Amended Rule

March 28, 2014

Runner On First, Ball Is Hit...

First base runner is in a force situation---this means that the second baseman needs only to have control of the ball and contact with the base for the "force out".

If the second baseman is not on the base but more in a fielding position for a tag, when a fielding player is in a force-out situation and is in a tagging mode the base runner has the following options.

Move towards the next base... they can slow and even stop with the fielding player having to move towards the runner to make the tag.

If the base runner makes a retreating (backwards motion) they can be called out IMMEDIATELY by the umpire which then gives the fielding player the opportunity to throw to first for the attempted double.  When this occurs, the umpire should call "OUT" audibly/loudly so that all hear the outcome call (even though a physical tag has not transpired.)

This rule was changed a couple of years ago so not everyone is aware of it and when this situation results clarification is usually required.

Amended Rule

May 3, 2013

Tagging at Home is allowed as an alternate option

Ersla Has a Scoring Line

Scoring line is in effect to avoid collisions at home, the runner must be ahead of the defender, across the scoring line with their foot down, (as if they were making contact with a plate)and, if in the judgement of the umpire, the catcher had control of the ball and in contact with home plate and the runner has not yet touched the ground, an "Out" call would result.

Ersla Does Not have a commitment line

If a commitment line is not in play then the defending team also has the option of implementing a "tag" to effect the out. Tags are offen used when a ball is miss thrown, or the defending player (not always the catcher) has circumstances that lead to the defender having acquired control of the ball and relative field position in relation to the position of the runner.

Slopitch is not fastball, its rules are designed for recreational style players and consequently the safety of those participants. Hence rule variations to make things as safe as possible for participants (orange bag at first, pitcher being 50 ft from the plate)

So players should avoid collisions when ever possible.

Amended Rule

May 28, 2012

Any Walk Rule

Any walk to any player (four straight balls or not,guy girl) results in ONE BASE.

League General Information

E.R.S.L.A. was founded in 1982 by Glenn Jackson. Glenn organized 6 teams who got together and created a fun league for Hospitality Industry staff. Games were scheduled on Sunday afternoons as this was the day most industry staff does not work.

One of the original visions of fundraising efforts was to build a softball facility in the city of Edmonton. As the years progressed and real estate cost soared this goal seemed unattainable. In lieu of this, a tradition of charitable giving was started in 2001 to help less fortunate children in the Edmonton Area.If possible, the league tries to contribute to city charities every year.

The league is run by volunteers. The current ERSLA executive is as follows:

President/Treasurer - Joshua Moar
Past President - Les Accocella

Director -Tyler Watson

Director - Cliff Vacheresse

Director - Brian Clare

Director - Lee Hrycun

Director - Catherine Vachereese
