DILLON TRYING TO GO UNDEFEATED
'A' CHAMPIONSHIP GM PREVIEW
BUTTE – Saturday’s Class A state championship game between the Dillon Beavers and Columbia Falls Wildcats may cause some déjà vu.
After all, it is a rematch of the 2016 title game, which also took place at Vigilante Stadium in Dillon.
The Beavers – led by Troy Andersen at quarterback – won that matchup 34-17, its most recent of eight state championships.
Columbia Falls won its first and only state title the following season.
Since then, both programs have been craving the chance to once again claim the Class A crown.
“I think it starts with revisiting some of those goals we set at the start of the year. At the top of the board is ‘win a state championship’. There’s only two teams left and all of our goals and everything we want to accomplish is right in front of us,” Dillon head coach Zach McRae said
How they got here
No team has been able to solve the puzzle that is the 2023 Beavers, as they enter the title game with an unblemished 10-0 record.
After receiving an opening round bye, Dillon outlasted Havre with a game-winning touchdown in the final minute of the quarterfinals.
Last week, the Beavers took out Lewistown – the defending Class A champions – in dominant fashion as they opened up a 26-0 lead before surrendering two touchdowns in the final three minutes.
The Wildcats’ (9-2) road has had a couple of bumps, but they are currently riding a seven-game winning streak into Saturday’s game.
After consecutive losses in September (including a defeat to Dillon), Columbia Falls has found its stride.
It avenged its only other loss in the first round of the playoffs with a 42-0 clobbering of Whitefish.
The Wildcats took down previously undefeated Billings Central (21-16) in the quarterfinals, and Corvallis (19-7) last week to advance to the championship.
The rematch
More relevant to this matchup than the 2016 title game, is the rematch from earlier this season.
Dillon defeated Columbia Falls on Sept. 8, 22-19. It was the second game of the Beavers’ season, and the third for the Wildcats.
From Dillon’s perspective, the game that took place nearly two and a half months ago doesn’t hold much weight.
“It feels like an eternity ago,” McRae said.
“We’ve already learned the lessons from that game and I’m sure they have too. They’re a much better football team than when we saw them there.”
A lot has changed since that early-season battle.
With a combined winning streak of 17 games between the Beavers and Wildcats, both teams appear to be playing their best football of the season at the perfect time.
Quarterback dual
Both teams have leaned heavily on its senior signal-callers to get to this point.
For Columbia Falls, its Montana football commit Cody Schweikert. He has given opposing defenses fits with both his arm and his legs, throwing for 22 touchdowns and adding another 19 on the ground.
They are very dual-threat on offense. And even on their drop backs, a priority of ours is to try to keep him (Schweikert) hemmed in. He makes a lot plays – made a lot in the playoffs – on some of that second reaction stuff,” McRae said.
Schweikert, who also leads the Wildcats in tackles with 10 per game, is aided offensively by wide receiver Jace Hill. The senior has hauled in 10 touchdowns and averages 78.7 receiving yards per game.
Dillon’s third-year starting quarterback Kee Christiansen gives his team a dual-threat option as well
Christiansen has totaled 35 touchdowns through 10 games while also playing safety and punter for the Beavers. In the semifinal win over Lewistown, Christiansen totaled three touchdowns, an interception on defense and a punt that landed inside the one-yard line.
Surrounded by playmakers like running back Kale Konen and wide receivers Max Davis and Cooper Anderson, it makes for potent offensive attack.
Of course, in a state championship game there are great players all over the field, but the quarterbacks on each side just might be the best.
Dominant defense
The Beavers and Wildcats play a similar brand of football, and it starts with defense.
Dillon has surrendered 10.1 points per game, while Columbia Falls has allowed just 9.7 points per game
The Wildcats have five shut outs on the season, and have given up only 23 points in their last four games.
“We feel like all year we’ve actually had the best defense in the state,” said Jaxon Schweikert, Wildcats’ coach and father of Cody, after the semifinal win.
On the other end, the Beavers have held opponents to seven or less points on five occasions this year.
Even with a pair of offenses that are littered with playmakers, points could be tough to come by on Saturday

Class A
• Columbia Falls 42, Whitefish 0: Cody Schweikert ran for three scores and tossed a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Wildcats to a blowout win over the rival Bulldogs. Jace Hill and Mark Robison hauled in touchdown passes. Backup quarterback and freshman Banyan Johnston added a final score on a two-yard keeper.
• Laurel 35, Glendive 7: Owen Younger ran for 174 yards and four touchdowns as the Locomotives spotted the Red Devils a touchdown and then roared back with five consecutive scores in a first-round romp. After a scoreless first quarter, Glendive broke the ice – literally – with a 6-yard pass from Ryan Amsler to Chase Crockett. The lead was short-lived, however, as Younger evened the score moments later with a 14-yard run and put Laurel ahead for good with an 8-yarder. Then came the back-breaker: A 61-yard interception return to paydirt by Cam McAllister just before halftime for a 21-7 lead. Younger, who had 25 carries, finished his day with a 6-yard run in the third quarter and a 4-yarder in the fourth. Laurel (8-2) advances to play at Corvallis (7-1) next week. Glendive finishes 4-6.

Around Class A: Corvallis shook off a loss to top-ranked Dillon from two weeks ago and knocked off previous No. 3 Hamilton last week by a 17-3 score. The Blue Devils are now ranked as high as they've been this season at No. 3 while Hamilton slipped to No. 5. No. 1 Dillon and No. 2 Billings Central remain the only unbeatens in Class A and look to keep their unbeaten streaks intact this Friday, which is the final week of the regular season.

Class A
• No. 2 Dillon 35, No. 1 Hamilton 14: Max Davis had an unforgettable night with two touchdown receptions and an interception return for a score as the Beavers (6-0) staked their claim to the No. 1 ranking by handling the Broncs (5-1). Davis got Dillon off on the right foot with a 60-yard catch from Kee Christiansen, who had another big night with two TD passes and a 56-yard scamper. Hamilton pulled within 13-7 in the second quarter on a pass from Lucas Lant to Hunter Stewart.
• No. 3 Billings Central 49, Hardin 0: Thomas Norman ran for three touchdowns and Adam Balkenbush connected with William Snell from 51 yards out as the Rams sprinted to a 30-0 lead after one quarter on the way to pounding the Bulldogs. Central racked up 475 total yards. The Rams led 42-0 at halftime.
• Frenchtown 35, Ronan 7: Brody Hardy ran for two touchdowns and passed for two others to lead the Broncs past the Chiefs. Ronan took an early 7-0 lead on a 6-yard pass from Kolby Finley to Laurance Lozean, but Frenchtown rattled off the next 35 points. Hardy ran in from 10, hit Dillon Warner on a 10-yard pass, rambled for 41 yards for a score, and found Billy Corette from 18 yards to make it 28-7. Warner caught a second TD pass, a 14-yarder from Cole Ziegler, to close the scoring.
• Columbia Falls 41, Libby 0: Cody Schweikert passed for three scores and ran for a fourth, and Mark Robison had a 50-yard punt return to paydirt as well as a 12-yard TD reception as the Wildcats blanked the Loggers. Alihn Anderson did his share for Columbia Falls, catching a 20-yard scoring strike and returning the second half kickoff 85 yards to the end zone. Jace Hill's 23-yard reception provided the Wildcats' final score. Libby had 94 yards of total offense.
• Laurel 30, Havre 17: Tanner Schwend tossed three touchdown passes and ran for the fourth for the Locomotives, who took care of the Blue Ponies. Schwend found Isaiah Burt from 7 yards, Kade Wersland from 41 and Cameron McAlister from 20 before producing a 1-yard plunge for a 30-10 lead. Tate Nelson's 3-yard run accounted for Havre's lone offensive TD.
• In other Class A action, Lockwood toppled East Helena 36-29, No. 5 Lewistown rolled past Miles City 33-6, Glendive tripped Sidney 26-20, Laurel whipped Havre 30-17, Bigfork ran past Browning 54-28, Butte Central edged Livingston 17-14 for its first win of the season, and Whitefish crushed Stevensville 62-14.

• No. 2 Billings Central 42, Miles City 6: Adam Balkenbush ran for a pair of touchdowns, including a 60-yard burst, and Ayden Salter, Duncan Nuckols andVincent Souza found paydirt for the Rams, who handed coach Jim Stanton his 250th career victory. Stanton becomes just the fourth coach to ever reach that lofty total, behind former CMR coach Jack Johnson (340), Baker's Don Schillinger (318), and Tim Racicot of Frenchtown (258). Jack DeBourg also grabbed a touchdown pass from Balkenbush for the Rams.
• No. 3 Corvallis 49, Stevensville 0: Aydan Mayn fired four touchdown passes, Logan Avery ran for two scores, one of them a 72-yard burst, and the Blue Devils (4-1, 7-1) donned their new "Blackout Jersey Set" for their Senior Night Blackout Game. Corvallis finished with their best regular-season win percentage since moving to Class A in 1997. The Blue Devil defense leads all A teams in allowing just 49 points through eight games.Gideon Boswell took a first-quarter punt 75 yards for a touchdown, his fourth punt return for a TD this year, tops in the state. Solomon Morgan, Dillen Potter, Boswell and Cameron Whiteley were the recipients of Mayn touchdown passes.

LIBBY 35 POLSON 26* Loggers topple Polson, but Pirates almost rally way back

At Libby, the gridiron game between the visiting Pirates and the host Loggers could be broken down to a contrast between two halves for the visitors. Exacerbated by a stingy Logger defense during first half action, the half dozen Polson possessions might as well have been mired by a mud made of molasses. Sandwiched between turnover-on-down bookends were a pair of punts along with a tandem of detrimental drive debilitating picks. Real estate yardage gains on the ground could be counted on one hand, while the air attack yielded just slightly over a half century worth of yardage gained.
Libby would take full advantage of Pirate offensive struggles, forging a two score lead at the half, then doubling the lead during the ealy segment of the third quarter before the Polson offense found some spark.
Pirate signal-caller Holden Emerson would connect with Brenden Griffen in the endzone to scrub the goose egg off their half of the scoreboard. Libby would counter toward the end of the third period as Logger quarterback Tristan Andersen connected with Isaac Lamere for a second time to reclaim their four score advantage.
Thereafter, final frame action would more closely reflect the potency of the Pirate playbook as they would score thrice. Cody Haggard would block a Logger punt inside the 20 yard line, scoop it up, then score. About midway through the quarter, Emerson would connect once again with Griffen to carve further into the deficit after the missed extra point, 20-35 . Inside of three minutes, Emerson would then find receiver Tommy Sherry open for a 65 yard score. The two point conversion would be unsuccessful, whittling down the lead into single digit territory, 26-35.
Though the rally would fall somewhat short, the second half surge provided a better indicator of latent Pirate capabilities than their first half performance. Typically a tough venue to play, the Libby experience should provide stepping stones for forging building blocks as the team traverses deeper into the schedule.

• Billings Central 24, Havre 3: Adam Balkenbush hit Brayden Flores for a 16-yard touchdown and ran for another score, and the Rams defense stymied the Blue Ponies as Central moved to 2-0 on the season. Havre led briefly in the opening quarter on a 27-yard Ty Golie field goal, but the Central pass rush and run defense slammed the door after that. Jack Debourg added a second-quarter field goal for the Rams, and Thomas Norman hit pay dirt on a four-yard run.
• Lewistown 21, Laurel 0: Dan Ruff opened the scoring with a 15-yard pass to Wylee Snapp in the second quarter and Kieran Netburn doubled the lead with a 2-yard run in the third as the defending state champion Golden Eagles fended off a challenge from the Locomotives (1-1) with stout defense. Brady Bantz capped the scoring with a 20-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter for Lewistown (2-0).
• Bigfork 35, Ronan 0: Asher Knopik rushed for two scores and caught one of Tristen Herd’s three TD passes as the Vikings continued their impressive early run in Class A. Knopik ran for scores of 8 and 5 yards on the way to 79 yards on the ground for Bigfork, which was Class B a year ago. Wyatt Johnson caught a 20-yeard scoring strike from Herd and Elijah Thorness had another from 7 yards out.
Corvallis 41, Frenchtown 6: Aydan Mayn threw three touchdown passes and ran for the first score as the Blue Devils scored the game’s final 41 points in a romp over the Broncs. Bennett Boelman caught Mayn’s first TD toss and added a 38-yard pick-6. James Nordenstrom was 6-for-7 on extra points for Corvallis. Billy Corette’s 63-yard TD reception from Brody Hardy put Frenchtown on the board first in the first quarter

Miles City drubs Laurel for Class A title

MILES CITY -- The Miles City upperclassmen had been dreaming of this moment since they were little kids.
The Cowboys claimed the Class A state football title with a 35-7 win over Laurel in front of their home fans at Denton Field at Connors Stadium to bookend the decade with championships.
Miles City started fast, scoring on the game's opening possession. The Cowboys chewed up more than six minutes of clock on the drive, which was capped by a 10-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Carson Hunter. After a Laurel punt, it looked like Miles City would add to its lead after Hunter hit Jess Bellows for a huge gain, but Bellows had the ball ripped out by Keagan Campbell giving Laurel possession.
Turnovers, though, were just beginning. Laurel drove the ball deep into Miles City territory, but Cameron Younger had the ball stripped and Miles City took over. The Cowboys, though, gave it right back. In Laurel territory the Cowboys opted for a halfback pass by Jess Bellows. Bellows, though, was intercepted.
Again Laurel drove the ball methodically down the field on the heels of its rushing attack, but the turnover buck struck again. Younger never fully controlled the handoff from Eli Aby and coughed it up into the waiting arms of Aidan Barrows.
The teams traded punts and the Cowboys took over with 1:38 left in the first half. Hunter drove Miles City down the field and tossed a 17-yard touchdown to a wide open Barrows to push the Cowboys' lead to 14-0 at halftime.
After forcing a Laurel punt, Miles City finally struck with a big play. Hunter uncorked a deep ball to Bellows, who caught it in stride near midfield and went streaking untouched into the end zone for an 84-yard touchdown to put the Cowboys up 21-0.
An Ethan Renner 52-yard touchdown pass from Aby at the beginning of the fourth quarter cut the Miles City advantage to 21-7, but the Cowboys turned to Barrows and their rushing attack to milk the clock. Miles City took it down to the 1-yard line before Hunter crossed the plane for his second rushing score of the night.
Laurel fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Hunter hit Bellows for the duo's second scoring connection of the day to give Miles City its 35-7 margin.
Hunter, a junior, rushed for two scores and passed for three more to lead Miles City to the victory. Bellows caught a pair of touchdowns during his monster day
No. 1 Miles City handles No. 4 Laurel for 1st state title since 2010
MILES CITY — Miles City’s dominant season concluded with a 35-7 win over Laurel in the Class A football state title game.
The top-ranked Cowboys finished the season 11-0 and won their first state championship since 2010. Saturday’s win at Connors Stadium was their second over No. 4 Laurel (9-2) this season.
Miles City received the ball to open the first half and embarked on a drive that lasted more than six minutes. Junior quarterback Carson Hunter ran 10 yards for a touchdown to put Miles City up 7-0 with 5:45 left in the first quarter
Hunter connected with senior Aidan Barrows with 38 seconds left in the second quarter on a 17-yard pass to increase the lead to 14-0.
Each team committed two turnovers in the first half. The Locomotives coughed the ball up two more times in the final two quarters, marking the second straight game the Cowboys forced four takeaways (they beat No. 3 Hamilton 28-14 last week).
Hunter completed touchdown passes of 84 and 20 yards to senior Jess Bellows in the second half, and he ran two yards for the other TD.
Laurel’s lone score came with five seconds left in the third quarter, when junior Eli Aby connected with senior Ethan Renner on a 52-yard pass

Billings Central grabs Class A state title over Hamilton, 28-21
HAMILTON — In match-up of contrasting offensive styles, the Billings Central Rams held off the Hamilton Broncs to take the Class A state title by a score of 28-21.
The Broncs opened the scoring on an 18-yard pass from Carson Rostad to Tucker Jones. The Rams would get their hands on the point-after-touchdown attempt to keep the Broncs lead at 6-0. Jones appeared to be Rostad’s favorite receiver on the afternoon, as the he was targeted seven times in the first half alone.
The Rams had a long field to work with on their next possession, needing 83 yards to find pay dirt. Central drove the ball 82 yards on 11 run plays and one pass, only to come up a yard short after the ball was stripped from running back Jack Studer’s grasp.
However, the Rams didn’t drive that far to walk away empty-handed, forcing a Broncs three-and-out that would put the Rams on a short field. With only 42 yards to go in the opening half, the Rams would finally get on the scoreboard with a 1-yard run by Studer to put the Broncs up 7-6.
The Rams would score their next two touchdowns uncontested on a 75-yard run and a 2-yard run, both by Duncan Kraft.
Despite a rough second quarter for Hamilton, the Broncs came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. Behind a 44-yard run by Michael Golden and three connections between Rostad and Tyler Barnes, one for a 2-point conversion, the Broncs were able to cut the Rams’ lead to one possession, 21-14.
The Rams took their next drive and drove the ball deep before settling for a field goal try. However, Hamilton blocked the kick in an effort to keep the momentum moving in its direction. The attempt would fall flat as the Rams forced another three-and-out.
Again on a short field following a punt, the Rams would cash in on the ground, this time on a 12-yard run by quarterback Joe Byorth to put the Rams up 28-14 with just over 11 minutes left in the game.
Feeling the pressure of a bleeding clock, the Broncs went to the air early in the fourth quarter. After driving from near their 35-yard line, the Broncs would turn the ball over in the Rams red zone with only a few minutes left in the game.
The Broncs refused to go quietly, though, as they stopped the Rams’ attempt to drain the clock and scored with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter.
The Broncs effort, while valiant, would not produce a win. Central recovered the Broncs onside kick, sealing the game and capping an unbeaten season with the Class A title.
Ramming speed: Billings Central holds Hamilton in check for Class A crown

HAMILTON — In 2017, it was Hamilton that dealt Billings Central heartache in the Class A playoffs.
On Saturday at the Broncs' new Hamilton Athletic Complex, the Rams returned the favor.
No. 2-ranked Billings Central bulldozed its way to a 28-21 Class A state title win against No. 1 Hamilton, grinding out 430 yards on the ground and slowing a Bronc offense that had been averaging 48 points per game coming into the championship game.
It was a win that was in the works ever since the Rams lost against Hamilton by one score, 35-28, in last year's state semifinal.
"That (2017 semifinal), that game changed us. It changed our mentality and how we look at the game," said Billings Central quarterback Joe Byorth, one of 15 upperclassmen on the Rams roster."...We had one common goal between the entire team and we knew we'd achieve it if we trusted each other and stayed together."
Byorth, who finished the game with 228 total yards and 138 yards running the ball, scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown just ten seconds into the fourth quarter. His touchdown, which put Billings Central ahead 28-14 with 11:50 to play, was actually uncharacteristic of the Rams' play all day.
The score came fast. Four plays after the Broncs' fifth punt of the game — Hamilton had punted just 17 times in its 11 previous games — Byorth faked a hand off and followed his blockers up the middle of the field. His 16-yard scamper ended a drive that lasted just 62 seconds.
To compare, the Rams had the ball for over 34 minutes to Hamilton's 13:16.
"The key to our game is always to hang on to the football. We gotta keep it away from those weapons and their quarterback, who is pretty special," said Billings Central coach Jim Stanton. "You saw what happened when they have the ball and start slinging it. We knew coming in we had to control the clock and the ball and we did a pretty good job of that today."
Fortunately for Hamilton, scoring quick has been the Broncs calling card all season.
On the Broncs first drive of the second half, they drove 73 yards on four plays in just 27 seconds to cut into Billings Central's lead, 21-14. The Rams scored on the first possession of the third quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run from Duncan Kraft that capped an eight play, 3 minute drive.
Hamilton's quick score that followed came after a 48-yard run from Michael Golden, a pair of jump-ball passes to Tyler Barnes and 2-yard scoring plunge from quarterback Carson Rostad.
"The kids made some good plays on that drive," Hamilton coach Bryce Carver said. "It's what we've done all year and we were able to capitalize on that drive."
Rostad, who threw for 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns, then found Brock Jones for the 2-point conversion to make it a one score game.
Billings Central's offense droned on, though. Although Byorth had the only Ram score from there, the Rams were able to substantially drain the clock on each subsequent drive. While Central's ensuing drive ended with Hamilton's Tucker Jones blocking a 30-yard field goal, it also ate up nearly 7 minutes of clock.
Kraft, who finished with a game-high 199 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, had a pair of Bronc-crushing third-down conversions on the long series.
"Have you seen those guys? Those guys are studs," Byorth said of his senior running backs Kraft and Jack Studer, who added 86 yards and a score on the ground for the Rams.
Hamilton's playmaking ability kept it in the game until the final two minutes, however. The Broncs were able to thwart a Central fourth-down conversion on Hamilton's 17-yard line with 2:43 remaining, and Rostad and Co. drove the length of the field to pull within one score, 28-21.
Hamilton's junior quarterback converted a pair of fourth downs, one with a 15-yard scramble and another with a 22-yard pass to Barnes that put the Broncs on the 3-yard line.
From there, Rostad hit Michael Golden for a short touchdown pass, affording the 1,500-plus Hamilton fans a few more seconds of belief with 1:10 remaining in the game.
"We were keeping track of the time and we knew we had to be quick," said Barnes, who had a game-high 84 yards receiving. "I thought we put ourselves in a position where we could send it to overtime.
"We just ran out of time"
The Broncs were unable to convert the onside kick, and the next two plays, Byorth and the tough Billings Central run game only had to kneel twice to hand Hamilton its second straight loss in the Class A championship game.
"Credit to Billings Central, they have a great defense," said Carver, whose squad came up one win shy of the perfect season (11-1 overall). "That front three gave us a lot of trouble today and credit to them."
For the Rams, finishing off the undefeated season (12-0), it was their first state title since 2012.

Blue Pony gridders named Central A All-Conference

Havre High junior Mason Dionne was named Central A All-Conference at both running back and linebacker for the 2018 season.
It was a tough season for the Havre High football team as the Blue Ponies went 2-7 in the always difficult Eastern A conference. However, when it comes to postseason honors, the Ponies are still part of the Central A and, following the loss of Lewistown this past weekend, the conference released its All-Conference squad, with plenty of Havre high standouts.
On the offensive side of the ball, Havre had a slew of players who earned All-Conference honors, highlighted by running back Mason Dionne, who was named First-Team in the Central A with 183 rushes for 690 yards and six touchdowns. Dionne also threw for two touchdowns and caught another. The Ponies other First-Team selection on offense was junior tackle Kasee Henderson.
Wide receiver Ethan Roberts earned Second-Team All-Conference honors after a senior season that included 37 receptions for 557 yards and six touchdowns. HHS also had Kellen Detrick at fullback and Quinn Springer on the offensive line make the second team.
On defense, Detrick was the only Pony to earn First-Team honors. The sophomore did so after racking up 33 tackles, three sacks and five tackles for loss. Dionne and senior Caleb Allestad also earned Second-Team All-Conference honors at linebacker. Dionne finished with 39 tackles and two tackles for loss, while Allestad led HHS in tackles with 62, to go along with five tackles for loss. Quinn Springer earned Honorable Mention on defense; Dexter Beck also earned Honorable Mention as an offensive and defensive lineman. Max Olson also was named to the second team as a kicker.
Springer, a junior, put together a solid campaign at defensive end for the Ponies, winding up with 27 tackles, three sacks and four tackles for loss. Beck, a junior also had a stellar first season at the varsity level, notching 26 tackles, a team-high four sacks and five tackles for loss, also a team-high.
Olson finished with season 2-of-4 on field goal attempts, making kicks against Hardin and Sidney. He also went 9-for-9 on extra-point attempts.

Columbia Falls defense stands tall as Wildcats win 1st State A championship

COLUMBIA FALLS – Jaxon Schweikert believed his Columbia Falls football team had the best defense in Class A this season. The Wildcats backed up his claim with another dominant performance in the state championship on Saturday, shutting down Hamilton’s high-powered offense in a 26-14 win.
The Broncs entered the game averaging more than 40 points per game, but Columbia Falls brought in a defense that had allowed a total of just seven points in two previous playoff games.
The Wildcats used a powerful rushing attack to move the ball deep into Hamilton territory and eventually build a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Auguste Emond got Columbia Falls on the board first with a short field goal before Austin Green found Ben Windauer for the game’s first touchdown. That duo hooked up for two scores on the day, helping Columbia Falls win the first State A football championship in school history.
Emond added his second and third field goals of the day in the second quarter, sandwiching Hamilton’s first touchdown. Tyler Chouinard caught a five-yard scoring pass from Carson Rostad to help the Broncs keep the game at a one-score deficit, 16-7, at halftime.
The second half brought more of the same, as Columbia Falls moved the ball seemingly at will to drive deep into Hamilton territory. The Broncs’ defense rose to the occasion, forcing field goal attempts. Emond added his fourth and final field golf of the day in the third quarter to put the Wildcats up 19-7.
Hamilton struggled to find room against the Columbia Falls defense all game, but the Broncs put together a sustained drive to the end the third quarter. On the first play of the fourth, Rostad found Bridger Bauder for a five-yard touchdown, and it was suddenly just a five-point game.
The teams traded possessions, and Columbia Falls – following another fourth-down stop by its defense – surged ahead with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Green to Windauer, who snuck behind the Hamilton defense and scampered in for the score.
From there, the Wildcats’ defense again shut down the Hamilton offense, giving the ball back to Green and Co. Columbia Falls ran out the clock to ice the win and put the finishing touches on a 9-1 season. The Wildcats, who lost in last year’s state championship, allowed only 21 points in three playoff games.
Hamilton, under first-year coach Bryce Carver, finishes the season with a 10-2 record. Both losses came against Columbia Falls.
CLASS A: Columbia Falls 26, Hamilton 14
COLUMBIA FALLS -- For the second straight year, the Columbia Falls Wildcats hosted the Class A State Championship football game.
This time, it didn't get away from them.
Austin Green hit Ben Windauer with a pair of touchdowns, including a 42-yard bomb in the middle of the fourth quarter, and Auguste Emond hit four field goals as the Wildcats earned their first-even state football crown with a 26-14 win over the Hamilton Broncs Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats, completing a 9-1 season, also had the home-field advantage for the 2016 game, but Dillon doubled up on them 34-17.
Green, who completed 12 of his 20 attempts for 153 yards and the two scores, had a short toss to Windauer in the first, after Emond connected on a 22-yard boot for the first tally of the game, and the Wildcats led 10-0 after one. It was a lead they would never relinquish.
Emond would also connect on successful kicks from 29, 32 and 26 yards before Green's long pass to Windauer took the wind right out of the Broncs (10-2).
Green would finish with 157 yards on 27 carries, while Colton McPhee led the way with 182 rushing yards on 28 totes. The Wildcats would amass 522 yards of total offense -- 369 yards on the ground -- while Hamilton was held to 269 total yards.
Carson Rostad threw for 232 yards and two scores in the loss.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Last year, Columbia Falls' Logan Kolodejchuck watched Dillon celebrate a state title on his home field while leaning on crutches.
This Saturday, however, the senior was helping lead his Wildcats in a victory song after beating Hamilton 26-14 in the Class A football championship game. A sizable contingent of the Columbia Falls community surrounded the home team, eager to catch a glimpse of the boys who brought their town its first-ever football crown.
"This time last year I was sitting on the sidelines ... and it was probably the worst feeling I've ever felt," said Kolodejchuck, who had broken his leg late in the year last season. "Coming back (this year), it was just a full revenge tour."
The Wildcats' win started up front — particularly on the defensive line. Not surprisingly, Kolodejchuck, a 6-foot-1, 240-pound dump truck, helped set the tone.
Columbia Falls held Class A's No. 1 offense to just 269 total yards and 14 points. Both numbers represent the Broncs' lowest output this season, as well as Hamilton's 37 yards rushing on 25 carries.
Broncs first-year head coach Bryce Carver said the C. Falls front three, "should be college football players." Columbia Falls coach Jaxon Schweikert had equally high praise.
"Our D-Line we thought was the best in the state from Day 1 with Kyler Koski, Hayden Falkner and Kolodejchuk," the C. Falls skipper said. "Then our inside backers are almost unblockable.
"... We ran the same offense, but we knew our defense was so good if we didn't put them in bad positions people were going to have a really hard time scoring on them."
The Broncs did break through twice on Carson Rostad touchdown passes, though. His second scoring throw went to senior running back Bridger Bauder from 5 yards out. It was the first play of the fourth quarter and pulled Hamilton within five, 19-14.
But Columbia Falls' ground-and-pound was relentless. Even when a drive didn't result in points for the Wildcats, they'd still chew up field position and the clock — both of which happened on Columbia Falls' ensuing possession.
Senior running back Colten McPhee ripped off runs of 5, 12, 9 and 2 yards to move the ball into enemy territory. He finished with a game-best 182 yards on the ground.
Hamilton eventually held, forcing a turnover on downs, but Columbia Falls — which ran for 369 total yards — had chewed up another three minutes of clock.
The Broncs took over on their own 24 and after three plays faced a fourth-and-1. Columbia Falls called on its defensive line to make a stop.
And for the fourth time Hamilton came up about a foot short.
"... Violent hands, violent feet; we were able to just dig deep and stop them," Kolodejchuck said of the eventual five fourth-down stops his defense forced. "... We're the tip of the spear."
The Wildcats reached for the dagger on their next play from scrimmage.
Senior quarterback Austin Green, who had 157 yards rushing, added 42 more yards passing and a touchdown to his go-to wide receiver, Ben Windauer. The C. Falls senior ran a seam down the middle of the field, and the 6-foot-1 senior high-pointed the pass and ran like he had a host of Broncs on his heels.
But Windauer was all alone as he sprinted into the end zone, giving Columbia Falls a 26-14 lead after an Auguste Emond PAT with 6:41 remaining.
"I knew the play, it wasn't designed to go to me, but I motioned to my quarterback; I told him I knew I was going to be open," said Windauer, who also added both a first-quarter touchdown and a diving interception on the second-half's first play from scrimmage. "We've been dreaming about this forever. We knew this was the year, we knew we had the guys."
Those guys included Emond, who connected on four field goals for the Cats. His foot gave Columbia Falls a 3-0 lead, one the Wildcats would never relinquish.
Green's game under center for C. Falls can't be forgotten, either. He accounted for 310 yards of his team's 522 total from scrimmage. A fan grabbed the senior signal-caller by the jersey after the game and thanked him.
He told Green he had waited his entire life to see this.
"This means everything. This town has always been big on their sports, and we couldn't have done this without their support," Green said.
Columbia Falls, which had a game canceled this season due to online threats made against the school district, finished the season 9-1 overall. Its only loss came in a 2016 state title rematch against Dillon in week two, 16-14.
Hamilton wound up 10-2 overall. Both of the Broncs' losses came at the hands of Columbia Falls — the Cats won a Sept. 1 matchup 23-20.
The Broncs had big performances in the loss. Camron Rothie finished with eight catches for 103 yards, while Tyler Chouinard added to his Class A-leading receiving total with 71 yards. Chouinard finished his senior season with 1,333 yards through the air. According to the Montana High School Association record book, that's the second-best total in Montana 11-man football history.
But the Wildcats hoisted the ultimate prize — their first-ever state title trophy.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls came up big when it had to, pulling away from Hamilton in the fourth quarter to win the Class A football state championship game 26-14 on Saturday in front of a raucous home crowd at Satterthwaite Field.
A year after getting run off its own field in the title game, the Wildcats took the game to Hamilton the entire contest. Columbia Falls ran for 369 yards and nearly doubled the Broncs’ output in the game. The Wildcats’ defense forced Hamilton into an interception and made four fourth-down stops in the second half to hold on for its first state title in school history.
“You can’t describe it. It’s the best feeling in the world, I’m so excited,” senior Logan Kolodejchuk said.
“Everybody just dug deep. It came from the bottom of their hearts. We got it done ... It’s the best feeling in the world to come back and show that we’re No. 1.”
Playing with a big cushion for most of the game, Columbia Falls put the game away in the fourth quarter with two big plays.
Defending the Broncs on fourth-and-1 from the Hamilton 43-yard line, Columbia Falls stuffed running back Bridger Bauder in the backfield to get the ball back to its offense. On the next play, senior quarterback Austin Green found senior receiver Ben Windauer behind the defense for a 42-yard touchdown to give the Wildcats a 26-14 lead and put the game out of reach.
“That was a hitch-and-go, actually,” Green said. “Ben read the route a little, his guy was too far outside so he just offed it and ran a post and it was wide open. Props to him on that.”
“Right when the play snapped, I knew I was open going down field,” Windauer said. “I turned my head, saw the ball and knew I had to go up for it. I caught the ball and made it happen.”
“It was unbelieveable, I knew from that moment that it was over,” Green said.
Columbia Falls stopped Hamilton on five plays following the touchdown and ran out the final 5:41 to win the game.
“We knew we were grinding them and they were going to have to commit to (the run) and we were going to take a couple of shots late, try to break the game open late. And it worked,” Columbia Falls coach Jackson Schweikert said.
“That was the whole idea of the game. We have a great offensive line and great running backs and our quarterback is a great runner. Our defense is the best that we’ve had since we’ve been here and every team we’ve played they’ve had a hard time scoring on us. If we didn’t put those guys in bad positions, we felt like Hamilton was going to have a hard time scoring on us. We just kinda controlled the clock and controlled the field position and never put our defense in a bad position. It worked out well for us.”
It is the first championship in three tries for the Wildcats. Columbia Falls lost hosting title games in 1970 and 2016.
Green finished 12 of 20 passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns and had 157 rushing yards. Junior back Colten McPhee had a game-high 182 rushing yards on 28 carries and Windauer finished with five catches for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
“It’s awesome,” Windauer said. “We’ve dreamed of this ever since we were little. It’s finally here. We did it. I’m so proud of my teammates.”
Columbia Falls controlled the game on the ground from the start, rushing nine times for 65 yards on its opening drive, capping it with a 22-yard field goal from Auguste Emond.
Emond, the leading goal scorer on the Wildcats soccer team, carried the team for most of the night, making four of six field goal attempts to help Columbia Falls build a healthy lead despite frequently stalling in the red zone.
“Thank God we have a really good kicker, who just kept drilling them for us,” Schweikert said.
“Usually we’re really good in the red zone. But, you’re in the state championship and those guys (Hamilton) are really good. Hamilton is a really good team. They’re really good defensively and they’re really good offensively. They’re well-coached and they were able to stone us down there. They just put more people in the box and it was hard to punch it in.
“At one point we almost went for a 50-yarder. We were going to go for it, because he can drill them.”
After forcing Hamilton to a three-and-out on its first possession, Columbia Falls turned to the run game again, rushing the ball nine straight plays to the Hamilton 3-yard line. The Wildcats caught the Broncs off guard, springing their first pass of the game from the goal line, Green connecting with Windauer on a sprint out to the flat for an easy touchdown and a 10-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.
Columbia Falls stalled at the Hamilton 15 on its next drive and missed a field goal, then settled for field goals on its next two drives before half.
Hamilton found space in the middle of the Wildcats defense late in the second quarter, Carson Rostad finding Camron Rothie for a 41-yard pass to advance inside the Columbia Falls 10. The Broncs scored two plays later to cut their halftime deficit to 16-7.
The Wildcats intercepted Rostad on the first play of the second half but couldn’t capitalize, stalling again at the Hamilton 6 and missing a short field goal. Columbia Falls forced a fumble on Hamilton’s next drive but couldn’t recover, instead stopping the Broncs on fourth down. Columbia Falls had another fourth down stop on defense before Emond’s fourth field goal of the afternoon gave the Wildcats a 19-7 lead.
Hamilton scored on its next drive, as Bauder got free on a wheel route inside the Wildcats 5 and hauled in a wide-open score to cut the lead to 19-14.
Columbia Falls stalled in Hamilton territory again on its next drive but came up with the big stop on Hamilton four plays later to set up Windauer’s sealing touchdown.
“In every big game it always comes down to four or five plays,” Schweikert said. “You never knew when those plays are going to come.
“We stopped them enough on fourth-and-short, that was some big plays. Thank goodness for having a great D-line and great linebackers.”
The Wildcats have slowly been building towards this since Schweikert took over in 2012. Since then, the Wildcats have won the Northwest conference twice times and made it to state title games in back-to-back seasons, setting a slew of state records in the process.
“It’s big. Moreso for me, it’s huge for our some of our coaches that have been here for 20 years. It’s huge for this community,” Schweikert said.
“They had really great coaches here and really great kids. They do a great job. I’m just kind of an organizer. I get everybody pointed in the right direction and all these coaches just work so hard for it. It’s pretty amazing to see what they’ve accomplished.”
