Westfield Strong in 6-0 Home Shutout of East Longmeadow

The Bombers came out firing on all cylinders at Amelia Park Wednesday night capturing a convincing 6-0 win over Berry Division foe East Longmeadow.  The victory moved Westfield's record to 7-5 (5-2 Berry) putting them 1 point behind league leading Longmeadow.

This one was over quickly as the Bombers sent wave after wave of forechecking pressure on the Spartans throughout the game.  Spencer Cloutier got the scoring started 2:02 into the game stealing a breakout pass from a Spartan defender deep in the offensive zone and knocking a bouncing shot past a surprised EL netminder.  Three minutes later, it was Joe Taupier's turn as he took a breakout pass, sped down the right wing and cut to the middle of the EL zone and picked the top corner glove side with a wicked wrist shot. It was Taupier’s first varsity goal. Liam Webster capped the first period scoring on a shot through a screen from the point.  The assist on the goal went to Kevin Hosmer, a freshman playing in his 1st varsity game since a serious elbow injury kept him sidelined for the first half of the season.

The second period had the Bombers continuing the onslaught and scoring 3 more goals.  Ryan Moorhouse scored on a rocket wrist shot top shelf glove side on the power play.  That goal was set up by Scotty Bussell who fed the puck from the left half wall down to the corner to Aidan Fitzgerald who sauced a nice pass over a defenseman's stick to Moorhouse in the slot.  That line wasn't finished as Bussell scored with 3:36 remaining with assists to Fitzgerald and Moorhouse to extend the lead to 5.  When Fitzgerald tipped in a Cloutier shot less than a minute later, the rout was on.

The only answer East Longmeadow could muster was during one of their 5 power plays where CJ Czarnecki made some good saves to keep the Spartans off the board.  Ryan Bacon took over between the pipes late in the 2nd period and made several great saves during a couple of EL 5-on-3 opportunities in the 3rd period contributing to the combined shutout.

Hosmer was a nice addition to the third line joining Taupier in keeping the pressure on consistently throughout the game.  Aidan Fitzgerald had a 3 point night (1g, 2a) to lead the Bomber scoresheet.  Webster and Connor Fitzgerald were solid on defense with Fitzgerald dishing out several big clean hits.

Westfield heads to Groton this weekend for a stiff test against the Groton-Dunstable Crusaders, weather permitting.
