestingly, Rich has what Clovis West's Silva doesn't -- a college scholarship. Rich, who has played years of summer travel ball with Silva, will extend his baseball career at UC Davis. Silva is a recruited walk-on at Fresno State and has also been offered a scholarship at UC Santa Barbara. But the left-hander who has touched 89 mph on the radar gun has seemingly widened the window of college opportunity by going 5-0 with two saves, a 1.20 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 35 innings for the top-ranked Golden Eagles. "He is proving that he is a scholarship player," Eagles coach Kevin Patrick says. "He certainly is pitching like he has a chip on his shoulder."
