2019
4/14/19 - Humid and cloudy for the first full game at Haverford. Randy drove in Rob and Bruce L drove in Paul to put the Aways up 2 in the top of the first. Homes answered in the bottom with 3, one of which was driven in by John Swirsding. Aways stayed feisty and plated 3 more in the second with an RBI double by Rob. Dale and Paul each added an Away RBI in the third as the Aways moved ahead 7-4 but with 2 outs Kevin Fallon roped an opposite field gapper that would have driven runners in except for the fact that Bryce made a legitimate diving stab at full gallop to squash the rally and shift the momentum. Hyped from Bryce's catch, Matt T, Rick, and John S drove in a run each in a 4 run Home fourth. Dante tacked on 2 more in the Home sixth with the first SMB home run of the season, a 2 run blast. With 3 across in the seventh, Jack and Jim L drove in a run a piece to round out the 5 run inning. Homes close it out after 10 innings, 16-9.
4/28/19 - Grey and damp for a defensive masterpiece with a rain delay. The Homes fired line drives at the Aways but Jim L and Kevin F reached for and made difficult putouts. The Homes CF Rick Tull answered in the third by robbing Dante of a solo homer at the right-center field fence. Bill Belt shone bright at the top of the Homes lineup with 4 singles in a row followed by a double but he was not followed immediately in the batting order by much run support. Aways drew blood in the third with a 2R Swirsding single and an RBI single from Kevin Fallon but the Aways never plated a run after the that. The second half of the Homes order carried the scoring load as Bruce L and Roger drove in a run a piece while Rick H drove in a pair. High drama in the bottom of the twelfth as the Homes came to the plate down a run. Don Camera ripped a leadoff single then scored on the Rick Tull opposite field blast off the right field fence. With 2 outs and Rick on third, Matt T avoids the 0-for on the day with a dribbler through the gap for the GWRBI single. Homes win on a walkoff, 6-5.
5/19/19 - Sunny and increasingly hot at Haverford for a contest that was tied 1-1 after four innings. Minsker concocted the teams then pitched 22 consecutive half-innings in the heat. In the top of the fifth, Rob Dorn launched a line drive with a tail that made it to the deep right center field wall for a standup triple. Dr. Lou would drive Rob D in, then John O reached base and scored on the Matt T 2R HR as the Aways managed their first crooked number inning total of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Dante answered for the Homes with a solo homer. Rick would single in the seventh and Dave Dorn would drive him in for another run for the Homes. In the top of the sixth, in the midst of stroking 5 singles and 2 doubles on the day, Rob A would tally an RBI as part of a 4 run Aways rally. The Homes struck hard in the bottom of the ninth plating 4 runs, 2 of which came on Rick's 2R double, as the Homes narrowed the deficit to a single run. The Aways responded with a 6 run tenth inning, the final run coming on Paul's RBI single. Dante would double in the tenth and then score but that was the only run for the Homes in the inning as the Aways wrap up the victory, 15-9.
5/27/19 - The Memorial Day Classic, sunny and steamy at Haverford. The Aways came out swinging with The Dorn Boys at the top of the lineup as Rob D drove in a pair of runs on one of his 2 doubles and Dave D stroked a 3 run homer to left. Bruce L would hit a 3R homer of his own while Dante tagged a solo shot onto the Aways tally. The Homes fell silent in the middle innings but caught fire late behind Bob C's 3 doubles and a triple for a 4 RBI day. But it was Rick T's outburst in his final 2 at bats that gave the Homes the edge as he launched back to back solo bombs (first and second SMB career homers) to compliment his earlier 2R double. John O added a late RBI triple to give the Homes a 3 run lead in the final frame. Bruce L would drive in one of the 2 Aways runs in the twelfth as the lead narrowed to a single run with a runner on second. Dante would fly out on a liner to Marc Moretti in right who fired a strike to double up the runner tagging and advancing to third to end the game as the Homes win a tight one, 18-17.
6/2/19 - Rob A and John S provided a rapid fire attack for the Aways combining for 15 hits on the day while Rob A gobbled up would-be extra base hits in left center. The Homes got on the board in the second as Bob C launched his first SMB homer, a solo laser to left. Dante spiced things up in the ninth with 2 runners on and a 1 run Home deficit as he deposited a ball over the scoreboard for a 3 run bomb and a one run lead. Brian S would stroke a 2 run double in the tenth to extend the Home lead to 3 runs. Jim L would answer for the Aways in the eleventh, driving in a run on a FC to cut the Home lead to a run. In the top of the twelfth, Matt T and John S managed an RBI single a piece to give the Aways a 2 run lead. An infield putout and 2 more line drive put outs by Rob A in center in the twelfth locked up the narrow Away win, 9-8.
6/23/19 - Sunny and pleasant at Haverford. The Homes came out firing as they plated 7 runs in the bottom of the first, 2 runs coming from a Don Camera double. The Aways answered in the second with a 7 run inning of their own featuring an RBI single and a 3R triple from Bob C in 2 plate appearances in the inning. The teams traded blows in a high scoring contest with Bob C driving in 7 RBI on the day for the Aways and Don C driving in 6 for the Homes. The Aways exploded with a 6 run ninth and final inning and took a 20-17 lead into the bottom of the ninth. In his SMB debut, Gerry T stroked a 2 run double for the Homes and was followed by a Dante SAC and a Don Camera RBI single as the Homes win it 21-20 on the Don C walkoff RBI.
7/14/19 - Sunny and hot but only enough players for a 3 outfielder game with Rob A playing steady CF for both sides. The Aways jumped out to a huge lead with 6 base hits in a row to start the first inning followed by a Dave Dorn grand slam and a Dante 2R homer to give the Aways a comfortable 9-0 lead that they would not relinquish. The Homes would manage to score 8 runs on the day but with Dante tacking on 3 more home runs, the Aways win it going away 19-8 in 8 sweltering innings.
7/28/19 - Perfect weather with a nice turnout for ten innings. With a runner on base in the first, Anthony L launched a ball to the deepest part of center field and motored around the bases for his first inside-the-park home run. Terry's fihrst at bat after a long layoff would result in a standup triple for the Homes. Rob A would add 7 hits and 3 RBI to the Home effort. For the Aways, Rob D fired strikes from center field to get multiple force outs at second base in addition to his 3 doubles at the plate. Matt T would drive in 8 for the Aways and they would take a 1 run lead into the bottom of the tenth and final inning. Leading off in the bottom of the tenth, Bob Clements' solo shot to left field would tie it up for the Homes. With 2 outs, Rob A would single and then score the GWRBI on the Dave Dorn walkoff SAC as the Homes win the close one, 20-19.
8/4/19 - Aways ran away with it immediately as they scored 11 in the first. 4 RBI from Rob D, 6 from Dave D including a grand slam, 4 from Dante with 2 homers, and 3 from Bob C with a homer combined for a 21-6 victory for the Aways.
8/11/19 - The temperature cooled but the bats got hot for a slugfest at Haverford. Matt M led off with a single in his first SMB at bat and trotted home on Anthony L's 2 run homer in the top of the first. Austin answered in the second with his first SMB home run and was followed 2 batters later by Dante who added a 2 run shot as part of a 5 run Home second inning. Dante would add a solo homer in the third. In a big sixth inning for the Aways, Matt M launched his first SMB home run, a 3 run shot to right, part of a 5 run inning. Tied in the ninth, Bob C ripped a solo homer and Brian S drove in a run to give the Homes an 11-9 lead. The Aways rallied for 4 in the eleventh to take a 2 run lead, the second run coming on an opposite field Jim L liner to right. Paul F added the second and final insurance run in the twelfth with a SAC fly to give the Aways 15-11 lead. In the bottom of the twelfth with 2 on, Terry sent a shot to the wall scoring 2. The Aways clamped down to preserve the win after 12 full innings, 15-13.
9/1/19 - The first game of September featured a surplus of players and perfect weather. It was a low scoring affair with no real blowout innings as both teams clamped down defensively. The Aways saved their scoring for the final 3 innings but the Homes got into it immediately as Matt T and Matt M drove in a run each to put the Homes up 2-0 after the first. Same scenario in the third as Rob A and Dave D got on base and scored on the Matt T triple and then Matt M stroked an RBI single to give the Homes 3 more in the third. Don Camera would rip a 2R single in the eighth to put the Homes up 7-1. Bob C and Anthony L would get the Aways going in the tenth with an RBI single each. Down 9-4 in the top of the twelfth with Bob C and Paul F on base, Anthony launched a 2 run double to narrow the gap and put heat on the Home lead. Anthony would then score on the Joe Jr triple that went to the deepest part of center field, bringing the Aways to within 2. With the tying run at the plate, Don Camera would cap off a brilliant defensive performance on the mound with one more 1-3 putout to lock up the Home victory, 9-7.
9/8/19 - With cloudy skies and an early low turnout things looked grim, but as the sun came out so did enough players for a 12 inning game. Jim L had the first RBI for the Aways while Ricky T drove in the first run for the Homes. With Dave D on base in the third, Dante clobbered a 2R homer, then in the fourth Anthony laced a 2 run double to put the Homes up 5-2. The Aways answered with a big sixth as Jette and Rob A both singled then were driven in by Paul and Jack, respectively. Ricky, Dave D and Dante would each drive in a run for the Homes in the bottom of the twelfth to narrow the gap but too much damage had already been done in the top of the twelfth by the Aways' final plate appearance. Rob Dorn started the twelfth for the Aways with his third double of the day, followed by Jack's fifth single, Jim L's 2nd RBI, Jette's double, Bruce L's RBI single and Matt T's grand slam. Four more runs by the Homes in the bottom of the last were not enough as the Aways win it 19-11.
