NATIONAL RUNNER-UP 2014 (game recaps below)

Mattie earns World Series pitching MVP
GAME 1: Lightning tied Augusta, Ks. in the first game. Down 3-2 in the final frame, the first three lightning batters walked. With one out and basis loaded, McKinley hit an RBI single. The next two lightning batters struck out and Augusta forced the tie. Shea pitched the opener allowing only 5 hits while getting a no-decision on the tie. Lightning had four hits in the game.
GAME 2: Lightning bats lit up enroute to a 14-2 romping of Sedalia, Mo. Hot bats for the Lightning were TeAnna going 3 for 3 and 2 rbi's; McKinley was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base; Taylor went 2 for 3 with 1 run scored and 1 rbi. Winning pitcher, Shea, went the distance allowing only 1 hit in the game. Lightning struck early putting up 5 runs in the 1st and 4 in the 2nd inning. They added 5 more insurance runs in the 4th. Lightning ended the game with 12 hits. The Lightning go 1-0-1 on opening day of the World Series. Next game for the Lightning is Trenton, Mo. Twisters.
Game 3: The Lightning saw their 4-1 lead evaporate starting in the third inning when Trenton, Mo. laced 3 doubles scoring a run. Trenton tied the game in the 5th after a pair of doubles. In the last frame, Lightning was able to pull through when TeAnna hit a sacrafice fly to center field scoring Mattie for the winning run and a 6-5 Lightning victory. Shea pitched 4 1/3 innings and was relieved by Mattie in the 5th and got the win. McKinley went 2 for 3, TeAnna was 1 for 2 with 2 rbi's. Lightning to play Aftershock out of Jay, Oklahoma next in championship bracket sweet 16.
Game 4: Lightning advance to the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket with a 7-4 win over Jay, Oklahoma. Lightning spent little time putting up runs against Jay, Ok. In the first, Taylor hit a single bringing in two runs and another run scored on an overthrow and the Lightning went up 3-0. In the second, the Lightning added four more runs when Mattie hit a triple scoring 2 runs and then went home on an errant throw to third and the Lightning took a comfortable 7-0 lead. Jay threatened in the third with a 3-run homerun but the Lightning stopped the advance and held on for a 7-3 victory. Mattie was the winning picture going the distance giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. Their opponent in the quarterfinals will be Norman, Oklahoma, the defending Oklahoma state champions.
Game 5: Lightning upend Oklahoma state champions from Norman 5-1 and advance to the winner's bracket semi-finals to face in-state rivals Gretna Storm. Lightning took a 2-0 lead in the first when Halie hit a double scoring the games first two runs. Norman scored a run in the top of the third and the Lightning answered with 2 in the bottom half off McKinley's double that plated two. Lightning added an insurance run in the 4th to hold on for the win. Mattie went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Josie went 2 for 2 scoring one. Mattie picked up the win allowing 1 run on 6 hits.
Game 6: Lightning topped Gretna 4-1 setting up the winner's bracket finals against Osage Beach, Missouri, the only other undefeated team in the tournament. Lightning score twice in the 2nd inning. Brianna drew a walk and scored on Taylor's triple. Taylor scored on Sienna's groundout to the shortstop. Gretna scored one run in the 5th to make it 2-1. In the top of the 6th, back-to-back singles by Halie and Brianna. They scored on back-to-back sacrafice fly's by Taylor and Sienna. Lightning held Gretna from scoring in the final frame. Sienna went 2 for 3 with 2 rbi's. Mattie got the pitching win allowing 1 run on 8 hits.
Game 7: Lightning lost a heartbreaker in the winner's bracket semifinals with a walk-off 3-run homerun by Osage Beach, Mo. Lightning held a 5-3 lead in the last inning when Osage Beach notched a run prior to the game-ending home run. Osage Beach won 7-5. Lightning outhit Missouri 10 hits to 7. Shea was 3 for 3, Mattie was 2 for 3 with two rbi's. Mattie was tagged with the loss with Osage Beach scoring 7 runs on 7 hits. The loss drops the Lightning to the loser's bracket finals against Gretna who beat McCook, Ne. 3-2 to advance.
Game 8: Lightning score 3 times in the bottom of the 6th and held Gretna in the 7th to win 3-2 and advance to the national championship game. Sam and Josie reached base on back-to-back singles and Shea reached on an error. Sam scored when Shea reached first on a Gretna error. Josie scored on McKinley's sacrafice fly to center and Shea scored on Mattie's sacrafice fly to left. Shea picked up the win allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.
Game 9: Lightning lose in finals 7-1 to Osage Beach, Missouri. Lightning score their lone run in the 5th when Taylor singled and scored on Sam's single.
