Sizz blows by Preferred Office, 42-11

Wow, what a way to start the season tonight with a blowout win over Preferred Office 42-11. Our kids brought what we had been working on in practice to the game and ran it to perfection. Our defense was awesome and our offense was getting layups on most trips down the floor. Let's see how it all went down tonight.

The opening quarter we came right out attacking Preferred with our smothering defense. Ashton Alston and Mason Adams were forcing the Preferred guards into bad passes and Ty Jones was picking them off and turning them into points at the other end of the floor. With two minutes gone in the game we had a 8-0 lead. After another Preferred turnover, Kobe Branham scored in the paint to make it a 10-0 lead. Preferred sank a couple of free throws but we came right back with a basket from Ashton to make it 12-2. Ty would score on a nice move in the lane and Ashton would knock down a free throw to make our lead 15-2 after one quarter of play.

The 2nd quarter our defense really kicked it into high gear. Jayden Brown would not let the Preferred guards get by him and he caused numerous turnovers. Trey Grant picked off several passes in the quarter and turned them into points for us. Trey was beating Preferred down the floor and they had no answer for him. At one point in the quarter he would score 8 straight points and our lead had grown to 25-2. Jayden would then score on a nice drive down the lane and Drew Buergler would knock down a short jumper. Trey then made another steal and drove in for another layup to extend our lead to 31-2 by the end of the quarter.

In the final two quarters we really called off the dogs in a big way. The boys club "mercy rule" was in effect the entire 3rd and 4th quarters as our lead never got below 20 points. Our kids continued to play good defense, despite staying behind the 3-point line. Preferred was able to knock down some shots to make the game a little more respectable. But on this night we could have scored 60 points if we had wanted to. Very proud of how our kids played tonight and the game would mercifully end with us notching a 42-11 win.

We were led in scoring by Trey Grant's 16 points. Ty Jones had a great game with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Kobe Branham battled hard in the paint and finished with 6 points and 5 rebounds in the game. Ashston Alston was awesome on defense and finished with 4 points and 2 boards. Jayden Brown was the leader of our defense and made life miserable on the Preferred guards. He finished with 2 points and a bunch of steals. Drew Buergler was our leading rebounder with 6 boards and finished with a single basket in the game. Jacob Teague, Mathew Rashidi, Mason Adams and Jonathan Short did not score in the game but they all played very good defense and helped us notch this big win tonight. We return to action on Saturday at 1pm. Please be at Goldtrap by 12:30pm.

 

 

Sizz defense leads way past Custom Awards, 26-18!

After cruising thru our first game last week, it sure was great to see how our kids would react in a close game situation. Custom Awards is very well coached and their kids are talented and play very hard. They have some very good guards and they caused us some trouble early in the game. We made some adjustments at half-time and the 3rd quarter we put the game away. Let's see how it all went down.

The opening quarter was very competitive. Both teams struggled to get much going on offense. Both teams played very tough defense. Custom got a couple of easy baskets on us using a backdoor play. We called timeout and quickly put a stop to it, but on offense we could not get in a rhythm. Ashton Alston scored a couple of baskets off nice passes from Kobe Branham to make the score tied at 4. After another Custom basket, Ty Jones would sink a free throw to pull us within 6-5 by the end of the quarter.

The 2nd quarter our defense really stepped up to another level and did not allow Custom Awards a single point in the quarter. But the problem was we did not score much ourself. Jayden Brown would knock down a couple of short jumpers to give us a 9-6 lead and that would be all the scoring in the 2nd quarter. This one had turned into a defensive battle to say the least.

At the half we made a couple of adjustments on offense and defense and it really seemed to get us going in the 3rd quarter. Our defense really shut down the passing lanes and made it very difficult for Custom Awards to run their offense. We would outscore them 11-2 in the quarter and really put this game away. Ty Jones would score 7 points in the quarter, while Ashton would knock down a couple of shots of his own. By the end of the quarter we had built a 20-8 lead. Our length and quickness created numerous turnovers that led to easy baskets for us on the other end of the floor. Trey and Jayden really locked down on their guards defensively and Custom had no answers.

The final quarter would see Custom make a mini run but it was too little too late. We would pull out the hard fought 26-18 win. We were led in scoring by Ty's 10 points. Right behind him was Ashton with 9 points. Jayden had a good game on both ends of the floor and finished with 6 points. Trey rounded out our scoring with a single point but he had 8 big rebounds. Kobe and Drew would do a great job on defense and on the glass. Kobe finished with 8 boards, while Drew would pull down 7 of his own. I'm very proud of how hard the kids played and it was great to see them pull out this tough win. Custom Awards will be one of the best teams at Evans this year, so this was a good test for us. Great job today guys!

We will not play another game until Monday, January 6th @ 7:30 versus National Family. We will practice on Monday the 15, 22nd and 29th @ 7pm. Hope you all have a very blessed Christmas!

 

 

Sizz Week 1 - Player of the Week - Trey Grant

 

Our player of the week for week 1 of the season is Trey Grant. Trey had a great game tonight versus Preferred Office. He finished with 16 points and had more steals then I could count. He was all over the place on defense and caused all sorts of problems for the Preferred Office guards. Trey really ran the floor well and was a real leader out there for us tonight. Trey is a great kid that you enjoy being around and coaching. Gonna be a fun year with him. Way to go Trey for being named player of the week, we are very proud of you!

 

 

 

Strong 2nd quarter leads Sizz past National Family, 36-22!

It took us a while to get going on Tuesday night. Not sure if it was the long Christmas break or what but we came out and played some pretty ugly basketball the opening quarter of this game. We got things rolling in the 2nd quarter and would cruise to a 14-point win over a good National Family team.

The 1st quarter we struggled to make many shots. Ty Jones would knock down a couple in the lane to give us a 4-0 lead. National Family's best player, Tyler Frederick was really causing us trouble atacking our zone. It really frustrated me because we had worked on how to stop him the night before in practice. The kids just didn't seem to be playing defense like they have been the first couple of games of the season. We called time-out to try and change some things but we still had trouble stopping him. Ashton Alston would sink a short jumper and Jacob Teague would hit a shot from the wing to make the score tied at 8 by the end of the quarter. 

The 2nd quarter, with Tyler on the bench we really stepped up our defensive pressure. Jayden Brown and Trey Grant were causing the National Family point guard all sorts of problems. For much of the quarter, Jayden and Trey ran lay-up drills and we were able to outscore them 15-0 in the quarter. Trey would score 8 in the quarter and Jayden would score our other 7 points. When National Family did get a shot off, Drew Buergler and Mathew Rashidi were there to snatch down the rebound. By the half we had built a 23-8 lead.

The 3rd quarter would be back and forth with both teams exchanging buckets. Trey had another good quarter with 6 points and 4 rebounds. Ashton and Jayden were finally stopping their penetration into our zone and they had to settle for jump shots most of the 3rd quarter. Heading into the final quarter we held a 29-16 lead.

The 4th quarter Ty got back in the scoring column with 3 points, while Ashton and Trey would both sink a basket. Jayden and Kobe were doing a good job cleaning up the boards. We were also using Kobe as our on the ball screener and he was the reason Ty and Ashton got free for a couple of their baskets. The game would end with us notching the 36-22 win. The win moves us to 3-0 on the season with our biggest game looming next Tuesday versus a very good Graduate Sales team. They are very well coached by Grant and David, so this one should be fun. See you all on Monday at practice.

 

 

 

 

Sizz Week 3 - Player of the Week - Ashton Alston

 

Our player of the week for week 2 of the season is Ashton Alston. He had a really good game against National Family on Tuesday night. Ashton finihsed with 4 points and 8 rebounds. But his defense at the top of our zone was huge in us getting this win. He really was a big reason we were able to slow down their best player in the 2nd half. Ashton is a really good kid and is fun to be around and coach. Great job Ashton, we are very proud of you!

 

 

 

 

 

Shot at buzzer rims out, Sizz falls 34-32

I've been coaching at the club for 20 years and over the years there are a handful of games that stick in my memory a while. This was one of those games. It was a battle against the two best teams in the league and man was it a lot of fun. It was one of those games that neither team deserved to lose. But in the end, Graduate Sales got a couple more rebounds and just one more basket than we did and that was the difference in this one.

The opening quarter saw both teams playing tough defense and struggling to get the ball in the hole. Trey Grant gave us an early 4-0 lead with a couple of baskets from the wing. Graduate was able to knock down a couple of shots from the wing and this one would be tied up at 6 by the end of the quarter. 

The 2nd quarter was back and forth the entire way. Graduate Sales has one of the best guards in the league in Kolton Kennon. He hurt us in the quarter with his ability to slice thru the lane. He would knock down three shots in the quarter. Ty Jones did a great job for us attacking the basket and got to the free throw line a couple of times. He hit 3 of 4 from the line to give us a 13-12 lead at the half. Jayden Brown's defense against the best big man in the league in David Sorg, was the reason we were able to stay in this game.

The entire 3rd & 4th quarter was a battle. We kept the lead for the entire 3rd quarter as both teams found scoring at a premium in this one. Baskets were hard to come by due to both teams playing very good defense. Trey was able to slice his way thru the defense to score 6 points in the quarter and give us a 20-19 lead heading into the last 6 minutes of the game. Our defense against David was awesome. Jayden and Kobe were outstanding guarding the paint for our club. Ashton Alston, Trey and Ty were really good guarding the perimeter and kept this one close.

The final quarter we kept the same stragety against David, but he was able to hurt is with a couple of big baskets off offensive rebounds. Graduate took their first lead of the game at 28-26 with 2 minutes left. After a missed basket on our end, Graduate scored inside to make it a 30-26 lead. A free throw on their next trip would give them a 31-26 lead with a minute left in the game. Trey Grant then knocked down a 3-pointer for us to pull us within 31-29. We were forced to foul Graduate and they would knock down a couple more free throws. Ty Jones then hit a long 3-pointer for us to pull us within 34-32 with 12 seconds left in the game. Graduate went to the line and missed the front end of the 1&1 and we got the rebound. We set up a triple screen for Ty who got off a good looking shot at the buzzer that rimmed out and Graduate had survived a late rally by our team. Wow, what a game.

I told the kids after the game that we could not be prouder of them and their effort in this one. They played their hearts out and gave us 110%. Very proud of them!  

 

 

 

Sizz Week 4 - Players of the Week - Jayden & Kobe

 

This week we couldn't select just one player of the week, because both of these guys did a great job in our game versus Graduate Sales and gave us a chance to pull off the win. Jayden and Kobe had the huge task of guarding one of the best players in the city, David Sorg. He had been averaging around 20 points a game and Jayden and Kobe held him to just 8 points in the game tonight. They both did an incredible job guarding David. I told them after the game that I couldn't have held him to just 8 points. We're very proud of both of these guys. They are both great kids to be around and coach. Awesome job you guys!

 

 

Sizz puts Dale Crampton "down for the count", 31-12!

Our defense was clicking tonight in this game. We forced Dale Crampton into so many turnovers and mistakes, I lost count. The result would be a very convincing 31-12 win by our kids. Let's see how it all went down.

The opening quarter we came out and attacked Dale Crampton on both ends of the floor. We were passing and cutting to the hole on offense as good as we have all season long. Our kids were setting on the ball screens all over the floor and it led to some easy baskets. Ty Jones would knock down three free throws in the quarter and a jump shot to give us a 5-4 lead. Ashton Alston would score on a couple of put backs off offensive rebounds to extend our lead to 9-5. Kobe Branham would grab an offensive rebound of his own and score to give us a 11-5 lead after one quarter of play. Let me mention a kid that does not score a lot but really does some good things for our team. Jacob Teague always plays very tough on defense and he sets screens for Ty and others on offense that lead to some of their baskets. He is a true team player. Great job Jacob!

The 2nd quarter our defense rose to a whole new level. Jayden Brown and Trey Grant made things tough on the Dale Crampton guards at the top of our zone. Trey got several easy layups off steals to extend our lead to 17-5. Drew Buergler and Mathew Rashidi was doing a good job in the paint guarding their man and Dale Crampton really had nowhere to pass the ball. We cut off all passing lanes and forced turnovers on most trips down the floor. Jayden would score three points in the quarter and Drew would score on a jump shot in the lane to extend our lead to 23-5 by the half. Trey had a couple of amazing passes in the quarter that made everyone in the gym say "wow!"

The final two quarter we made sure all the kids got to play plenty of minutes and we would coast to an easy 31-12 win. The win moves us to 4-1 on the season. We will return to action on Tuesday night, January 27th @ 7:30pm versus a very good Army Surplus team. This is the team that we scrimmage a lot in practice so it should be lots of fun! Sizz Week 5 - Player of the Week - Drew Buergler

 

Our player of the week for week 5 of the season is Drew Buergler. He had a really good game versus Dale Crampton on Tuesday night. Drew finished with 4 points and 6 rebounds in the game. I have really been challenging Drew to step up and be aggressive on the boards and he responded in a big way in this game. Drew is a very sharp kid and is a joy to be around and coach. Great job Drew, we are very proud of you!

 

 

 

Sizz "red-hot" shooting leads to big win over Army Surplus!

This was a game that we really needed to win to all but secure the #2 seed out of Goldtrap in the up-coming city tournament. Army Surplus is a very good team and they are well coached by Nick and James. Their kids play hard so we knew we were in for a dogfight in this one.

The opening quarter would be tight the entire 6 minutes. Both teams played solid defense in the quarter and points were tough to come by. Ty Jones would knock down a couple of shots in the quarter and Ashton Alston would score three points to give us an 8-6 lead after one quarter of play. Kobe Branham and Mason Adams did a good job on the glass in the quarter, holding Army to one shot most trips down the floor. Jacob Teague helped our cause with his hustle and defense on the wing.

The 2nd quarter we started to pull away. Trey Grant caught fire from the field, knocking down shots from all over the floor. Trey would rattle off 9 points in the quarter and Ty would score on a couple of drives to the hoop. Jayden Brown's defense at the top of our zone was awesome and he also grabbed down 5 rebounds in the 2nd quarter alone. Mathew Rashidi and Drew Buergler also played very good defense and we would outscore Army, 13-5 to take a 21-11 lead into the half-time break.

The 3rd quarter our defense was really good and Army found it tough to get off many good shots. Ashton, Trey and Jayden gave their guards all sorts of problems and it lead to numerous turnovers. Trey remained hot from the floor, knocking down a couple more shots from the wing. Drew would sink a 15-footer to extend our lead to 29-15 by the end of the quarter.

The final quarter would see Army close the gap some but just when they had pulled within 10 points, Trey once again stepped up and sank a long jumper to give us a 34-22 lead. Both teams exchanged a few baskets the rest of the way but Army would never get any closer than 10 points the rest of the game. We would cruise to the 39-26 win. The win moves us to 5-1 on the season and all alone in 2nd place in the league standings. We will return to practice next Monday at 7pm and play Optimist on Tuesday, Feb 3 @ 7:30pm.   

Sizz Week 6 - Player of the Week - Jacob Teague

Our player of the week for week 6 of the season is Jacob Teague. He did not score in the game versus Army Surplus but still did a lot of good things that helped us get a big win. Jacob had a couple of rebounds and really played good defense against one of Army's better shooters in the opening quarter of the game. Jacob was giving his all out there, as he was diving on the floor for loose balls and caused several turnovers. Jacob is a great kid and fun to coach. Great job Jacob, we are very proud of you!

Sizz defense sharp in win over Optimist, 34-9!

Early on it looked like we were in for a battle in this game. Optimist came out hitting a couple of shots and attacking our defense. But our defense would tighten down and hold them to only three points the final three quarters of the game. Let's see how it all went down.

The opening quarter both teams exchanged baskets for the first couple of minutes. Ty Jones was getting great screens from Jacob Teague and Kobe Branham, which freed him for a couple of easy baskets. Andrew Reeder responded with a couple of baskets for Optimist to tie the game at 4. Ashton Alston had a good quarter as he knocked down a couple of shots to give us a 8-4 lead. Kobe would then take a pass from Ty and make a great move to the hole to extend our lead to 10-4. After a basket by Optimist, Ty would score once again and Ashton would hit a free throw to give us a 13-6 lead by the end of the quarter.

I really challenged the 2nd quarter group to shut their offense down and to step up our defense. That's exactly what they did. Jayden Brown and Trey Grant forced turnovers on most trips down the floor. We had several nice fast breaks that lead to some easy baskets for Ashton and Trey. We would hold Optimist to only one basket the entire quarter, while our offense caught fire. Trey would knock down another jumoer and hit a couple of free throws to extend our lead to 27-8 by the half.

The 3rd and 4th quarter we played all the kids equal minutes but our defensive effort was still the same. Mathew Rashidi, Drew Buerler and Mason Adams were a few of our defenisve stand outs in the final half. The final two quarters went by very fast due to the mercy rule being in effect. The final buzzer would sound and we had cruised in for a 34-9 win. We held Optimist to only one point the entire second half. Great job tonight Sizz. See you all next week at practice.

Sizz Week 7 - Player of the Week - Mason Adams

Our player of the week for week 7 of the season is Mason Adams. Mason had a good game on Tuesday night versus Optimist. He did not score in the game but had four big rebounds and played great defense. I have really been challenging him to get more aggressive on the boards and grab rebounds. He responded on Tuesday night and helped us get a big win. Mason has a great attitude and always tries his best. Great job Mason, we are very proud of you!

Sizz blows by Preferred 35-8!

In a game that was never close, we came out a bit rusty, but still cruised to an easy 35-8 win tonight over Preferred Office. Preferred has struggled this season with an 0-8 record. They have nine 3rd graders on their roster and will be a team to contend with next season. But this season has been tough on them. Our kids didn't seem to care what their record was. We came out and played good defense and made it tough for them most of the night.

The opening quarter neither team could get much going for the first couple of minutes. We missed some easy shots but finally got on the board when Ty Jones got a good screen from Mathew Rashidi and drove to the hole for an easy basket. Ashton Alston then sank a jump shot from the wing to give us a 4-0 lead. After another Preferred turnover caused by Jacob Teague, Ty once again scored and sank a free throw to give us a 7-0 lead by the end of the quarter. Kobe Branham and Ty Jones totally controlled the glass in the quarter, grabbing down 9 rebounds between them.

The 2nd quarter we really kicked our defense into gear and forced Preferred into turnovers on most trips down the floor. Trey Grant and Ty turned several of those turnovers into baskets at our end of the floor. With us holding a 15-2 lead, Trey made a great pass to Jayden for a layup to extend our lead even more. After Mason Adams forced another Preferred turnover, Ty would score and we had built a 19-2 lead by the half. 

The final two quarters we made sure all the guys got equal playing time as Preferred never got within 18 points of us the entire second half. Ty had a good half as he would score 5 points. Trey would knock down a couple more jumpers to help extend our lead. Players like Kobe Branham, Jacob Teague, Drew Buergler and Mason Adams all played very good defense and really controlled the boards for us in the half. Mathew had several good plays on defense and set some great screens for Ty, that freed him up for baskets. Jayden Brown was a bulldog on defense once again and made life miserable for the Preferred guards all night. The game would end with us rolling to a 35-8 win.

We were lead in scoring by Ty's 17 points and 14 rebounds. Trey would finish with 9 points, 3 rebounds and at least 7 or 8 assists. Ashton would score 6 points and grabbed down 5 boards. Jayden rounded out our scoring with 3 points and 2 rebounds on the night. We return to action on Saturday in a non-conference game versus Arkoma at 1:00pm. Please be at Goldtrap by 12:30pm on Saturday.  

Sizz Week 8 - Player of the Week - Mathew Rashidi

Our player of the week for week 8 of the season is Mathew Rashidi. Mathew played well in the game tonight versus Preferred Office. He did a lot of things that don't show up on the stat sheet. He freed guys up for several easy baskets by setting screens on the wing. He played very good defense and grabbed down a couple of rebounds in the game. Mathew always plays hard and gives 110% on the floor. He is a fun kid to be around and coach. Great job Mathew, we are very proud of you!

2015 FSBGC Pee Wee City Tourney

Congrats to Gerber for winning the 2015 FSBGC Pee Wee City Championship. Gerber was the #1 seed from the Jeffrey/Stephens league. They defeated the #2 seed Sertoma by one point in the championship game.
