Barons capture fifth league title in a row, seventh overall, in a great come from behind effort!

It helps if you have been here before.  After the first two games of this Championship Series, it was not only that the Arlington Mallards had the defending DC Wood Champion Falls Church Barons down 2-0; it was also the decisive way they had done it.  In the first game, the Barons were up 4-1 with two outs in the ninth inning, one out from taking this Championship Series opener when the Mallards offense suddenly started whacking the ball around, scored 4 runs, took a one-run lead and closed out a depression-inducing first game loss for the Barons.  The second game was a 10-3 blow out in which the Barons were never really competitive.  What did the Barons’ GM, Rafael Martinez have to say then?  “The Mallards are a great team!  They really have some hard throwers on the mound, great defense and they can really hit!”  Yet, somehow, strangely, as the teams came out for game three, the pressure seemed to be on the Mallards.  The Barons just showed up, got behind some veteran pitching, hit just enough, played just enough defense and got themselves a 3-1 win to stave off the Series loss for just one day.  Then, in game four, they got out fast on offense to take a first-inning lead and got another quality veteran pitching job.  But the Mallards kept playing.  By the end of nine innings the game was tied.  The Barons got a clutch hit to take a one run lead in the 10th.  When that lead held the series had evened up.

For game 5, the Barons sent their ace, McClure to the mound.  He was rudely greeted by the determined Mallards, and the Barrons were down 2-0 before they could send a player to the plate in the first inning.  When they did, however, it was clear that they were equally determined.  Barnes sent the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning over the right field fence!   Then, before the first inning was complete, the Barons’ McEnhimer smacked a two-run home run to dead center to give the Barons the final lead of this series.  The Barons added 4 runs in the third inning, highlighted by a Glaser bloop single that drove in 2.  The Mallards did not feel this ball game was over yet, however, and in the top of the fifth, the Mallards they got two runs to cut the lead to 7-4.   But in the bottom of the sixth Shoenfeld's infield single drove in a runner from third.  In the seventh, the Barons’ Ortiz sent a ball over the fence and way past the tree line in left centerfield, giving the Barons a their final 9-4 lead.  The Barons’ McClure, who pitched well after surviving the first inning trouble, was dead tired as he took the mound in the ninth to finish his job, and the still game Mallards got runners to first and second with one out.  But when McClure got a big strikeout and an easy ground ball back to himself he was able to record the final out and complete the Barons’ fantastic comeback series win. This victory gives the Barons their 5th consecutive D.C. Wood Title and cements their legacy as one of the best local adult baseball teams of the decade!  This is also the Barons 7th overall title.  Caylor, Nelson, and Martinez have been a part of all 7!  Congratulations to the Barons on their latest win and their tradition of excellence!

Barons capture fourth league title in a row, sixth overall, in a great series!

With everyone well rested by the forced time off, the Fall Church Barons sent their season-long workhorse, McClure to the mound.  The Alexandria A's countered with Bryner.  Both pitchers commanded the game through the first two innings.  But in the 3rd, the A's Miller drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Then Kassman drew a walk and both runners moved up on another passed ball, giving the A's runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Denevi's groundout to second brought Miller home before McClure struck out Bryner to end the inning with the A's up by one.  In the bottom of the third Bryner made quick work of the first two Baron batters, but when he gave the Barons an opening by walking Davis, Garcia's single followed by Lezak's single tied the game.  Jackson then smacked a single to left that drove in two more runs to put the Barons up 3-1.  In the bottom of the 4th, the Barons, who did not get a run this night before first getting two out, scored two more when Davis drove two more Barons home with a double to left.  The A's never quit, but after the fourth, the game was over.  McClure breezed through three more innings before being replaced by Glaser in the eighth.  Glaser gave up a single to Bryner to open the eighth, then got a fly out from Garbozci for the first out. The next pitch to McClusky was singled to right putting runners on 1st and 2nd. But Glaser's tailing slider to Rivera was bounced right back to Glaser who started the inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.  After a quick bottom of the 8th by A's reliever, Sokolowski, Glaser had one more inning to close out the game.  Glaser got a quick groundout from Barkett but walked Borque.  Again, Glaser tossed the same slider that he threw to Rivera in the previous inning and induced a sharp groundball to short.  Taran fielded it, tossed it to Lezak who fired it close enough for McEnhemier to scoop it and end the game!  McClure picked up his second win of the Championship series, allowing only one earned run in both outings.  Lezak led the offense with 3 hits, while Davis and Jackson picked up two RBI each.

The Barons complete the "DC WOOD SWEEP" for the second consecutive year! This marks the Barons 4th straight league title and 6th league title overall.  Caylor, Nelson, and Martinez have been a part of all 6 titles dating back to 2008.
