2018

5/28/18 - Memorial Day Monday on the turf at La Salle after a Sunday rainout.  Cloudy and humid, Dave Dorn on the mound for the Homes, Bill Belt dealing for the Aways.  Terry's RBI single in the top of the first put the Aways up, Paul Fallon's RBI in the bottom of the first would tie it 1-1.  Roger and Gilbert would get on in the Homes second, Roger would score on the John O sac fly, then 2 more would score on the Rob Aronson triple.  Dave D added an RBI single and the Homes led 5-1 after two.  Matt T and Rob D would drive in 3 of the Aways' 4 runs in the third inning to tie it up again.  Nick B drove in Gilbert in the home half of the fourth and that would be the last run scored by the Homes for 6 innings.  Pitcher Bill Belt and Bruce L drove in two of the Aways' 3 runs in the fifth and then their own offensive drought started.  John O ended the Homes scoreless streak with an RBI single in the eighth, then Rob Aronson stroked a triple with a dangerous hop and scored on a Dave D single.  Bill Belt helped his own cause with an insurance RBI in the top of the twelfth and final inning as the Aways plated 3.  In the bottom of the twelfth, the Swirsding Show kicked off with a horizontal diving stab on a laser in the hot corner to make the second out for the Aways.  Then, an encore.  Another diving catch by 3B Swirsding stopped yet another possible extra-base rally starter by the Homes.  Defensive fireworks shut this one down in twelve innings as the Aways pick up the road win, 14-9.

6/10/18 - It took the Home team until the seventh inning to put a run on the board while the Aways built up an early lead they thought might be safe.  In the bottom of the first, leadoff pitcher Bill Belt got on, followed by a Terry single, and both scored on a Matt T home run putting the Homes up 3.  In the bottom of the third, Don Camera drove in an RBI single followed by Bill Belt's RBI double.  Matt T would add a solo shot in the fourth as the Homes moved up 6-0.  Terry would add an RBI single in the fifth.  The Aways officially started their comeback in the top of the seventh with Roger's RBI single followed by Rob Aronson's RBI single and Randy's 2 run single.  Frank would drive in 2 more, then Roger would have his second RBI single of the inning, followed by a 2 run Dante single narrowing the Away deficit to a run.  In the top of the eighth, Roger added his third RBI single of the day followed by a 2 run Dante single as the Aways took the lead 9-7.  With a narrow lead in the ninth, the Aways poured it on as Rob A laced an RBI single, followed by Randy's 2 run single, followed by Paul's 2 run double then John O's RBI single.  Down 15-8 in the bottom of the twelfth, the Homes sent Terry to the plate who reached base on a fielder's choice and moved up on Dave Dorn's double to the left field wall, both then scoring on the Matt T homer but the Aways stifled the attempted Home comeback and pick up the victory, 15-11.

6/17/18 - Sweltering sun and humidity for Fathers Day.  Dante belted 4 singles and a triple while Frank drove in 3 for the Homes.  It was the Aways' big second inning that blew this one open.  Dave D and Rick drove in 4 for the top of the Aways order.  Matt T and Brian O combined for 8 RBI with Roger tossing in an RBI double for good measure.  Rob Dorn poured in a couple doubles and the Aways were too much on this scorcher winning 18-7 with some fireworks from Brian O, different from his regular kind, and a rare SMB statistic acquired by Aways RF Lou Petrone and Allison Dorn: the save.  Combined Save and Game MVP goes to Lou and Allison.

6/24/18 - Slightly less hot than last week but no less sunny for a Harbison / Minsker pitching duet.  Tied at 14-14 after ten innings, barns could be smelled burning in the distance.  Rob A's 6 singles came from the Homes' leadoff slot.  Rick and Randy both chipped in 2 singles and a double, Rick's double driving in 2 runs for the Homes.  Jim M and Paul both also stroked RBI doubles, but it was Paul's bases-clearing 3 run double in the tenth that tied the game in a big spot.  Meanwhile, the Aways scored more than 1 run in more than half of the innings in which they batted.  Bill Belt at the top of the Aways order offered 5 singles, a double and 2 RBI.  Dave Dorn followed up with 3 doubles, 2 singles and 3 RBI.  Matt T followed with 6 singles and a low homer for 8 RBI, followed by Frank driving in a pair and Don Camera ripping into the ball for 3 singles, a double and a SAC RBI.  John S, John O, Lou P and Dominic M, in his SMB debut, combined for 10 singles in the second half of the Aways' order.  Youngster Dominic was steady and solid at 2B for the Aways but it was CF Dave Dorn who created a black hole in the Aways outfield where a multitude of would-be gappers were tracked down and snuffed out.  Bill, Dave and Matt drive in 3 runs in a row in the top of the extra thirteenth inning to break the tie and secure the Aways victory, 17-14.

7/29/18 - Chef Paul Fallon cooked up the teams for a well attended warm weather matchup to close out July.  Paul's concoction ended up a barnburner, tied at the end of seven innings.  Rob A led off for the Aways with the first of his 6 singles on the day, adding a pair of RBI doubles in the late innings.  Rob would score the first of his 6 total runs on Swirsding's RBI double in the opening frame.  The Homes would roar back in the bottom of the first on Rick's single, Paul's double, Don Camera's RBI single, and back-to-back RBI doubles to the wall by John and Mike.  For the Homes, Rick and Randy combined for 7 hits and scored 6 runs.  Paul would finish with 2 doubles and 4 singles and the bottom half of the Homes order would drive in a combined 8 runs.  The Aways managed more crooked numbers per inning, on Swirsding's 5 RBI day and the bottom of the Away order: Roger and Bruce Love both chipped in 4 hits and scored 3 runs while Max punished the ball, cranking 6 singles and a 2R double on the day.  The Aways plate 10 runs in the final 4 innings of a 12 inning contest, winning 19-11.

8/26/18 - The Aways showed up on a nice day ready to play and roughed up the Homes along the way.  Aways took a chance by trying Rob A in the leadoff slot but the gamble paid off as he racked up 5 singles and 2 doubles, driving in 3 and scoring 5.  Dante backed him up with 3 more RBI and finished a homer shy of the cycle.  Randy drove in a SAC fly 3 times and Miguel scored 5 runs in his SMB debut.  For the Homes, Bill Belt also finished a homer shy of the cycle while Paul Fallon cranked the very homer Bill was looking for with a 2 run shot on a 3 RBI day.  Homes couldn't mount a comeback so Aways walk away, 22-8.

9/2/18 - Labor Day Double Header Game 1:  Kevin Fallon came out firing for the Aways with 2 singles and a double on a 3 RBI day.  Dante and Don C had 3 hits a piece while Mark and Rob A both stroked 4.  The bottom of the Homes lineup made a splash in the bottom of the first with a 5 run rally.  Terry and John O sprayed 3 hits each, as did John Swirsding who played an entire game after taking a comebacker to the dome during BP.  He cleaned off the blood and got on base 3 times, scoring twice as part of the Roger / Jack / Dr. Lou 6 RBI bonanza.  Specifically, Roger and Lou's RBIs in the ninth put this one away as the Homes win Game 1 in ten innings, 10-7.

Game 2 Monday:  Homes couldn't keep Rob A off base during another 6 hit day.  Terry mixed singles and doubles to produce 2 RBI for the Aways while Randy added 2 of his own.  In the Home fourth, Roger and Brian S got back to back base hits followed by a Bill Belt single to load the bases.  Don Camera cleared them with a 3R double but that was the lone highlight for the Homes in Game 2.  Jim L and Rob A add 2 more in the Away ninth to lock up Labor Day Game 2 for the Aways, 13-9.

9/16/18 - At the end of the eighth it was a certified barnburner with the Aways leading 9-8.  Leading off for the Aways, Bill Belt cranked a pair of doubles, 4 singles and a triple.  Bruce Leto followed with 6 singles and an RBI.  Randy drove in a pair while Terry launched a ball to the shadows in dead center on one of his 2 doubles on a 6 RBI day.  Don, Lou and John S all drove in a run a piece and John S drove 3 balls into left that were tracked down by John O, similar to how Homes SS Matt T drove three in a row into Bill Belt's glove in right center.  It was a crazy ninth that busted it open.  Matt T was on base when Paul Fallon sailed one down the line and over the right field fair pole for a 2R HR.  Rick, Jim L and Rob A all singled, John O ripped a liner too hot to handle so bases stayed loaded and were unloaded next on the Matt T grand slam.  The tenth inning was another productive one for the Homes as Roger, Jack and Jim L all singled, followed by a Rob A SAC, a 2R John O double and then a 2R Matt T double.  Big at the end, Homes win it 18-9.
