Fred and Mac vs Gord T and Greg. 4 hours and twenty minutes in the heat.
Fred was on in two to win #1 with a par, but Gord’s birdie on #2 evened it up. Mac responded with a net par on #3 to put us back in the one up lead we held until #9 when Fred’s par made it up two.
#10 was split and Greg and Gordie’s pars on #11 reduced our hard earned lead to one. Mac to the rescue on #12 where his net par returned us to the comfortable up two zone; an area Fred maintained with his par on #13 to tie Greg.
The tension mounts on #14 as Fred and Mac hiccup with 6’s to Gord and Greg’s 4’s-back to 1 up, a lead we barely maintain on #15 with Fred’s par as Greg missed an almost sure birdie.
Golf is surely a game with the most unexpected action. On #16 Fred’s hard earned net par puts Mac and Fred up two and we feel we can end it on #17, but the golf gods intervene and provide Greg and Gord with IV infusions of pars to our messed up 5’s and 6’s. One up going into #18 and Gord and Greg have the MO! Mac hits a less than stellar drive, second shot, third shot and is barely on the green in 4 and 80 ft away from the back pin with no strokes. The always dangerous putter Gord is 30 feet from the pin in 4 shots. Fred hits his best drive and second shot of the day; Greg hits even better shots. The dam golf gods say ‘let’s have some fun’. Fred, who’s feeling very confident, pull-hooks his short shot so far out of bound that even a search of the tall grass and the parking lot fails to find it! Greg hits a beautiful shot in to 10 feet. Meanwhile a shout erupts way down at the front of the green, ‘Freddy, I made it!’. It took a while to sink in because everybody forgot about Mac and his 80 foot double breaker. Oh joy, oh joy, the Gervanator strikes at 18 again!
But wait. Gordie has routinely sunk his 30 footer for par and Greg still has a 10 footer for birdie to win the hole and tie the match. Alas, it’s not his day and Fred and Mac stagger into their second win. Thanks for all the wonderful fun guys.
Scores: Mac 100, Fred 86; Gord 85, Greg 83.
