#1 - Fred tried to do the "Bobby Fisher" thing (when Bobby beat Spassky) by showing up late, and came galloping (relatively speaking) onto the first hole after we had let one or two groups go ahead of us. This galloping threw Tom & John off their game (for a hole). Richard sunk a long putt to win. (Tom just missed a 3 footer).
#2 - Fred was in the sand on the right and Rick went kind-of under the trees. Tom got on the fringe in 2 and parred. All even.
#3 - Everyone bogeyed - facing a death-defying wind. No blood.
#4 - John got his mojo going, and got on the green in 3, making par. Rickki made a spectacular chip from 75 yards and sunk the putt. Still all even after 4.
#5 - John & Tom were on in 3, and each were in for par (Fred was in the trees to the left, and Rickki was somewhere else). 1 up after 5.
#6 - Richard put it in the water twice, and Fred bogeyed. Tom parred. 2 up after 6.
#7 - Richard was in the sand on the right, Fred was on the fringe on the left, and both bogeyed. John dropped his 2nd putt for par. 3 up after 7. John says to Tom "it would be nice to be five up after 9".
#8 - Richard chipped to within 3 feet and parred to win the hole. So much for being five up after 9.
#9 - Richard went out of bounds on his second shot and curiously said "this is a provisional" for his third shot, although his ball was clearly 'way out of bounds. At least it's good to be optimistic. John ended up in the sand, Fred was having some difficulty, and Tom put his third shot on the fringe, and parred the hole. 3-up at the turn.
#10 - John made a beautiful shot from 180 yards to gimme range. 4-up after 9. It was starting to look like it was all over but the crying.
#11 - Tom and John hit on and made par. Fred was in the sand and Richard was having troubles. 5-up after 11.
#12 - Fred and Richard showed some life and won the hole with Richard's tremendous third shot from the fairway and then a short put. 4-up after 12.
#13 - Fred was in the water, Richard was off somewhere, and Tom & John each hit the green and made par. 5-up and dormie after 13.
#14 - Fred chipped to within 3 feet and made his putt to par the hole. With nerves of steel, Tom made a long-ish putt for par to tie the hole, and that's all she wrote (5 & 4).
It was a good match - John shot 75, and Tom 84, both doing a fair amount better than their handicaps and playing better than expected. Both Fred and Richard ended with 89's, and were a little off their usual game. A good time.
