Ice hockey is not a PIAA recognized sport, and does not receive funding from the school district. Therefore, players’ families are responsible for baring all the expenses associated with the sport (ice time, equipment, coaches and referee fees, and travel expenses). Ice time alone is upwards of $20,000 per season.
Due to this expense coupled with the small size of our community, the Palmyra Ice Hockey Club’s roster is smaller than most of our competitors. Our goal is to
afford every child who wants to play ice hockey the opportunity to participate and have competitive teams in doing so .
We hope this will become a Thanksgiving Day tradition for you and our community.

It's Good To Be (Dustin) Stuck
Palmyra's Dustin Stuck, right, battles Hershey's Tom Palmer, for the ball - (CHRIS KNIGHT, The Patriot-News, 2009)
Even as a junior, the only better all-around athlete at Palmyra Area High School than Dustin Stuck is possibly his teammate in soccer and hockey, senior Brian Mundy.
While both excel in those sports, Stuck is a projected three-year starter in baseball, while Mundy opts for lacrosse in the spring.
What separates Stuck from the rest is the fact he has started and earned varsity letters in each sport since the ninth grade. If he chose to run track, he could probably do the decathlon.
He considers baseball his favorite sport, but counts the Detroit Red Wings and former star Steve Yzerman as his favorite team and athlete.
Much of his love for hockey comes from his relationship with the Hershey Bears, for whom his dad, Dan "Beaker" Stuck serves as head trainer.
"Dusty," as his dad calls him, helps out in the Bears' training room and with the equipment, while being seen but not often heard. Stuck doesn't say much.
"You've got a good choice as your athlete of the week," said Bears president and general manager Doug Yingst, a former Palmyra standout in football, hockey and baseball. "Dustin's a great kid."
Between stints with his CPIHL Tier I Palmyra hockey team, Stuck also hits the ice occasionally with the pros.
"I get to skate with them sometimes," he said. "I was on the ice this morning with them."
In soccer, Stuck was a standout left back on defense. Coach Craig Tyrrell seldom had to worry about that position. He scored just one goal, but nearly scored a memorable goal in a 3-2 OT win at Elco.
With the score tied 2-2, Cougar forward Brett Jankouskas hit a shot that caromed off the crossbar. The rebound went to Stuck, who was overlapping on the right. With his back to the goal, Stuck hit a bicycle kick over his head that also struck the crossbar and bounced away.
"Wow, what a shot," said his dad. "Where did that shot come from? I didn't even know he had that shot."
Natural ability, dad.

Palmyra CPIHL Coach Brent Burgard Has Cup in Mind
Palmyra bounced back from a recent 8-1 loss to CPIHL Tier 1 leader Cumberland Valley to knock off Lampeter-Strasburg 4-1, evening its record at 5-5-1 for the season.
Before losing to CV, however, the Cougars tied Hershey 3-3 on a Dustin Stuck hat trick to account for the season's highlight to this point.
First-year coach Brent Burgard, a close friend of Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau, sees only good things ahead for the Palmyra ice hockey program.
"We entered the season with the goal to legitimately challenge the league for a run to the Bears Cup," he said. "The most remarkable thing about this team is that we have only one player that currently plays travel hockey, unlike other schools that have many."
The Cougars are led by senior captain Brian Mundy, who also played a major role as defensive midfielder on the Palmyra boys' 25-2 soccer team that reached the state semifinals. His assistant captains are Dustin Stuck, a three-sport junior standout at Palmyra in soccer and baseball, Andrew Beamenderfer and Mario Benicky.
Stuck leads the team in scoring with 17 goals and 11 assists for 28 points through 11 games, followed by Benicky with 16 goals and 10 assists for 26 points, and Beamenderfer at 7-17-24.
Burgard said he has a good feel for this group of players.
"Our leading scorer is Dustin Stuck," he said. "I've had the pleasure of coaching Dustin along with several other members of this team since they were in sixth grade. Dustin has been a leader each year along the way."
Burgard started coaching Palmyra six years ago at the junior high level and followed the players closely as they grew older. He's grown fond of this team, particularly Stuck, our athlete of the week.
In goal, the Cougars have another key member of the Palmyra soccer team, Josh Lineaweaver, who is 5-3-1 through 10 games in net with a goals against average of 4.80. Other key members of the team are Nathan Beamenderfer and Tommy Miller.
In the 4-1 win over L-S, goals came from Stuck (2), Andrew Beamenderfer and Ian McKenna.
In the offseason, Burgard spends much of his time coaching and learning more about hockey.
"My background is that I am a USA Hockey Level 5 Master coach," he said, "and have various other certifications including the Mitron Hockey system. In addition, I have coached various youth hockey teams in the Lancaster and Hershey areas."
During the summer, Burgard is an on-ice instructor for Boudreau's Golden Horseshoe Hockey School. His major coaching influences, he says, are Bourdreau and Al MacCormack, both of whom he considers friends and fine teachers of the game.

Palmyra Could Make A Run At Bears Cup
Thursday, January 07, 2010
BY JEFF DEWEES jdewees@patriot-news.com
The Palmyra Cougars started the New Year in fine fashion this week when they upended a fine Red Land squad 7-4 on Monday night.
Under the guidance of longtime program coach but first-year varsity head man Brent Burgard, the Cougars evened their mark at 4-4-0 with that win over the Patriots -- a team that sits in third place in the Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League Tier I standings.
"It was just an awesome game," Burgard said. "Every line we had, start to finish, played its game. It was a team effort. Our goaltending was better than [it's] been, and we were strong from our backline to front." Palmyra is loaded with talent on offense but continues to fly under the radar a bit.
That would change if Burgard and Co. can beat Hershey Friday night. The backyard tussle is slated for a 7 p.m. faceoff at the old barn, Hersheypark Arena.
"My expectation when I took over this summer was to win the Bears Cup," Burgard said. "It's a tough one. And some people might chuckle. But that's our goal. I know a lot of organizations in our area have kind of counted Palmyra out for years, because it's always been, in their opinion, 'they don't really know how to play the game, they just like to play the game.'"
Burgard believes the team is beginning to find its form at the right time after an unsettled start. Four key members of the hockey club -- forwards Dustin Stuck and Thomas Miller, defenseman Brian Mundy and starting goalie Josh Lineaweaver -- played on Palmyra's soccer PIAA semifinalists, going straight from the pitch to the ice without a break in November. They missed three games.
"Cohesiveness," was Bugard's reply to a question about the biggest difference in his club now. "A lot of teamwork and camaraderie. Guys are starting to understand their roles on this team. I'm a coach who preaches role hockey, and that's how we have to play the game."
Soccer shape is not hockey shape, with the things expected of you playing the latter drawing a red card playing the former. So the adjustment took a while to take root.
"Josh said going from a soccer to a hockey goalie was like going from trying to stop a beach ball to trying to stop a golf ball," Bugard said.
"But give credit to the players who started the season. We had one game against Boyertown where we skated nine players and a goalie that didn't have a lick of [varsity] ice hockey experience. That game was 1-0, them, in the second period before we ran out of gas.
"Once we got those kids back, we were able to match lines better."
Burgard likes to play a wide-open style, what he termed "Canadian shootout hockey."
It seems to fit the talents of his personnel. Junior center Stuck, the son of Hershey Bears head trainer Dan "Beaker" Stuck, is second on the club with 22 points, on 11 goals and 11 assists. Stuck trails only freshman lamp-lighter Mario Benicky [16 goals, 8 assists] in scoring. Benicky is a name Burgard thinks we should remember.
"I've been around the game for a long time," Burgard said, "and this kid's the real deal. He's a complete player. He's really putting it on the line every night."
Hershey Gets Stuck
Saturday, January 09, 2010
BY JEFF DEWEES jdewees@patriot-news.com
Palmyra hockey head coach Brent Burgard knew Friday night's CPIHL Tier I game against the Hershey Trojans would be a measuring stick for his up-and-coming program.
So how exactly do you measure a tie?
Center Dustin Stuck's power play goal with 1:51 left in the game allowed Palmyra to depart Hersheypark Arena with a 3-3 tie against Hershey. The clutch man-up putback off a rebound gave Stuck a hat trick. All three came on power plays.
Burgard had a grade in mind. "I give us an A-minus," he said. "The only thing we didn't do well enough was forecheck in their zone on our second and third lines, and our backcheck was a little weak in the second period. Outside of that, I think we played a pretty decent game.
"We came to win right from the start, and I think you could see it ... we'll take the tie, it's a point in the standings. But, of course, we would have loved to have [won] this game."
Stuck seemed to understand the magnitude of the moment. "It was one of the best moments of my hockey career," he said. "I saw the [initial] shot, and I knew a rebound was coming because it was along the ice. So I stood in front of the net and it happened to come onto my stick and I put it in."
The official scoresheet shows Andrew Beamenderfer picking up an assist on Stuck's equalizer.
You could credit an inadvertent secondary assist to Hershey's student cheering section.
Brooks Lewis broke a 2-2 tie with 2:48 to play when his wrist shot beat Palmyra goalie Josh Lineaweaver.
Celebrating Hershey students, sitting in the lower bowl near the end boards, unfurled orange-and-blue streamers onto the ice.
The Trojans (8-2-1, 17 points) were slapped with a bench minor for delay of game. And Stuck made them pay.
Under the discretion given on-ice officials, they got it right. But Hershey coach Tom Malloy saw things through a different prism.
"My problem is, they don't let kids be kids," Malloy said, not of the officials but of league rules that, in his opinion, dampen enthusiasm. "The kids come here to enjoy the game. That certainly is not anything malicious. They're having fun as far as I'm concerned."
Hershey had to withstand a blistering attack from Palmyra (4-4-1, 9 points) in the first period.
Sophomore netminder Gage Cvijic did everything but stand on his head to keep the match scoreless by turning away 12 Palmyra shots in a period dominated by the something-to-prove Cougars.
"Gage did a wonderful job," Malloy said. "He plays with good positioning and stopped their flurries. They came at us like bees, and he stood tall."
Hershey's Jonnie Nolan opened the scoring 1:31 into the second period on rebound goal.
Stuck scored his first late in the stanza on a wrister that beat Cvijic stick side, then gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead with 11:43 to play on a stuffer in front of the net.
The Trojans tied it at 2-2 on the power play with 6:58 left, on Todd Warden's deflection of a Scott Lang slap shot from the point.
