European Cup Finalist at LBBOB Dinner on 2 June 2012

Lurgan BBOB held their Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday 2 June 2012 at Brownlow House with a good turnout of around 50 people in attendance. Guest of Honour was Paddy McAllister, Ulster Rugby European Cup Finalist this year, accompanied by his girlfriend, Deborah Craig.

After an entertaining question and answer session between Special Guest Paddy McAlister and Lurgan BBOB MC Mark Emerson, as well as questions from the floor, the Awards were distributed. BBOB’s Youth dominated the prizes. In addition to BBOB Youth Team’s own Awards, the prestigious Club Merit Award was shared for the first time by the Youth Team’s Joint Managers Matthew Greer and Michael Wheatley for stepping in as the Management from the start of the season. Matthew Greer created another first too, in winning the club’s coveted Young Player of the Year for a record third time. It was also a Youth Team player in Andrew Crowe that won the well earned Clubman of the Year Trophy for his totally committed performances at Training, in the Youth Team, 2nd Team and 1st Team.

The top goalscorer prizes were won by Matthew Gordon for the Youth Team, Phil Moutray for retaining the 2nd Team title, and Richard Ferguson for the 1st Team, who just pipped Henry Capper by one goal in a highscoring partnership.

Andrew Smyth won the Youth Team Player of Year for his displays all over the pitch, right from defensive full back positions through wide midfield areas to leading the attack. The 2nd Team Player of the Year went to quite another youthful player in Jonny Bann, for excellent combative performances both in the centre of defence and centre of midfield. With all this talk of youth, the importance of the senior players was not forgotten, as senior player and club skipper Mark Russell created history in becoming the first player to retain the Club Player of the Year in the 1st Team.

Another senior player, Derek Wilson, who had another great season in the 1st Team, was given a special presentation to mark 500 appearances for the team.

To conclude the night, special presentations were made on behalf of the club by Neil McConville to Guest of Honour Paddy McAllister and by Ben Nelson to Paddy’s girlfriend, Deborah.

Lurgan BBOB travelled to local rivals Lurgan Institute without their normal front three and still managed to go 2-1 up by half-time before eventually drawing 2-2 in a well contested match, on a very sticky pitch, played in blustery conditions.

Lurgan BBOB Youth hosted mid table Lisburn Rangers Youth in the literal game of two halves as Lisburn took a worthy 2-0 half-time lead before BBOB came storming back in the second half to record a deserved 2-2 draw, with BBOB even having a late penalty kick saved to deny them victory.

Division 2: Tullyvallen 3 Lurgan BBOB 2, 25-11-06
