Lance participated in Cross-Country and Track & Field while attending Waiakea High School. He made the state qualifying team his senior year. Lance focused on the following events when he was in high school: 400m sprint, the middle distance 800m race, 4x100 and 4x400m relays, and the high jump. Lance continued to run competitively in road races from the 5K to the marathon distances after his high school years.

Upon returning from attending college in the mainland, he and his wife, MJ Tominaga, went on to coach at their alma mater Waiakea High School, then at Keaau High School for several years, and finally made their way back coaching at Waiakea High for the past 4 years. Hence, Lance has over 10 years of Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) experience in coaching cross-country and track & field. He also earned coach of the year in 2011 for leading the WHS boys team to a BIIF Championship title after a stint of almost 12 years without a championship.

Lance, along with his wife, chose to step down as head coach to focus on their children's activities and their children's involvement with the Sunrise Athletics Club sports. However, Lance continues to give back to the sport he enjoyed in his youth, by volunteering his time a couple days a week during the season. After all, one can not completely shy away from a sport that had become an influence in one's life.
