MDSL Update ~ Board Votes to Cancel the 2020 Season
Saturday, May 30, 2020

For 35 years, MDSL has been about creating safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, your board has determined that this year, the fields are not a safe space for us.

The board’s decision was based on a number of factors … USSSA guidelines, state executive orders, interactions with field management, the feedback of our members and managers, and our monitoring of the ongoing news cycle.

We want you to know that, although canceling the 2020 season was a difficult choice, it was a unanimous one.  Seeing you safe and healthy is our top priority.

Here are some additional determinations that we want you to know about as we all work towards our safe return to the fields in 2021:

Finances:  The league is positioned with the needed field credits and reserve finances to execute the 2021 season, as well as to enact any potential 2020 events or fundraisers.

Sponsors:  We greatly appreciate the contributions that our sponsors have made, and commit to hold-over their sponsorship pledges for full delivery in the 2021 season. We also pledge a year-round commitment of patronage and support to those who have supported us.

Player Refunds:  Those members that have already paid their season dues should connect with their team manager regarding refunds.

2020 Tournament or Scrimmage:  If permissible, the board is committed to enacting some kind of on-field event to be held in late summer.

Board Elections:  Your 2020 elected representatives have pledged to hold over in their current capacities until such time as a season can be enacted and the chartered on-field elections can be executed.

Board Meetings:  The MDSL executive board will meet bi-weekly on Wednesdays, 7 p.m. commencing June 3 through August 26.  Once monthly meetings will be held from there until otherwise determined.

Conversations that led to these determinations are detailed as part of the executive board and manager meetings’ meeting minutes, which are available for review at MDSL.org.

Those wishing to petition additional views or redetermination consideration may do so via note or telephone call to league commissioner, Curtis Paul:  CCarrollPaul@YMail.com, (248) 496-2968.

We are saddened to bring you this news today.  We are however encouraged by the clarity that this new direction brings, and by the notion that these decisions will help keep our members safe.

We hope that you all stay well, and that we will see each of you on the fields in the spring of 2021.

~ Your MDSL Executive Board
