Somerville: Once again, Somerville's two-headed backcourt monster proved to be too much for the Malden Golden Tornadoes, as Somerville rolled over Malden 74-56 at Somerville Friday night. Senior guards Kevin Silva and Billy Bonnett combined for 42 of the Highlanders' 74 points in route to the victory. The loss dropped Malden to 7-7 on the season, still 3 victories shy of an automatic state tournament berth.
"We came out flat from the start, with just 7 points in that first quarter." Malden Head Coach Don Nally said before boarding the team bus. "Then, in the second quarter, we got our offense going a bit and our defense let us down. It was a completely ineffective effort."
Malden fell behind 15-7 after the first quarter, failing to even get off shots in several possessions. In the second quarter, Silva and Bonnett combined for 19 of the team's 27 points as the Highlanders built a 16pt halftime lead, 42-26.
The Tornadoes never got closer than 12 points in the second half, trailing by as much as 22 points in the second half. The one bright spot for the Tornadoes was the emergence of junior point guard Wily Metellus. Metellus came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points to go along with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Junior tri-captain Rodney Morton led the Tornadoes with 17 points.
Malden returns to action this Tuesday night as they travel to Cambridge to take on the Falcons. Cambridge will be anxious to avenge an earlier loss to Malden. Game time is 7:00PM.
