The Primetime 585 News 8 Spotlight Team of the Week is the Pittsford boys swimming and diving team.
The Panthers recently won the Shen Invitational, a meet that featured some of the top teams in New York. They’ve won this event 11 of the last 14 years, and this year, had seven state cuts to automatically qualify for states.
Pittsford continued its dominance against Hilton with a 109-74 win this past week. Billy Sanderson led the way for the Panthers, winning all four of his events. Sanderson won the 200m free, 100m free, and was a part of the 200m freestyle relay and 400m freestyle relay. Pittsford won both relays.“During workouts, we’re always pushing each other. Telling you, ‘Do your push-ups, do your sit-ups,'” Sanderson said. “In the water, when someone stops, we’re always like, ‘Keep going! Don’t stop!’ We always push each other, make sure everybody’s working their hardest around the pool. We hang out with each other all the time. So, we have a lot of good chemistry on the team.”
This team has a lot of talent, including freshman Kosta Oluic and junior Rigo Cunningham. “We’re young, we’re very close,” Cunningham said. “At practice, we push each other. We work hard. We definitely try to stay disciplined.”
With historic success, this team is going for its 24th consecutive sectional championship.
“I think it’s a culture. There’s expectations in the program,” head coach Rick Schmitt said. “I think we get the kids in young and set the tone for expectations. I don’t think they want to let the next generation down. I think it’s passed on from one year to another.”

PCSD 2025 Winter Sports End of Season Report
Congratulations to our winter athletes who completed the 2024-25 season with five team Section V titles, nine individual Section V titles and numerous All State, All County and All Greater Rochester athletes. Team Section V champions included Pittsford Girls Alpine, Pittsford Ice Hockey, Pittsford Boys Swimming & Diving, MHS Boys Indoor Track and Field, and SHS Girls Basketball. Individual Section V winners included Pittsford Wrestling champions Zach Gerby and Samson McKissick Staley, and Pittsford Boys Swimming & Diving champions Elliott Cunniffe, Kosta Oluic, Rigo Cunningham, Gage Van Quekelberg, Billy Sanderson, Michael Kusch, and Calvin Braun. All teams were recognized as Scholar-Athlete Teams with average GPAs of the top 75% of the roster achieving a GPA greater than or equal to 90.00.

Congratulations to Coach Schmitt, who was recognized as Boys Coach of the Year! Not just swimming coach of the year -- coach of the year for ALL winter sports! That's HUGE! And well-deserved!

You’ve also heard a little bit about our boys coach of the winter.
Not only did he train the first boys swimmer to qualify for all 11 state events, he authored his own clean sweep.
Pittsford swimming not only won sectionals for the 22nd consecutive season, they swept sectionals, becoming the first team to have the winner in every event.
His 200 and 400-yard relay teams set new Section Five records…. the Panthers were a runner up at states and broke enough pool records this season to fill a pool….
Our boys coach of the winter is Rick Schmitt from Pittsford swimming.

News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Awards: Boys Swimming

Large Schools
Any discussion of our large school winner must begin with the extraordinary history he made this year.
Becoming what’s believed to be the first male swimmer in Section Five history to record a time fast enough that qualified him for all 11 state events.
Since he’s only allowed to compete in four events at a meet. That’s the number of events he won in sectionals, taking the 100 breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley along with a part of wins in two relay events.
At the state finals he finished 4th in the 100 freestyle and 7th in the 200 I-M.
He made the podium twice more at states with a third place in the 400-yard relay and a second place in the 200-yard relay. The latter of which was a time that set a new Section Five record.
This senior is heading to Binghamton next year. The News 8 Primetime 585 Elite award winner is Cameron Stetzer from Pittsford.
Historic Pittsford Sectionals Sweep for 22nd Straight Title!
Congratulations to the team on the historic win! They are the first team in Section V history to win every single event at Sectionals! That's right -- all eleven events. And an unprecendented 22-year Sectionals winning streak! The most dominating performance in Section V history!
Lucas Golembiewski crushed it to bring home the Swimmer of the Meet Award!
Tim Fan was given the Sportsmanship Award. Cameron Stetzer was named Monroe County D1 Swimmer of the Year for the second year.
Golembiewski took the new meet and team record in the 50 free, Stetzer captured the new meet record for the 200 IM, and the 200 free relay (Golembiewski, Calvin Braun, Ethan Rehkopf & Stetzer) grabbed the Section V record!

Panthers Win 2023 Shen Invitational -- 7 Straight Titles!
The Shenendehowa Invitational is the fastest meet in NYS, other than the State Championships. Pittsford won the first place title out of 20 teams, in spite of having no divers in the meet (our new diving crew didn't yet have 11 dives, so weren't able to participate). They won 7 of 11 events, captured all 3 relays, made 10 state cuts and kicked this season off in a big way! This is the 7th straight title for Pittsford Boys Swimming! Congratulations, boys & coaches!
