SMBL Pick-up Run and Registration

This is a reminder that we'll have another pick-up run tonight to prepare for the season, which we will schedule to start on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, and will run until early April 2025.

We will start taking registrations tonight, which can be paid by cheque or in cash, or by Interac e-transfer. This season's league fee will be $350, and will cover 18 regular season games plus playoffs, and includes a league jersey. Waiver forms will also be available to sign at the gym tonight.

If you have not yet completed it, the league survey is still available at https://forms.gle/CEmfwsXXp38AhL7N6 -- please fill it in, as we are using it to gather important information for balancing the teams and getting the jersey sizes.

Hope to see you all at the gym tonight!

For the Committee,

Andrew

In Memoriam: Calvin Smith (1960-2024)

October 8, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, last Tuesday, of Calvin Smith, who played in the SMBL for many years.

League Convenor Basil Mangano had the following to say, in remembrance of Calvin:
"This is indeed a very sad day for Scarborough Masters Basketball.
Calvin Smith was the epitome of everything we love and what’s great about our corner of the basketball community. Calvin, who played in our Over 40 league, and then our Over 50 league, which then evolved into our Over 55 league, was a unique athlete, who towered with his skill, speed, smarts, leadership, competitiveness, and his fraternity for his fellow ball players. Seeing Calvin always brought a smile and even a sense of comfort to the proceedings.
Calvin belonged among us.

He was a great leader and won many championships, and a few MVP’s of the season and playoffs.

Even when Calvin was unable to play, he supported our league, and encouraged new players that he knew would fit in, to sign up and join the league. Calvin seemed to know everyone, and was the person who continued  to be connected to ex-ball-players going back many decades, even back to the other great leagues of the 1970s and early '80s, like The Pape  Basketball League, George Brown League. etc.

Calvin led all the teams he played on. He was feisty, never backing down from a challenge, and was inexhaustible. He had a motor that never slowed down and boy, was he quick... and talk about hops! Calvin could get up there better than anyone his size and bigger, even throughout his 50s!

He loved to see the boys, and was always involved in reunions and get-togethers. Calvin always stayed in touch. Friendship was not a loose term when it came to Cal. Such a wonderful guy, and we were all better for having known him.

Calvin Smith was truly a good one, and he will be sorely missed. And, of course, Calvin will definitely reside in the Scarborough Masters Basketball Hall of Fame."

Visitation will take place on Friday, October 18 at the Simple Alternative Centre, 1057 Brock Road in Pickering, from 6 pm to 9 pm. A service will be held on Saturday, October 19 at Revivaltime Tabernacle, 550 Kingston Road, also in Pickering; viewing at 9 am with service to follow at 10 am.

On behalf of the League, I offer my sincere condolences to Calvin's family and friends, and would like to echo Basil's remarks in saying what a pleasure it was to have met him and to have seen him play. May he now rest in peace.

For the Committee,
Andrew

April 26, 2023

Hi, everyone!

We hope to see as many players and fans as possible, including those from other teams to cheer these contenders on... and, of course, to gather afterwards to celebrate a successful return to play this season and our eventusl champions.

See you at the gym!

Hi, all.

This is a reminder that the playoffs begin tonight, with the two semifinals:

Gym A (North): Team D (Green) vs Team A (Light Blue)

We hope to see as many players as possible out tonight!

In memoriam - Joe Braunstein (1957-2023)

February 1, 2023

The SMBL is very sad to announce the passing last Friday of longtime member Joe Braunstein.

SMBL Convenor Basil Mangano had the following message for the League:

Hi there guys, I’m in a lit bit of shock in sending out this [message].

As most of you are aware last week we lost a good friend and former bball player Basil Toussaint. Today, I am very sad to announce that we’ve just lost our great friend and fellow Masters League player, Joe Braunstein.

Joe and twin brother Tony have been mainstays in the Scarborough Masters Basketball League for, it seems, decades. Joe was a great teammate, a wonderful guy, always hard-working in everything he did, and so full of energy. Like brother Tony, Joe was built like an Adonis, with a motor that never stopped. Joe and Tony would grab a million rebounds and then would lead the fast break, beating almost everyone to the other end of the court.

Joe was such a nice guy, always friendly with everyone, and still could be tough as nails; just a great athlete and a really good man. Joe Braunstein is going to be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of playing with, and getting to know him.

The obituary for Joe is linked here. Thank you to George Awrey for passing along the information. Should we become aware of any details on arrangements, this article will be updated.

Our condolences go to Joe’s wife, children, brother Tony and their extended families.

GAME ON! Please help keep our gym clean

November 16, 2022

Hi, all.

The 2022-23 SMBL season resumes tonight after an unscheduled one-week break. The current plan is to add last week's game to the end of the regular season.

Since it appears that winter is upon us, please remember to carry your gym shoes into the building and put them on before entering the gym. Please do not wear wet footwear into the gym!

This helps keep the gym floors clean and dry, and thus safer for play.

We look forward to seeing you at the gym tonight.

31st SMBL Season Starts Tonight!

The long-awaited return of Scarborough Masters Basketball begins tonight!

The gyms will open at 8 pm, with games scheduled to start at 8:15 pm, at Sir John A. Macdonald C.I. (west side of Pharmacy, between Sheppard and Finch).

Schedules and teams will be posted here shortly, but have been communicated to players via the email list. If you still need this information, please email us at scarbmasters@gmail.com.

Hope to see everyone there!

August 10, 2022

Hello, everyone!

We are pleased to announce that the Scarborough Masters Basketball League is planning to return to play this fall!

We are continuing under the leadership of Basil Mangano, with assistance from both Demo Aliferis and myself (although more help is always welcome — many hands make light work!).

Further details about the league will be shared in due course.

As always, we welcome new members 55 years and older to our recreational men's basketball league. We play Wednesday evenings (8:15 pm) at Sir John A Macdonald C.I. in Scarborough (Pharmacy, between Sheppard and Finch). Please email us at scarbmasters@gmail.com. You may have been contacted already regarding your interest in playing this season, but if we have not yet heard from you, or you are interested, we would love to hear from you.

Please enjoy the rest of your summer, stay safe, and we hope to see you soon!

For the Committee,

Andrew Huntley
