Pittsford sweeps swimming events for 22nd straight sectional title

Lucas Golembiewski named the Swimmer of the Meet

WEBSTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Death, taxes, and the Pittsford boys swimming winning sectional titles. On Thursday evening at the Webster Aquatic Center, the Panthers grabbed their 22nd straight sectional championship. However, their dominance in this year’s win reached a historic level.

Pittsford swept the swimming events as they took first place in all eleven races. It is the first team in Pittsford history to win eleven events in one sectional meet. There is no other known instance of a boys swimming sweep, however, such records are not officially kept.

“Keep them hungry. Keep them fresh,” said Pittsford head coach Rick Schmitt. “Every year we start out in November and we’re 0-0 with zero sectional championships. It’s a whole new team. I like to say to people that each team has a story. Every year it’s a different way in how we got here. The program may be at 22 but we’re at number one.”

Lucas Golembiewski of Pittsford took home the Swimmer of the Meet honors after winning the 50 and 100-yard freestyle individual races. The senior also was a part of the first-place 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

“I’m still in shock,” said Golembiewski after the meet. “I still have adrenaline rushing in my veins. We’re looking forward to states. It’s not a huge surprise but we’re just happy to be here.”

Fellow Pittsford Panther Cameron Stetzer won both the 200-yard IM as well as 100-yard breaststroke. Stetzer also grabbed two first-place finishes alongside Golembiewski on the relay teams.

Pittsford’s Tim Fan stood atop the podium after winning the 100-yard butterfly as well as the 100-yard backstroke. In addition, Fan took first place on two relay teams.

Ethan Rehkopf won the first individual race of the evening after taking the 200-yard freestyle. Rehkopf also won 500-yard freestyle as well as two relay events.

The only thing preventing the Panthers from a clean 12-for-12 sweep was last week’s diving competition, in which Irondeuqoit’s George Ligozlo took first.

Pittsford finished with a combined team score of 563.5 while Webster took second place with 267. Fairport, Brighton, and Penfield rounded out the top five.
