Opening Match of 2020

July 3, 2020

Bob and Nick set out to try and defend their 2019 championship. It was a lovely hot Friday with the course firm and fast.

Gord played brilliantly from the white tees. He hit a lot of greens and made some crucial putts. Greg was steady steady steady. And when he birdied 12 and 15 it was all too much. Poor Bob played to his handicap but Nick was no help at all. A good match and a big welcome and congratulations to Greg.

Played on Friday July 3rd, it was the first Waterfield played, the first match for Greg Reid, against last years first place team ( Also GT's first game from the real white tees ) .
Playing off Bob ( the only stud left among us ) at 6, Nick gets 6 strokes, Greg 2 and myself 4 .
1st hole, I get up and down for birdie, Nick does not. Bob strikes back with a birdie on 2 . A par on 4 is good enough for G & G, 1up. 2up after 6 as G & G make par again . On 7 GT does what he is known for, a cool chip in for birdie and 3up. All cool .... except stroking Nick makes his net birdie on 8 and G & G hand the 9th to the tall folks who win with another par. Front ends with G & G 1up .
No change til 12, where Greg birdies. Nick pars 14 !! for net birdie and the win. Greg counters with a birdie on 15, we go 2up.
16 becomes a critical hole, three of us getting strokes . GT needs the stroke as he can't come close to reaching in two. Our drives all go rightish, Greg and Bob's into the long grass and they have to punch out. I play a good 3-wood but stil 30 yards short. Nick's turn, he is close to the long grass so has to contend with trees in front of him . He hits what seems to be a good shot BUT his ball hits the top of a tree and heads straight right . Strokeless Bob's third isn't that great and GT nervously hits a good pitch to 7 ft below the hole. Bob misses his 25 pitch for par and Gord is conceded his net Birdie. A sudden game over and a 3 and 2 victory for G & G .

Hi Gord,

I enjoyed golfing with you, as well, and I'm already seeing signs that the experience will improve my golf.

I'm happy to do the writing, but as Nick and I were discussing on Friday, I am terrible at remembering what happened in a match.  (When Nick congratulated me for birdie-ing #12 "two days in a row," I had no idea what he was talking about.)  Anyway, I'll give it my best shot but please correct me, as necessary, and apologies to the opponents for not giving them their due.  I know Nick damaged some trees on 16, and Bob was stalwart as always--but my memories end there.

We won the match 3 and 2.  Gord, you shot a 79 highlighted by sterling putting.  I shot my usual boring 82.  My contribution to the match, in addition to putts that went everywhere the hole wasn't, was two birdies on the back nine.

Thoroughly enjoyed my initiation into the Waterfied.  Thanks again for the invitation, Nick.

You were introduced to one of the Waterfield "traditions" in that the

winners purchase the post-round beverages.  Another important winner

obligation is to summarize the matches won.  People approach this

obligation in various ways, although I myself contain the description

to a pithy paragraph.  (One of us -  I won't mention the name of the

lawyer - turns the match description into a brief novel.)

Given that you are a writer, I am hopeful that you will be willing to

describe this past Friday's match for both of us.  And I will be happy

to take on the summary for our next match.

If I haven't already said so, it was a pleasure playing with you and

look forward to our future matches.
