Hingham High School Boys Soccer Players:

Tryouts are almost upon us. Please use the information supplied to self-test yourself. The test results are used to make decisions about players who have similar soccer ability. Those who do well on the tests will be selected over lower scoring players.

This year they tryouts will be starting on Monday, 21 August 2023. This will give us a 13-day preseason. With the additional time we can spend more time evaluating candidates. With that in mind we will be doing testing that is soccer specific. We will be testing aerobic capacity, speed, and agility.

The Aerobic Capacity test is called the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery test. This test is used all over the world. Cristiano Rinaldo and Neymar are professional players who have taken this test. This year we will use 18.1 as benchmark for the varsity team. This app had been shared on the team’s Facebook page.

You should download this app and test yourself individually or in a group to see how it fit you are. You have 10 weeks to make sure you are ready. Please note when you run this test that 20 meters is equal to 22 yards.

Hit training is a good way to make sure you are ready. Again, the app had been downloaded onto the team’s Facebook page.

We will be doing a demonstration at the field. The high intensity should be set for 30 seconds and the recovery for 1 minute. Repeat the high intensity for 8 rounds. This work out should only be done every other day to get the most improvement. Again, if you find that your fitness level is not what you wish, this will make dramatic improvements in the time that you have left.

The Speed test is called the flying 30-meter sprint. A flying start means that you are already running when you hit the start line. This is like what we see in a soccer game, where players are generally moving when they start to sprint. This is a new test. A good time in this event would be 4.0 seconds or less. This test is to help us evaluate players. There is no passing or failing time. Practice will make you faster.

The Agility test is the Arrow test. This test has been part of the program. A good time in this event would be 16.0 seconds or less. This test is to help us evaluate players. There is no passing or failing time. This test is done in yards not meters. There is a layout drawing attached in feet and inches. With 2 tapes, you can lay out the course and practice it yourself. Practice will make you faster.

Fitness helps prevent injuries. Many games are won in the last few minutes because fitness allows you to play at a high tempo right to the end of the game, especially when the other team is tired. Fit players make better players, and you have complete control over how fit you will be. If you use the workouts that I had your captains load onto your Facebook page, you should be well prepared.

If you would like to work on your soccer skills and sharpen your fitness, there will also be addition soccer and conditioning opportunities over the summer. These will help you get ready to compete for playing positions.

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday 21 August.
